Dude was out there draining water from ppl via touch, controlling vast areas of sand, and if I remember turning buildings to sand. Just the draining of water felt to me was a much larger scope than “I turn into sand”

It baffles me that gear fifth isn’t super popular. It’s not only my favorite luffy form, but easily my favorite shounen form of all time! Shounen forms always see the protagonist getting more serious, and raw! But gear fifth really feels like we’re seeing pre time skip luffy but with the power to execute his insane ideas! Its cartoony, it’s iconic, it’s funny AND epic at the same time. And do I think he can go even higher? I’ve seen some speculation that he can power up in the sun 🌞 and I’d love to see what direction that takes if it turns out to be true!

I've had this idea for a while but what if Luffy uses his awakening to inadvertently turn the whole red line into a giant rubber band, and using it as an attack similar to how kids will use a rubber band on their hands to prank others. it would be a fun Luffy-style attack that also had huge consequences on the world.

My theory is that Nika had a choice once Luffy died. It could have gone back into the world as a fruit or awaken and revive Luffy. The journey that Luffy went on to that point convinced it to awaken.

Gear 5th has been my favorite transformation not only in OP, but Shounen Manga in general. The fact that he's had a vast imagination ever since the beginning of the series, and now his powers has awakened to where he can *LITERALLY* bring his imagination to life at simple thoughts. I guess the way I saw it was that since Luffy's fruit is a hito hito no mi, he didn't get new transformations but rather merges with them. Basically, he has only one form and that's his hybrid form, which he is permanently in.

That's like debating whether Lucci's awakened form is his hybrid form. Zoan awakenings grant a new, stronger, separate 4th form. That's what G5 is. Luffy doesn't have a full beast or hybrid form. He's a human who ate the human-human fruit model Nika, so more human-ness would've just been redundant. It isn't like the human-human fruit model Buddha or Onyudo where they both look significantly different than normal humans. Well, maybe. We don't know what Nika actually looked like.

I want to add one detail hinting about awakening in the doflamingo fight: when luffy used the culverin, dofla mentioned it looked like there was no limit to his stretching. The thing looked kind of suspect to me at the time, like he was actually hinting that the move was a step toward awakening, and it sits rather fine with the theory in this video, especially considering that culverin is a very prominent move in the "next step" (snakeman). Also, if you say this is a stretch, you're also forced to say that the pun is totally intended.

I think a future awakening could involve him gaining some Logia-like ability. Considering his fruit was considered a Paramecia all this time to instead be a Zoan yet still has kept the rubber Paramecia aspect now. This means his fruit might be more than just a Zoan fruit. And also remember his Red Hawk. Logic has been its just air friction igniting his hand. But considering he does it UNDERWATER against Hody Jones leads to the thought that maybe his imagination led him to borrow a Logia ability, which might be a hint to him awakening further to gain Logia abilities to complement his imagination.

I do think there is a solid line between awakened and non awakened fruit powers. For Zoans it's when your mind and body catch up with the will of the fruit, if your will is strong enough to persist you awaken and keep your mind, but if the fruit's will is stronger you awaken but lose your mind. It's a clear improvement to the physical strength of the zoan transformations. It's also an awakening of the Paramecia/Logia abilities some mythical Zoans have. Paramecia fruits awaken when their powers begin to affect things other than themselves. We see this with Doffy and Katakuri transforming the environment into strings/mochi and with law and kidd they apply their magnetic poles/rooms to objects. If we include Luffy, who has paramecia powers due to being a mythical Zoan, he can turn the environment into rubber. We don't know how logias work but it would probably be similar to paramecias. The point is, there are no partial awakenings. You can get close to it, and continue to grow after it, but the actual line of being awakened is a hard, well defined line.

If gear 5th is either his full Nika or half Nika half human form, then isn’t there another transformation? I think we've still yet to see the true power of Sun God Nika. We've only seen his "Full Moon" awakening. He currently has the same colouration as the Sulong form of the Minks. I think he'll truly awaken while the sun is at its peak and he has something like a golden form. Truly harnessing the power of the sun.

I think you're right that "awakening" doesn't mean there's the next step and then you hit the sealing. Apart from the imagination, I would add that it is also based on how they understand their abilities. I'm not sure if anyone here has read manga/manhwa(?) called "Release That Witch". It's not an all time great story, but in there a witch's ability was never limited to one "awakening", since based on their understanding of their own ability was theoretically limitless, it could manifest and grow in many different ways,. I feel that DF would function in the same capacity.

