Grand Seiko Tentagraph | ROLEX DAYTONA ALTERNATIVE?

A very nice general review!!!! I liked it, specially those views of that movement at work!!!! I owned a Cosmograph Daytona from the 1960s, and got also a Zenith El Primero and a Movado Datron, and any Zenith movement was and is superior to the Rolex, even the 4130 movement. Rolex dropped/detuned the 36000vph of the Zenith to 28800vph, the rest be basically the same. And this Grand Seiko (GS) is a Technological Tour-de-Force compared to the run of the mill 4130. Lets see how their technical aspects compare: GS = 36000 vph, Rolex 28800 vph, 20% slower than GS GS- reads to 1/10th of a second, Rolex reads to 1/8th of a second, 20% less precise than GS GS- -3/+5 seconds a day rate, Rolex- +/- 2-3 seconds a day rate, Rolex has a slight advantage here, but both have Chronometer Grade Rates GS- Regulation using 4 screws in balance wheel, Rolex- Same GS- Full Balance Wheel Bridge with Height adjustments, Rolex- Same GS- Single attachment point for hairspring attachment, Rolex- same GS- 8 pillar Column Wheel, Rolex - 6 pillar column wheel, GS has a smother Start/Stop and Return-to-Zero Action GS- Vertical Clutch , Rolex- Vertical Clutch, equally efficient with no Chrono-Seconds hand jumping GS- Double Impulse, low friction thus low oiling escapement, Rolex- Swiss lever high friction thus regular oiling escapement, the GS has a more advanced escapement than Rolex with longer Maintenance Intervals than Rolex, and lower maintenance costs. GS- Isochronism at 36000vph and 72 hours Rolex- Isochronism at 28800vph for 72 hours GS- Breguet Coil, Rolex- Breguet Coil, - equally efficient GS- Single Piece Return to zero hammer, Rolex- 3 part hammer, GS is faster, stronger and more reliable GS- Date capability, Rolex- Date capability eliminated by Rolex. IMHHO, I prefer a chrono WITH A DATE, so you decide if this is a factor for you. And in this GS, I would have liked it at 6", not between 4 and 5, for symmetrical reasons. GS- 47 Jewels, Rolex- 44 Jewels. The efficiency of jewels depends on where they are located, and in this regard, both are equally well distributed and efficient. GS- High Performance Movement, Rolex- High Performance too, but less precise due to the slower rate of 28800 vs GS's 36000. GS- Excellent, highly legible dial with excellent construction and finish, Rolex- about the same GS- 100 m WR without screwing the Push buttons, Rolex, all push buttons are screwed to maintain WR GS- Hand made/finishing and assembled movement, Rolex- mostly Machine turned parts and partially hand assembled, limited hand finishing GS- Superior Finishing and Craftsmanship rivaling PP, ALand S, AP, VC, Breguet, Rolex- excellent craftsmanship but below those brands. That superior finish also includes the underside of parts not exposed to the view, Rolex- finishing is limited to bridges and exposed parts. GS- Case Finish Use Zaratsu Polishing in a HARDENED TITANIUM CASE, Rolex use mostly 904L steel, gold, and ocasionally, Platinum, and not as well finished as the GS. IMHHO as an Advanced Amateur Watchmaker and an Omega Moonwatch Fanboy I would not say that the GS is a Serious Contender to the Rolex, no, I will say IT IS THE ABSOLUTE KING of this level of Chrono watches, way above the Rolex, PERIOD!!!!! What happens is that Rolex has a Fantastic Marketing Department second TO NONE, with an outstanding QA/QC Department, while GS lacks marketing, but QA/QC are about the same. So the GS for 13000 USD compared to the 18k plus for the Rolex, i go all the way for the Superior GS at a Lower Price, but if the buyer has "Snobbish" tendencies and goes for the brand, then their watch would be the Daytona, and good luck and patience waiting for it. I will be getting my GS next month, after selling my Daytona three months ago!!!!!!!

Great watch. Hope they will add other bezel colors. The black is too much for me. I rather have one with the same color as the bracelet.
