Grandmother Says Emotional Farewell As New Kensington Kmart Closes

A grandmother who worked at the New Kensington Kmart shared an emotional farewell as the store closed for good Sunday evening; KDKA's Kym Gable reports.

He knew how to run both of them. Out of bussines. But sears had had money problems for years. Mainly becuse they started to bring in made in twian tools insted of craftsman made in America tools. This pissed off union workers, and a lot of them stoped shopping at sears becuse of it. I mean if your going to buy cheap tools why pay high markups just shop at harbor freight its the same shit different wrapper. I'll buy made in the USA over imported stuff and im not union. Its not price its qulity. Tools should last you a lifetime Not a few years. So you loose one on the job dont cry about it just buy a replacement. Ive lost so many snap on tools in cars ive worked on its not even funny. But ill still buy the snap on becuse I need it to work. You cant rely on cheap tools to do the job. Craftsman tools went down hill after that ceo took over. And people stoped shopping at sears. They also raised prices way above market value. I seen tool boxes the asking price was 2 and 3 times its value. Its pretty dam bad when a husky tool box wS built better or worse the harbor freight box was as good as snap on at 1/4 or less the price.

Its heartbreaking to hear that all those crew members, supervisors, and managers had to go home unemployed. I had a kmart in my home town and felt bad. A buddy of mine, whos mother worked there for years. Hopefully all kmart employees found another job, and still keep in touch with one another.

It is sad to see a icon go down. I mean The Kmart by me closed a year ago. And I was like this is it. The store we all went to before Walmart came to town. And I still would go there but not much. They just did not keep up on I guess products people want selection. And seeing this makes it seem so real. That some of these people that worked for Kmart cared and loved there jobs. And these people lost more then a place to call work. I do not care what it is sad to see once number one is now dying more by the day. And kids today will never know what Kmart ever was. I wish the company could some how do a turn around but we all know it is to late for that. RIP Kmart

for me the kmart close to where i live closed in 2014 and then before that another one closed in 2001/2002 or so and then the last close by kmart closed in 2016. sad to say they are all going away. just recently 2 more in washington state closed up

I remember when the one in my hometown capitola, CA closed. I was a kid but I was saddened by the fact the k cafe was no more. Kmart truly was a great place to shop. The blue light specials, the gigantic registers, the tv aisle, etc. It's all missed by many and it's a shame future generations won't experience that.

I have family in Greensboro, my immediate family has also bought property around there, down one of the country highways towards the Randolph County border. I’m from New York, my personal Kmart was in Queens before I moved to Long Island, but I think the Greensboro Kmart was on High Point Road / Gate City since they changed the name

I feel her pain I miss my store when they closed it. I was a shift supervisor so I was in tears on our last day! The CEO doesn’t care about the stores and refuses to innovate them now we are down to less than 13 Kmart I think as of now. They will probably be gone by the end of the year.

@@creedyfbaby The reason why they don’t have the money is because the CEO misappropriated their funds by spending everything on the shop your way rewards program online and giving to the shareholders. He did NOT invest in the companies infrastructure. The CEO openly admitted there is no return investment on investing in the stores he wasn’t interested in saving the retailer he was interested in its real estate. He only cared about the shop your way online platforms. He’s a hedge fund manager more than a ceo. Hedge funds strips and sells companies kinda like a home flipper. Kmart and Sears was in bad shape before he got them but they were still salvageable but he made them even worse by stripping and selling their assets among dozens of Ill will practices. If you followed the news over this company over the years you would know quite a bit of what he’s done to it. And me being a former employee I would know because I seen it unfold.

It's not quite so much online shopping that did them out, it's because they just didn't keep up. They didn't reinvest in their stores, they really didn't innovate much. The only way the closings would've worked as if they would've taken that money and actually reinvested and took care of their remaining stores but rather they just used it to keep them going. I loved Kmart and miss them very much but when you went in there, you could tell there was a lot of neglect. That's what ultimately did them in, a lot of bad leadership decisions.
