This is the best lyrical breakdown I've seen so far. Gaga's take on how Jake saw Taylor as a conquest is spot on and made me realize what Taylor probably meant by the "double-cross" reference. It's as if Taylor felt betrayed by Jake (hence the "double-cross") because he told her that if they had been closer in age they would have been fine and then proceeded to date another younger woman whose age is closer to Taylor's during their relationship.

I don't think Jake saw her as a conquest as such but I think he liked the way she never questioned him and the slight power imbalance present due to their ages. Then when she starts to see cracks in their relationship and doesn't put up with him treating her badly, he blames her age when it's something she can't change about herself. Clearly it wasn't her age because every woman he's dated since has been under 25 when he's 40. I suspect it was the fact she wised up to who he was and the fact he only wanted a niave girl who looked pretty and didn't ask questions. All the new girls have been him looking for that.

There's a line in Tolerate It on evermore that says "gain the weight of you then lose it". I think it's like...they were a unit, 2 souls combined...then after the relationship explodes, she comes home wounded & alone, without her 'other half'. I think the difference between the 2 songs is that in this song it's like she's missing the 'weight' of him...but 10 years later the 'weight' she sheds is freedom from a toxic relationship.

You should have your grandparents review "The Moment I Knew" for the story of the 21st birthday party: she doesn't mention her dad being there, but she mentions the fact that his friends showed up --- and he didn't. It was a bonus track on the original album. Oh, let Papa know, these lyrics aren't new; she went back to Liz Rose (co-writer from TS, and Fearless) to trim it down to something that would fit on the first version of the album. She plans on vinyl releases more than most do today, so it is sort of "All the song that fits" in the space.

While I feel they were spot on about the keychain, it really showed his childish temper as well in the short film. The soldier half his weight I believe (I could be wrong) was also a direct connection to Jake because it references a role in a movie he was in. But I could be remembering incorrectly lol

Yup. She had his number way back at 22 and here we are a decade later & he's still dating women in their 20s. I think he's been in a relationship for 5 years but he's now 40 and she's 25. Their relationship never would have worked because she's too strong & too smart to let someone try to mold her into who they want her to be. Men date women half their age because 20 year olds haven't yet figured out who they are. He wanted a pretty girl to adore him, not be 'needy', but be available to him at all times, and be cool with not getting any of that stuff in return. NOBODY PUTS TAYLOR IN A CORNER!!!

For me it means treating the person with respect and realizing that this is not a game for them they are not something to be played with they are a person with wants and needs I think it's absolutely terrible what Jake did to her he was absolutely childish and immature and put himself before Taylor she was looking to him hoping that he would take the lead and he didn't that's not how it should be at all that's the problem I have with age gaps in relationships the younger person has to take care of the older one when it should be the other way around as I said before it's not a game and it's not something to be taken lightly I'm so glad I found this channel
