G.Spartan, thank you for your ideas! I love the 'greenhouse' setup. Currently at day 29, and transfering my garden from my first 'base' (just a semi-fortified little cabin in the woods) to my still-in-progress future badass-ZOMGWTFPWN base downtown :) I completed so far only 1/4th of the base design but was able to withstand the 28 horde pretty well. Dedicated one whole day to hunting and nest plundering (bow/crossbow buff here, no guns). I ended up with ~70 hides and meat, ~400 feathers and have now 4 forges running plus the meat stew whoa! Just bragging. I took over a small piece of flat fertile land downtown and starting to farm there. Wanted to do it the old style with poles and barbed wire but the wire sucks at stopping things, it 'just' slows them down. So: a wall or a sunken garden like your one will be the best thing. I must have been a Dwarf in some previous life, I always end up deep underground smashig rocks and smelling torch smoke.

Hello again! Just popped in to brag a little. I've built a fair amount of 'holes in the ground' bases as you call them (your design) and they work great. Did a couple variations but your concept is awesome. Just finished my brand new underground farm, as per your design. The 'pit' I had to dig was 16x36x6=3456 blocks of dirt to dig out plus the access tunnel and an extra exit 'well' with hatch and all..more than 3500 blocs to dig. And I never use the Auger so busted quite some steel showels. I love to mine so all the walls are concrete with the upper tier and all the 12 pillars of reinforced concrete. The garden data: plopped down 464 blocs of fertile dirt for 232 plant plots. Plus all the cotton I can squeeze in between. You were so right: my days are now twice as long than before and the nights just go by when I can farm at will. I realized I will need thousands of corn for food and alcohol, and tons of cotton to level up my Medicine etc. Plus, put all that collected animal fat from zombies and hunting animals to good use: almost 30.000 fuel from biogas :) Bike has a nice 595 engine, so it will last me for quite a while all that gas :) Bummer: can't loot the dead through the grates. Thus the extra exit with hatch nearby. Surrounded the garden with 4 rows of log spikes to break them zombie's legs: much easier to head-shot them while they are slowly dragging their bellies legless :) In that role the sniper rifle is just brutal. I never try to 'finish' the game, I rather try to 'live' the game world, day by day, not just surviving but tryin to make a more-less normal post-apocaliptic RP 'life'. Thanks again for the great ideas, they really did 'spark' my creativity hehe.

Hello! This here was my first underground garden (actually a greenhouse lol), in the previous game. The glass 'windows' has to be 'glass PANE', and not glass bloc, otherwise the plants can't 'see' the sky and will just wither and die. Even with these panes, the thing was a bit wonky here and there, like there were dead spots where I could not plant a seed. Also, the openings are 1x1 and the glass panes being soo fragile, sometimes a stray bullet or a blast from a poorly aimed explosive bolt would shatter the glass and thus make a hole in the ceiling. What would happen, is that on Horde nights I would find my beautiful garden full of growling zombies and the plants and soil destroyed, all messed up. This system with iron gratings seems to work much better, and a lot less use of reinforced concrete too. Old system: imgur.com/a/FHhFP And the new system, much bigger: imgur.com/a/H0948 and the roof layout (sorry for the dead Z's :D ) imgur.com/a/gkp2O

I stole your tower design, I made a 20x20 pit down to bedrock on MP server All Night Gamers B. It's not totally finished yet but I finished clearing out the pit this morning and got all the bottom section done and spiked out, now building the center tower upwards but its so far down in the ground. Starting to regret clearing out the whole center instead of leaving the center and carving out the bottom of it and building a tower on top and just digging down through the middle. lol

glad to see i wasn't the only one who had the idea to build a garden under ground. though to be honest thought i was only one who had that idea for awhile till seeing this video.
@GrandSpartan8 жыл бұрын
In the beginning, we used to grow everything down at bedrock and grow it with torches. You would also have to keep everything watered back then as well. Took quite a bit of planning back then to grow that way, but was well worth it. This is the best I could do for now with all the crops needing actual sunlight to grow, but still be protected underground.

nice build! iron bars can hang out at least 6 blocks with no support so you could have pillars 12 apart with no issues. it seems a lot of unnecessary resources expended. ive never had issues with surface farms ever. even at night. that said...it has a cool factor. hehe
@GrandSpartan8 жыл бұрын
You are not taking in account that in each square of 4 pillars, there are 32 bars. I tried this same build with the pillars just one more block apart. The bars fell in without even walking on them. So yes, you do need to have them spaced apart just as I have them or you will have a mess on your hands.