I really think you’re on to something here. Devil fruits are a strange system, especially if it just goes not awakened to awakened. I have a little theory. Devil fruits when first made the creator/ person who wished and the fruit both had a will of their own. They both compromised and that’s base fruit. Then both the fruit’s will and that of the user works together to grow or something similar, in addition to this the previous user’s will is inherited by the next in a way. Once the both the user and the fruit start influencing the will of the power it changes and awakens slowly. A good example would be Magellan and Katakuri both very similar fruits but one is more awakened than the other. Magellan has started his awakening with his different poison attacks and using shape change with the attacks, but Katakuri has gone further beyond. Katakuri can also use shape change and such with his attacks but also with himself, that’s another level of Awakening, even further than Del Flamingo’s Awakening of just affecting his environment. Katakuri pushed his Devil fruit so far that he’s nearly a Logia type. It also makes sense why some Paramecias and Zoans are adjacent to others and even the swamp Logia that nearly works like Paramecia with its pocket dimension. Previous or current users have influenced the fruits growth and evolution and that is passed down to the next user as part of the fruit’s will. It’s very possible that Gear 2&3 were previous user’s ideas, that’s why Luffy learned them so fast, but Gear 4 was his own creation and it took him 2 years to get really good at it. Gear 5 is a combination of Luffy’s will merging with the fruit’s will as well as previous users. Also explains why Sabo knows some of Ace’s moves even though he never saw them.

I think Luffys next step is gaining control over the gear 5th transformation. It was stated that zoan users can lose their minds and the will of the fruit taker over during awakening resulting in the impel down jailer beasts. I can’t recall if it was animal based zoans exclusively but I feel Luffys gear 5th’s uncontrolled laughter and unpredictable attacks are based on his fruit causing him to lose his own mind. It seems like at least with some fruits, that when how you perceive the ability is the limit in conjunction with the will and desire you have to use it how ever you conceptualize it. Kid fruit only worked on metals and junk, until he wanted to use it differently. It still follows the mechanic and field of the fruit but when u think about it differently you can make other items magnets and not just pull and push things.

I literally just reread all of one piece in fiveish months. Oda has most definitely been drip feeding is these hints. You can see Luffys unconscious (as in he doesn’t know he’s using it not like he’s asleep) use and development of his haki all the way back in syrup village and possibly earlier. Plus you have nika form foreshadowing all over the place with Luffy laugh at buggy’s attempt to execute him in rouge town and the party in Skypiea. I’d love to see you do a deep dive video on this.

What if the model Nika can awaken 3 times with paramecia, zoan and logia properties. 11:13 I think it’s possible luffy’s next awakening could be logia powers. Gear 4 does have the steam shroud which seems to be indicative of awakening. So what if gear 4 was Luffy awakening the zoan properties of his fruit? He obtains a super enhanced physical form. Next, he unlocks gear 5 and awakens the paramecia properties of his fruit. He can now freely and effortless manipulate all the “rubber” properties he has and affects his surroundings and even opponents. Gear 6 could be “overdrive” or something where he super heats himself, becoming a resin or something like that and gaining logia powers.

First in Orange Town when he inflated to rebound Buggy’s buggy ball and then at the beginning of the Baratie arc when Luffy ballooned to deflect FullBody’s (such an awesome name) cannon ball that crashed thru Baratie into Zeff in his sleeping quarters.

I like the theory that the gears Luffy use are like the gears of a car. I don't think there is going to be a next step. He made it clear when he got Gear 5 that it was the peak of his abilities. I think his next (and probably last) power up will be Haki related. In the last arcs, he learned how to use Armament and Observation Haki to their fullest, I whink the next big step will be using his CoC Haki to the fullest. I predict it's either going to be drawing strength from or to his allies.

Along with the fact that he already has advanced his CoC haki by infusing it into his attacks, he is a shonen protagonist. I suspect there is more he will learn to do with his haki, but there is no way he would peak right before the final boss of the series gets introduced. There HAS to be something more that will allow him to liberate the whole world from the world government. Honestly though maybe his next adancements won't be with his devil fruit or his haki, but with his name. Something unique ability to those with D in their name and then maybe some way of combining that with all his other abilities.

My initial headcanon when Gear 5/Nika-Nokia-no-Mi dropped had to deal with Imagination, similar to Uta's ability in the movie. So far we've seen Luffy look at someone's ability and try to mimic/imitate them, and make them better: CP9's Soru/Geppo > Luffy gear 2, hyper speed to the point of teleportation, seen even hovering above people, Enel/Eneru's (and later seen with Sengoku & Oden's poses) pose during Gear 4/Bound-man, (Not 100% since its been a bit since i've seen it, but i after luffy getting hypnotized by Jango, he went a step *above* temporarily and unlocked Gattling). What I'm getting at is that Luffy's power isnt Rubber: Its Imagination. Since some of his abilities have been recreations of others, Luffy has been "studying" (if you can even call him doing anything studying) others and perfecting them. The reason why it's been so focused around "rubber" abilities for its entire history has been because of his imagination, starting with Shanks when Luffy first ate the fruit. Shanks quickly jumped and told him it was the gum fruit, and quickly after luffy stretched and fell to the floor. Shanks knew that if the WG or anyone caught wind of a kid who could use his imagination to conjure up some magic, possibly world-ending abilities, they would actively seek and destroy it. Im honestly glad to see that someone (or some other people) have come to a similar conclusion, and I have not outed myself as a complete and utter quack.

