Just got this exact watch today and I’m wearing it as I type this. Couldn’t be happier! Chose it from a long”short list” including Rolex, IWC, Omega and Hublot. I may get around to those others someday but the SBGA211 is the one I wanted the most. Great review!

Rammoshe No, GS is much better, the technology of the spring drive is next level, one of the most accurate automatic (hybrid) watches that glides with no beat, these watches are hand finished, polished and assemble. Omega’s and Rolex’s are mass produced by automated machines and mostly assembled by robotics. They both make great watches but when watches are made by hand, it’s truly beautiful because the time, skills, dedication and soul that was put into making the watch is way better then a watch thats mass produced by machines.

Thanks for this presentation! Love your Japanese 😊 The SBGA211 is an awesome watch and as an mechanical watch fan I absolutely adore the Spring Drive technology. I will buy one next month 😍 This will be my 2nd Grand Seiko. Keep up the great work! Best regards from Germany

The Snowflake is iconic, but that chocolate guilloche dial looks positively yummy. I'd be hard-pressed to chose between the two. I'd still probably pick the snowflake though.

What a beautiful watch, very well reviewed. I got recently a SARB 035 and am thinking about to get a GS. I like a lot the high beat but as well I tend to the SBRG251. Its on the smaller side but due to its case and thickness it should wear great. You did an amazing review there, congrats to this great purchase and thanks for the great presentation, I enjoyed it a lot. Cheers from Germany, Konstantin

Hi Uptick, I have only just seen this one, several years since you made it! I think you spoke a little slower then -but maybe it was just the awe you felt with this watch? I don’t think you still have the Snowflake? I seem to remember you referencing it when you had a look at the white birch last year. I have been looking longingly at the Snowflake for a while along with the Mt Iwate (steel) GMT. Why did you sell (if you did?) Would you recommend? Thanks as always.🍻

Hi Mick. I think you can’t go wrong trying the Snowflake. It’s famous for a reason and no matter how many permutations came afterwards it remains a special endearing mesmerising watch. I sometimes long for it. The case is a bit oddly shaped, like a banana and you might find yourself right where you’d need a half-link to get the right fit. Overall though it remains the icon, despite all the limited editions that came afterwards. I’d get a mint on for a big discount to retail.

@@UptickWatchReviews Thanks for the detailed reply Uptick, really appreciate it. Ok it goes joint top of the list, with the Speedy. Looked at a pristine ‘old’ Speedy recently (2019!) but also interested in the new hesalite version.👍

Nice review - thanks. It's too bad Seiko doesn't use screws in the links. It's hard to consider it a luxury watch without them. It's not due to the titanium - the Tudor Pelagos is titanium and it uses screws. That's about the only thing I can complain about with this watch.

I heard from someone knowledgeable that the pins instead of screws in the titanium bracelet allows it to move around better
@SirMopy

Also wrong. Tudur uses grade 2 titanium on the pelagos. GS is using grade 5. There is a big difference

Look ill magnetically control the balance wheel of your mechanical watch with a magnet attached to a quarts watch, that is what a spring drive is.

Great video with full of joy and information! I chose a Spring Drive GMT, but I have to admit that the finishing of this SBGA211 Snowflake is far better than my SBGE013 (now SBGE213). FYI all Spring Drive including the Snowflake and quartz models of GS are designed and manufactured in EPSON Shinshu Studio in Nagano Prefecture, as opposed to Iwate’s Shizuku-Ishi Studio where all “pure mechanical” GS are manufactured. Seiko explains that the shape of the plates of 9R65 Spring Drive movement are homage to the mountains in Shinshu area (see 0:25 to 0:27 of the GS official video below). Very good review in any ways! kzbin.info/www/bejne/r3OoaHaHYt5_b6c

Dear Sir, congratulations on your new acquisition. If you were to switch the bracelet for a crocodile leather strap, what would be its appropriate width? Do you know if Grand Seiko provides an OEM leather strap and buckle for this Snowflake? How about a deployant buckle?
@hanhs850
@hanhs850 4 жыл бұрын
Its a 20mm lug width. I think GS only have specific models in bracelet and in leather. Its one or the other.

Grand Seiko are very impressive and I'd love to bye one. BUT... Why don't they propose a Snowflake with luminova AND a smaller Diver (40mm) ? If, like me, that's what you're looking for, you have to turn to Rolex or Tudor or other brand that offer this option etc...

And honestly a cardboard box is unworthy of those luxury watches. Do you drink Champagne in a plastic cup ? Grand Seiko worth a treasure chest that allow dreams to arise before opening the box. It's an unforgivable marketing bad taste.

lol you sound just like me, a fucking watch snob. I agree mate, they should have a quality fucking box, with s shot of sake, or other fine japanese cultural items, of the highest craftsmanship. russell timmerman Who said I don’t own hi-beat watches and can’t enjoy them all the same? Many traditional Swiss watchmakers dreamt of achieving something like Spring Drive.
@blackcatsarenopussies

Spring is not quartz. There is a quartz inside, true but that is charged by the mechanical movement. The mechanical part checks itself against the quartz crystal and apply a sort of mechanical brake to slow it down or speed it up as required. The complexity of the system is mind boggling as it is, more so considering to put that inside a watch. There is no one else able to build this. It is a fully mechanical watch which corrects itself mechanically. It is like you have a standard automatic that you check and correct daily against a quartz or some internet clock or GPS etc. There is no battery, no solar, no capacitors etc.

The only thing the quartz does is act as an escapement for the mechanical watch. It's okay if you don’t understand.
