Peace To All, Yes, if you listen to DJ's today, they are faster, more precise, and fancier. But what some fail to understand is that all the DJ's today are using other DJ's creativity, as a measuring stick, to compare themselves, and even to get better and more creative. When G M Flash did this, he had no other person he could follow, compare himself to, or copy or practice some other DJ's fancy techniques. Pretty much, Flash was inventing as he went along. So yes, you will hear mistakes, miss a beat, needle jumping, etc.. But this was all necessary for the beginning of the evolution that is going on today. So please, before one start to diss what's happening here, remember that all this started and lead all the rich Rappers and Dj's you have today. They built the DOOR. Everyone else just walked in. G M Flash, Real Brother, Pioneer, Inventor, Creative, True Hall of Fame Legend. Flash and the Furious going through so much are the reason why there were so many open doors and opportunities in Hip Hop. Can't blame them for what's happening to Rap today, but I will Thank them for having the Guts and Vision, and all the RAW work they put to be part of the Original builders of MCing- RAP- HIP HOP,and all that YES, YES YA'LL. I was Blessed to be there, and I'm blessed today. Blessings To All.

peace to you sister Mary ~ I agree. I'm old enough to remember going out in the alleys to find a refrigerator box to try and learn backspins listening to hiphop when it first hit Chi. I appreciate being able to hear it again ~ my pause tapes from the radio have long since disintegrated ¡jaja!

Peace and Blessings to all... I was there before GMF & the F5 blew up. he used to play at Roosevelt HS in the Bronx Friday nights. He was scorching anyone who dared to challenge him. there was only one that ever came close but NEVER beat him. that was DJ Charlie Chase. very quick but not quick enough for GMF. GMF was the only one at that time that was able to do it that way. yes today's djs are quicker and more precise but they have technology. GNM and those djs of that era laid down the ground work using wax only for today's djs. Y'all young folk don't know what it was like back then. I grew up in a time that the dj was king because not too many could do it. Crews were the thing back then....you had djs, rappers, and the rest were assigned to carry all the components (stages, speakers, record creates, the wiring, amps, etc.). it was a whole production and often for nothing but the love of seeing others enjoy themselves as they dance to your music. its a whole different world today. its all about the Benjamins mostly and not the love of it. its all good though. I applaud those that are doing it. We didn't have social media or the internet. but my parties were packed just by word of mouth. GMF's gatherings were always jammed beyond capacity. Today's djs are the latest generation of djs who have taken it to the next level. but one should never forget the humble beginnings of the dj. And yes Grand Mater Flash created the crossfader...My hats off to those like Grand Master Flash, Grand Wizard Theodore, Africa Bambaataa, Jellybean Benitez, Larry Levan for influencing me to become a dj. Werd up......those who criticize the past, you don't know shit. Yall are spoiled and don't know what its really like in the craft. you just walk in with your laptop and usbs and play. hahahahaha. yall crack me up...I remember when I used to flange with 2 turntables. I used 3 or 4 turntables. now you just press a button. my point is, its a skill not just an option....again, yes. Today's djs are more talented but they have technology. we didn't have a sync button. but we made it happen cleanly and smoothly. knowing that certain songs were faster at certain points of the track and slow back down after a certain point. you don't have that today...you sync it and call it a day. I guess the good is that it gives those who ordinarily wouldn't attempt to play get in the game.....

This particular performance inspired thousands to want to become dj’s. Nothing remotely like this had been done before, the whole format and concept was just far away from the mainstream. Unbelieveable to read comments about how terrible this sounds and the pathetic 'oh I thought he was better than this'. My good god, look at the year ffs!! 1979, you kids weren't even a twinkle in your dads eyes. This legend was creating music of the future, way beyong the skill level of the average dj back then and using equipment out of the ark compared to todays all singing all dancing Serato and skipless vinyl and needles or butter smooth cross faders. A lot of new scratches today are nice granted BUT actually easier in a lot of respects than the oldskool scratches as you are able to sound far more technical than what you are actually doing as its all in the fingers rather than wrists. A bit like parradiddles on a drumkit but too much of it is tiring to the ear which a lot of dj's are guilty of. To create something equally impressive to this mix today you would need to be near the skill level of Q-bert or his successor. If anyone can post a link to a mix better than Adventures on the Wheels of Steel then I am all ears because I've yet to hear a better mix.

