It's a little unnerving to me that there are quite a few women I know that do get on like Aunt Sarah, and not one of them is stupid or unintelligent. The Belfast idiom is, "She's awful easygoing!"

@@MsTinkerbelle87 The thing about these Aunt Sarah types is that they can buy and sell you 6 times before breakfast and you'll think that you're the lucky one even though you end up sucking your thumb. Therein lies the comedy of the plucky underdog, Ciarán buying an engagement ring and being blindsided with Tommy Tiernan's character Uncle Gerry having to 'explain' the situation whilst Aunt Sarah carries on regardless. Never underestimate an 'easy-going' woman. "Smarter than the average bear!" Think of Holly Golightly in 'My Fair Lady'.

The fact that there was no character development between these two characters was one of the reasons that killed this show for me. Felt like Goldbergs. Even sitcoms like Step by Step or The Two and a Half Men showed better character developement and relationships work.
@anthonymuldoon579310 ай бұрын
There was character development. Grandpa Joe's hand on Gerry's shoulder when news of the Omagh bombing was breaking on the TV news spoke volumes in its silent empathy. Gerry is family to Joe; even though they are sometimes sniping at each other. Two men of different generations in a very small two-up two-down terraced house (with women too) - a recipe for something. The show was filmed in West Belfast for some of the scenes. It's where I grew up in the 1980s and 1990s and it resonates exactly with me as to how it was.

"Grandpa Joe's hand on Gerry's shoulder when news of the Omagh bombing was breaking on the TV news spoke volumes in its silent empathy." Yeah... that's what I am talking about. Tt absolutely did not matter for the rest of the series. I don't know how these random facts about the show justify lazy inconsequential writing.

Gerry didn’t tell Mary about seeing them at the concert, that’s huge. Grandda didn’t change lol

@@MsTinkerbelle87 It's subtle and cumulative with Granda Joe. He'd seen it all. He probably had the best lines in the final episode when advising Erin about the Good Friday Agreement referendum. "What if this is some ghost story you tell your children!" Aye, and what then?
