Neither of us are young anymore but want to do some traveling. He is 75 and I just turned 69 so since us never know how long we have we want to get this done so we can both go. And which ever is gone first the other will be able to travel. Praying that is a long ways off. Love seeing what others do in a very small space. We have around 7.5’ by 11’ and thankfully can both stand in it. I wish you all the best and can’t wait to get back out on the road.

Her setup is very nice. The only problem I could see is if it was a rainy or a very windy day you know she would end up having to cook inside and that might create a little problem in that small of a space.
@dmwark2 жыл бұрын
Hi David, this is Darlene. I can cook inside the 4Runner by placing the wooden box (the one that’s shown outside under my table) on the floor inside the tailgate. I put my butane stove on top of it and sit on my “chair” to cook. I tend to keep my diet very simple when camping and don’t do any major cooking, but I often make my coffee inside on chilly mornings using this method. Of course I crack a window anytime I light my stove inside. I also keep a can of fire-stop spray under my wheel well cover.

I love her aesthetic same as mine in fact I have the same bamboo table, white box under table and potty basket that I used in quartzsite last year! I love the texture and color of her window covers very curious what material she used and if it is covering reflectix or stands on it's own. Let me know if you remember...I just bought a brand new class B Thor Sequence. Is it crazy that I'm still watching these simple builds and debating selling or keeping my no build Honda Odyssey Minivan for certain trips. I just love how cozy small spaces are and trying to get used to how big my new rig is along with the big price tag to be honest. Only reason I made the leap is I'll be spending months at a time traveling and needed to work from the road. Otherwise I would be completely content with the smaller space. Plus something in my heart tells me I should pass my beloved van to someone who will use her for their new adventure...hope to see you down the road ;)

@@dmwark I am back and forth on whether or not to purchase the full set of reflectix from Weathertech ($250.00 here in Canada) or make my own which would likely be about $75.00. What do you think?
@dmwark2 жыл бұрын
@@lifewithpugwinkle I can’t advise you which to choose, but I will share my personal experience. The window covers have definitely been the most frustrating challenge of my admittedly simple “build”. I’m still not satisfied, and will eventually come up with a better solution. I do not have the weathertech window covers, but I do have custom floor mats and window rain guards from that company which I am extremely satisfied with. They are good quality and fit perfectly, so I expect the window covers would as well. Had I been willing to accept the silver/black option, I would’ve happily purchased them and saved myself the headache. I believe the price is significantly lower in the US, but when the purchase of wallpaper and contact paper is accounted for, I didn’t save money by making them myself. I was attempting a more aesthetically pleasing version. Even though I’m not entirely satisfied with them, based on the comments, I was somewhat successful. I hope this helps. Good luck.

I like how she organized what she has brought with her & how she uses the space. However, I kept waiting for the basic beginning steps to be explained bc that’s what I’m stuck on. For example, how does she keep her window coverings in?. What is the L bracket that holds the back end of the rod screwed into? How does she hang her curtain rod behind her front seats? I see that the window coverings are light on the inside. Are they dark on the outside? At times they appear to be floating & not jammed into the window so how do they stay up? I really like her use of the rod for hanging things with S hooks. I’m in a van & have a lot of totes that I could use for storage hung like that so are the L brackets screwed into the headliner? I don’t see how that holds any weight. They are the very first things to be done. Everything you showed comes after those basic things are done. I haven’t been able to get past the basics yet. Cheers, Mo in NJ

I will be happy to ask Darlene to answer your more in-depth questions.
@dmwark2 жыл бұрын
Hi Monna, this is Darlene. I’m going to try to answer your questions, but first, let me say that, “figuring it out’ is part of the fun. I encourage you to use your creativity and problem solving skills 🤔 Be prepared to fail 😫Sometimes it takes a few tries, but eventually you’ll find a solution 🤓 1) My curtain is hung from a 6’ bungee cord attached to my roof rack, and run through the front door openings. You can catch a glimpse of it at 12:40. It works great, and is easily removed. 2) The hanging rod is primarily supported by the two handles over the passenger side doors with heavy duty zip ties. The L bracket at the end is just tucked behind the molding for minor support. (I didn’t screw anything into my vehicle anywhere.) I don’t hang anything heavy at that end. Heavier items are hung near the handles, which are designed to support a person pulling themselves into the vehicle. 3) Window coverings are a challenge for sure! Mine are just reflectix, cut to shape and covered with peel & stick wallpaper on the inside, and matte black contact paper on the outside. Some are held in place by tension, some with adhesive Velcro. I’m working on a better solution, because the adhesive softens in hot, direct sun, and they sometimes fall down. Good luck with your project, and enjoy the process.

@@dmwark thank you!! So many very clever uses of magnetic hooks, s hooks, l hooks, and tasteful reimagined use of bread box, baskets, pillow cases, hanging shelf. What are the power sources you mentioned (small one in back and one in front)? Is your potty just a 2 gal bucket with gamma lid and do you have a "cover" over it in the basket?
@dmwark2 жыл бұрын
@@infantrymama I have a Bluetti eb70, which is 716 watt hours, and a 200 watt hour Aeiusny. I also have a 100 watt Rockpals portable solar panel. Inside my 2 gallon potty bucket, I store a wide mouth screw top “pee jar” because I separate liquids from solids. For the most part, I try to take care of #2 when I I have access to a public restroom, but when that isn’t convenient, I have small compostable bags which fit perfectly in the bucket for solid waste. I also carry pine sawdust that I add to the bag (probably unnecessary, but it’s what I do). I tie up the small bag immediately after use and put it into a ziplock (which is inside the bucket) until I can dispose of it. I also store a pack of “wet wipes” inside the bucket. On top of the gamma lid is just a braided placemat, cut to fit for aesthetics. It’s also a perfect spot to keep my usb powered fan. When I’m in drive mode, I take the bucket out of the basket, and use the basket to store small loose objects that I don’t want flying around inside the vehicle.

@dmwark2 жыл бұрын
Hi Beverly, this is Darlene. I built a flat surface over each wheel well by attaching two boards at a right angle using L-brackets. They are just resting on the wheel well, and held in place with bungee cords secured to attachment points that are part of the vehicle and cup hooks screwed into the underside of the shelf. I used pre-cut, pre-finished shelves from Home Depot. I was lucky that they happened to be the perfect size. Not only do they provide a flat surface, but I have a little bit of storage space underneath. I keep a fire extinguisher and extra cans of butane under one, and as shown in the video, there is a small power station under the other.

How are her window coverings made and attach to her windows?
@TravelGrandma2 жыл бұрын
They are made of reflectix and covered with peel and stick wallpaper. The reflectix fit into the edges of the window which helps to keep them in place

Do y’all find that the outside rug / mat is worth it ? Does it keep dirt, dust, pebbles out of your living space? Does it store well without holding dirt ? (Where do you store it?) do you walk barefoot on it - does it protect your feet ? Are there bugs especially the flying kind where you camp and do you use netting or screens around the doors while open ? Asking for a friend, wink wink !

I found a folding 4x6 mat that folds up like a tarp would. So when it's folded it stores as a small rectangle. Small enough to shake off any debris before storing. Yes it helps keep your van cleaner. amzn.to/3hRH8BB
