My oldest granddaughter wrote an essay for school about the little house with the slamming back door and big backyard, the overnight stays with popcorn and gummy bears. It was so beautiful it brings me to tears at how much she loved coming to our house. The little house is not ours any longer and is one of our biggest regrets. We had a gooodbye picnic and the kids cried. Together, we raised 2 children and 8 grandchildren in that house. They tell me they still drive by it. They are almost all adults now. We have downsized so we gave as many memories of the house to them as we could. I pray the great grandbabies will love this little house as much.

All thes photos are beautiful, anyone who could afford this was blessed beyond my imagination when I was growing up. My Christmas memories with my grandmother are the exact opposite. But they are as pure and as lovely to remember as if they had been as you show. We were poor in material things. But so rich in being loved and well cared for. Her whole house smelled of chocolate, cinnamon, cloves, apples and oranges. Gingerbread and molasses cookies were always on the sideboard. A beautiful tree hand cut from the woods, and wild holly stems and dried flowers from her garden, arranged in Ball canning jars. Candy canes and popcorn and cranberries strung together on thread as garland for the tree, and old bird nests painted for ornaments. We made a star from cardboard and aluminum foil for the topper. But the most beautiful part of our Christmases, was the joy and love we shared all year round, gathered at her table, and the reading of the birth of Christ Jesus before we closed our eyes in sleep. Christmas morning we gathered our stockings and pulled the new socks, gloves, jacks for girls and toy soldiers for boys, hard candy, nuts and fruit and peppermint sticks from the toe. Christmas isn't as sacred now as it was when I was a kid. It's all glitz and glamour and filled with worldly things.
