The second tower on Euan's day followed a long, long lunch break, where Marc almost joined in with some Rickmansworth Morris Dancers! It also enabled us to "grab" this part of the Metropolitan line :-)
Nonetheless, we made it here in one piece, for an old favourite, Grandsire Caters. By now, we had picked up a Smashley "en route", who grabbed the tower (whilst ringing like a ballerina being electrocuted). We then finished with a few rounds on the back eight, which lived up to the expectations Marc had set
Watford are a very nice Gillett & Johnston ten. The back eight were cast in 1919, using metal from a previous eight; whilst it was the intention to cast a ten, the money wasn't available at this time. The two trebles were added in 1946, also cast by Gillett and Johnston; I strongly suspect both the 1919 and 1946 castings were War tributes. They retain their original G&J fittings, including the unusual "ball and trough" slider system.
The bells sound lovely and handle well, although I personally thought the eight were better than the ten. The church has just been modernised inside, and looks very smart indeed.