Dude kids these days got Taktor and Maschine and digital audio that can be manipulated at the drop of a hat. These dudes had to feel where a loop was on a delicate physical disc, and fucking up a loop was a matter of a wrist movement a centimeter too far. Today people just quickly define a loop on a screen and let that play while they do some finger drums on a sampler or cue up another loop, something that wasn't even possible back in the day. Plus he invented this shit. It's like talking shit about how messy ancient architecture was, but they were carving rocks with their hands so who's gonna talk shit you know?

sync buttons, tractor, virtual dj took away the hard parts and made it easier to learn the other parts of djing. we had to do it all....we had a thing called an echo chamber for echoing songs, 2 records to flange. today you have a button. you dot have to develop those skills. it frees you up to do the other stuff...

U can never compare flash to anyone unless they started on the streets from nothing with him. By the time he battled cheese, rules and techniques where very different. flash was the originator of on time mixing. on time fast mixing. Until people caught his style which was pioneering in works... no one was doing what he was doing. And everything he did, he was discovering as he went forward. So no one can u compare with Flash, Herc, Brucie B.
@Saintboss

Basically, DJs were not defined because of its uniqueness and all that still had to be understood on 2 turntables and a mixer. 1 person who i felt was sick on the turntables was Wizkid. Another was Dr.Rock. Flash and Charlie Chase understanding of timing was Unique within itself. Catching a record before the breakbeat and throwing it in on time matching up with the break already playing was science within itself, and they did it well. Kendu from Queens, Dj U-God from the real cipher of Sounds.

Alot of young peoples criticism for grandmaster flash is shocking and shows a lack of respect to those pioneers . Hip hop Wannabes have no clue, alot of them don't even know the difference between hip hop and rap. And many more young people of today don't even know to cook let alone dj. Many don't even what vinyl is. In order to appreciate and understand the hip hop/turntablism culture you must go back that is common sense, which isn't that common by some of the idiots nowadays who trying to argue with the older heads of hip hop who clearly know more. You try and invent something that is real has that has the longivity as djing /hip hop. My hand is currently held to my ear I don't hear nothing nope. The true hip hop headz fight the good fight, I'm with you. Respect to Afrika Bambaatta, Kool Herc, and Malcolm Mclaren who open many peoples eyes including mine to the beginning of hip hop. Not forgetting the early days of electro funk too which paved the way for many music genres to this day fact.

@@alfredoacostabeneficiaryak3239 He forgets that in 1979 this level of skill was incredible and had he been there he would have been blown away. Only a handful of people doing it in the world, the turntables and mixers appalling quality with faders that were stiff, stylus that jumped all over the place yet Flash had mastered the art form by 1979 so he must have been doing this in 1977, 1978 to get to this level. Easy to look back now and judge but there were no videos, no tutorials, no manuals, no one else to bite. His little brain wouldn't have been able to comprehend it in 1979 no matter how great he thinks he is compared to Flash, to be this level in 1979 is the equivalent of being Q-bert level today and I doubt DJPashn is on that level or will be this lifetime.

You actually think the birth of hip-hop was due to a record release? Wrooong. Freestyle rap battles in the street and at house parties were going on for years before any records were released. Flash & the Furious 5 had their own weekly at a NYC club as early as 1977.

so when it comes to whom Flash is in relationship to Basketball. He's bigger than a m Jordan. Herc is Bigger than a L James. Brucie B, Dj Hollywood, U God, Divine, Kendu, Jazzy J, Bam, Red Alert. No DJ now plays in parks and had a wild NY on their hand. And thats if u was wack... Guns and 40 O's are coming your way. U represented some of the biggest Drug dealers at parties... pure pressure (big up to GM Vick and DeWit) for a paycheck. When u take that into account ...than u really know.

@run666 trying to say red alert was better than flash!..that's a nonsense. much respect to red alert, but he wasn't even the best Dj in the zulu nation. Now Afrika Islam, Whiz Kid or Jazzy J maybe gives a flash a little battle. Chuck Chillout was nice, but Flash is a step ahead. Flex and Skribble, cant compare them to originators. thats like comparing athletes of today to athletes of the 70's,

please don't step on a skill you don't have or choose not to have...to some of us the turntable is an instrument. if you play bass on a hit record who do you think is gonna extend your career playing that trak all the time on the radio, in the club, in a wedding party or a birthday party? stop with the ignorance.

Don't get me wrong, I have a lot of respect for Flash, but it seems like this is the only mix he ever does. A little overrated.

you wouldn't understand...you had to be there..it was what everyone wanted to hear....it wasn't being done in that manner. there were only a few. no matter how it sounds like. it was a spectacle to see someone move that quick with the mixer in the middle and not the way its done today with technology. we only had wax. no wav files no mp3 none of that. you had to be there....try cuttin' by lifting the needle and drop it where you need to be....he did that....