I’d like to add something that doesn’t detract from this, but rather supports this. The first time we saw a culmination of gears was in Thriller Bark, where Luffy needed to be fast enough AND hit hard enough to take out Oars(and eventually Moria). It’s easy to miss, but this is the first time EVER we see a combination of Gear 2nd and Gear 3rd for a finishing attack. (Which, when you think about it, is the basis for Gear 5. An ability that uses speed AND power-allowing him to access both in one Gear.) So that could also be attributed toward the step taken for awakening. But that’s just my opinion on that 🤷‍♂️. In terms of more gears, Gear 5 is supposed to be the “Ultimate Freedom”, so I think he’s hit the ceiling in that aspect. However, I do think he’ll find ways to adapt with it and do more with the power.

Honestly just to make a interesting point a fully awakened magnet magnet fruit would be akin to atomic control if fully mastered, similar to what magneto can do in marvel, that would be a pretty massive awakening of the fruit but using the peak abilities of masters, there is one thing that luffy can do to essentially fully awaken his devil fruit by your logic and it could go the path of the mask from the mask, or maybe the path towards the breaking of the fourth wall like so many characters in comic books

I noticed in Dressrosa when Luffy flashed back to training with Rayleigh that he had hit a bit of a wall but Rayleigh pushes him to try something new. It fits that after helping him train his body, Rayleigh was also making sure he retained that imaginative and improvisational streak to match it.

I think to awaken, specifically for Luffy and his fruit, requires his heartbeat to beat as the "Drums of Liberation", I think dying (heart stopping) gave his fruit to a chance to get that particular heartbeat rhythm going and into his awakened form. Now luffy for awakening would have to get his heart into the rhythm consciously.

I actually view it slightly differently, though at it's base I do agree with the step theory. The way I see it awakening is basically like unlocking the basement, so getting access to the -1 floor. Awakening and Fruit power progression the way I see it aren't linked or even progressive, but rather 2 seperate directions, with the very simple reasoning, that Kid for example still will experience more fruit power progression, even after awakening, though awakening unlocked something at the base of the fruit that just exists now. So to surmize what I mean, is that awakening expands on the base of the fruit, increasing it's potential for evolution / adding new evolutionary rules & boundaries, though this is sperate form the users power growth and their step by step progression of their own powers utilizing said base and expanding on it.

I think he didn't really awaken he more so took a step in mastering his true devil fruit (the Nika fruit and not the gomu fruit) because as it is explained by Doflamingo, awakening is being able to effect your surroundings with your powers, which he only could when he unlocked gear 5.

I agree with the takes in this video. I love, however, that all of Luffy's additional forms are never invalidating of the former. BoundMan isn't rendered ineffective because of SnakeMan. Luffy's growth with Conqueror's Haki as well, has strengthened his base form to the point that he could likely hit as powerfully overall as BoundMan or SnakeMan. That being said, Gear Fifth, Luffy's new powers are kinda in their 'raw material' phase. He's played with them, and even used them like the other forms. Rapid stretching, and the obvious King-Kong-gun-dwarfing Bajhrang Gun... (I wanna see a Bajhrang Gatling now). Luffy's growth never ceases to embolden with every new strength or skill or ability he discovers, and I'm eager to see the raw materials of Gear Fifth molded into Luffy's eventual final form.

A key component of "awakening" for paramecia fruits is the added ability to affect your surroundings with your fruit's powers, which only occurred at Gear 5. For Zoan awakenings, I think you're somewhat correct. Each new "form" is a kind of awakening for Zoan users, including all hybrid forms. Some are easy, some require intense training to maintain control, like Chopper's Monster Point, and Gear 5, but the "true" awakening brings out the full potential of the fruit. For Kaido, it was his final form, Kaen Diako.

I want to introduce a new theory. The Nen Theory. This theory goes as follows. Long long ago the world had a much more robust power system. This system was still called Haki, but it had a complexity resembling Nen. At the highest level this system grants the user an unique super power. Once perfected, these powers would be on par with a devil fruit awakening. The users of these powers were extremely rare and highly sought after. Eventually a process was developed to separate a power from its user and place it into a transitional vessel that could then be consumed to transfer the power to a recipient user. For this purpose fruits were chosen. An additional benefit to the process was that once the recipient user died the power would then transfer itself into a new transitional vessel. This allowed nations to stockpile these powers as weapons and reuse them as they saw fit. However there was a side-effect, along with a power the recipient users would be imposed with a weakness to the sea. Thus devil fruits were born. The true scale of Haki is part of the hidden history of the world. The government doesn't want the populous to know that anyone could have the potential to unlock powers on par with a devil fruit. However, some rare people still naturally develop their own Nen like abilities. People like Miss Goldenweek and King Elizabello. If I'm right, then the following prediction will come true: the Gorosei will each have a power on scale with a devil fruit awakening, but they will not have a weakness to the sea.
