Saw the Broadway show on tour in San Francisco at a 3,500 seat theatre..liked it a lot. Then, years later, saw a professional revival at a small 99 seat theatre in L.A. and absolutely fell in love. You need the intimacy of a smaller theater to bring the stories to life, to identify with the characters. I have always been a great fan of professional dancers; they work and train so hard and are so crucial to a show's success, but so few rise to stardom.

After the show, I can remember a bunch of us from school in Richmond, sitting on the floor watching our friend open and read to us, all the Opening Night telegrams. I was really impressed that I had a friend in a sensational musical hit on Broadway. For the original cast this move to Broadway was the culmination of two years of their lives birthing this idea of Michael Bennett into a show at the downtown Public Theatre, run by Joe Papp, who gave them all the rehearsal space and time they needed to "put(ting) it together." What none of us expected was the dour sarcasm from our "star," exhausted after spending so much time with all these people we thought were so wondetful. Two years of your life locked in a rehearsal studio with the same people, working on one project. Even the choreography got a Bronx cheer for being so easy. Wow....that evening was a mixed-bag. But, at least Broadway now had a new show that was "fresh" and "exciting."

I saw it on stage 33 times, at least a half dozen with the original cast. This movie version is an insult to the stage production. The orchestral arrangements in the film are weak in comparison. And the plot adjustments to allow for a romance just derail the intent of the script. Even the poor quality videos on line of the stage production put this glossy film adaptation to shame.

When I was a teenager, I danced in an ensemble production modeled after the Rockettes, so I know first hand how hard it is to get the entire ensemble to be totally synced in terms of kicks, steps, arms, ALL movements. It takes hours and hours and hours of practice and a bizzilion "do-overs" when just one person effs it up. It's really, really hard work and the truth is, the dance skills aren't as important as your ability to move perfectly in sync with your co-dancers...

I wondered that too. First u see the 8 he selected(4 guys,4 girls) ,then you see sheila and the others who were cut,along with the Puerto Rican guy who injured his knee. I figured the closing dance scene was seperate from the actual movie,it was just the entire cast performing(even dancers from the start of movie who were being cut) to the signature number
@Shinybuddies
@Shinybuddies 6 жыл бұрын
@@nickatnite16 It's done to make a point about how hard the life of a professional performer really is. Anyone at that audition could have done what was needed for that show. But there are always more performers than parts for them to play, so they have to go through the humiliation of a long audition. Even though they know, and the director knows, that it's all arbitrary - he could take any of them, and the show will be just as good. That's why we see this army of dancers at the end of the movie - it's impossible to tell who are the better dancers, it's barely possible to tell them apart from each other. Their individuality becomes submerged in the crowd. That why I don't like this number - it's brilliantly performed, of course, but to me it's not beautiful - it's tragic.

Love the movie. Great video. Each time I watch the video, for some reason I'm captivated by the two errors found at 3:27 and 3:44 where the same person (the Jewish guy, about sixth person from the left in the front row) makes a mistake. You have to wonder if this was done on purpose. In the storyline, the 9th dancer is accepted because she had slept with the choreographer in the past. He created an extra spot just for her, even though she made more mistakes than anyone who had been rejected in the opening. Why is this never questioned. I like this story because in so many ways, it reflects real life no matter what career you enter.

I know this is an old post, but I wanted to reply. I always felt that she wasn't making mistakes. She was desperate to return to work that she was willing to just be in the chorus line instead of the star that she had been and was a natural at. He was upset that he had to force her to tone down her natural talent because she was standing out by being too good. It was sad, pathetic, hard to watch, emotional.

Cassie's story is also based on Donna McKechnie's real life, or two halves of it anyway.

I always thought that this play would stay on Broadway forever to introduce new dancers. I 've seen it several times and it was always a little different because of the constant cast change. Loved the fabulous eye trick with the mirrors when to are sitting horizontally in front of the stage.

I just cried watching this. Holy fuck, I miss live theatre so so much. It's been a year since I was casted in Follies. We're still waiting to be able to start rehearsing.
