Tim Is Off To The Moon

Tim goes lunar, with a range of moon-themed toys!
A clock that also shows the phases of the moon.
A balloon that becomes a crescent moon. Tim saw this originally at a toy fair, filled with helium. So it floated in the air!
An earth-moon toy, which are connected with an elastic band. Wind it up, and the moon whizzes around the earth.
A miniature automaton, showing the cow jumping over the moon, based on the nursery rhyme -
Hey diddle, diddle!
The cat and the fiddle,
The cow jumped over the moon;
Then a spinning top made from a paper clip, which has a tiny magnet attached to it, and when it spins, it interacts with a small metal moon.
Then a tumbling block toy, which shows the phases of the moon. In addition, the images are luminous, so you get a good effect in the dark.
Then a joke item - a piece of moon rock that is trying to return to the moon! It floats above the base, and is held down by little chains.
Finally, an example of DUAL ART. From one direction, it shows a wolf howling at something... turn it by 90 degrees, and you see what the wolf is howling at - the moon!

I have that clock! It belonged to my late grandfather, no idea where he got it but he worked at NASA and loved space so it made sense. It's a little fast but that's why the reset button is so useful!

I always liked those clocks. They're a nice and more realistically modeled (though rather plastic-y) take on the ancient horological moon phase complication -- found on many other timepieces, but usually in simple "bi-lobed" 2D display. For anyone interested, the clocks are known as the "Galilea" lunar model and can sometimes be found NOS on ebay as I'm fairly sure they're no longer in production.

The same seas, craters and other features are visible to all who can see the Moon at that moment. Only a few dozen people have ever seen the Moon from a significantly different angle. The rest of have always seen the same face, with only slight variation, due mostly to a process called libration. Naturally, we all see the same phase at the same time. So, if a three-quarter Moon is visible from, say, Greece at a given moment, then that same three-quarter Moon is simultaneously visible from South Africa. Although it will look very different from the two locations, the only real difference will be the orientation. The shadow moves around the Moon's surface in a very specific way throughout its cycle, with only slight variations. The exception is during a lunar eclipse, when the Earth casts its own shadow on the face of the full Moon.

The eartb wobbling around its center of gravity actually does happen as the moon orbits us. The moon is massive enough to offset the center of gravity 2/3rds of the radius of the earth, causing it to slightly circle in space with the moon.