+Grand Spartan really a great idea but i have a tip: use metal trussings to put the iron bars on. because of the load the trussings can hold you can place about 11 bars on them without needing a pillar while they collapse after 6 if connected to concrete. so you can use the free space to grow corn and stuff 😆

Your ideas are amazing and inspired my wife and me a lot.The time and the work you put in all of your bases are great to see. We just started with the game a week ago and the are still so many things to do better. How are you solving the food and water problem?

Here is a link to the speed build, which you can pause or play back in 1/4 speed, similar to the base in the video. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gWe3dGCVm8Rqnas You can just build the garden out on the ground. I prefer to have it enclosed so that I can garden at night without being pestered by zombies. If you watch my most recent Let's Play Series, you will see how I approach everything from early game to late. Here is a link to the first episode of the series. kzbin.info/www/bejne/mKDbq35je9eHqJo

@GrandSpartan7 жыл бұрын
As per the description, this does not work with trees beyond Alpha 14. On alpha 15 they changed it so that the trees will destroy the blocks as it grows through them. You would have to plant the trees at bedrock to assure that they don't hit the bars.

I like this one the best currently. Always go 3 high on the pillars. When they stack up on spike/corpses, you don't want them beating on a flat block. Making the pillars 3 high will prevent this for the most part.
@denniswitvers51248 жыл бұрын
So for the tree part. I read that its fixed now and that the trees leave a hole where the bars where. Now i am wondering what if you make the hole deepenough for the trees to fit in? I dont know the max height that a tree can get, but would that work. If you make it deep enough?
@GrandSpartan8 жыл бұрын
A subscriber on the channel here did say that he tried it at a lower depth and that it does work. You would have to go pretty deep though. Something like 36 blocks or so.

@GrandSpartan8 жыл бұрын
This is A 14.6 on PC. Here I used iron bars, but you could use glass/windows as long as the zombies cannot attack them. I would not use glass on this build as the cops would shoot projectiles at you and break through.

+Grand Spartan so iron bars work as well? great thats all i wanted to know thanks

Can you explain to me how the tree farm works and how it is self sufficient?
@GrandSpartan8 жыл бұрын
The advantage to having it underground and in one place is, 1 - You don't have to leave your base running around trying to find trees for wood. 2 - You can cut the trees at night time without being bothered by the zombies. This saves your precious daylight hours for more important things. 3. Everything is spaced so that as you cut the tree, you can immediately plant another in the hole in which you cut the last one. 4 - You have 30k wood at your disposal every couple game days right at your finger tips. So many beneficial factors play into having an underground tree farm in your base.

how do you make white bars as a room for the trees? I play on pc what is it called so I can craft some too thank you! :)
@GrandSpartan8 жыл бұрын
They are actually red. The gamma may have been turned a bit too high as well as my mining helmet turned on during daylight. They are called ( iron bars). You can craft them in the forge. This build was on Alpha 14. The tree farm part of this is no longer valid, as the trees do not grow through the bars anymore as stated in the description. However, you may still grow an underground garden with this build.

I build an underground garden yesterday and my trees destroy the bars where they grow. Was there a change since your video? I guess it's zombieproof as long as the trees are there, but that way I can't chop them at night, since they take to long to fill their gap again.
@GrandSpartan8 жыл бұрын
There must have been a change in the bars since the video. Thank you for letting me know! I will post a note in the description.
@LtksK8 жыл бұрын
Maybe they interact with the bars only on a certain height (since I have another one). Is your garden still alive and can you check? In that case I could just change the height. If they actually changed it, I would just place a wooden frame as a cover everytime I chop a tree. The tree would destroy it, but it's only 5 wood loss for each tree. The only problem would be, that a Zombie could slip in for a second, if my timing is bad.
@GrandSpartan8 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately I cannot. The server has been wiped since I did this build. I had another I built a short time ago on SP, but deleted the save game after I completed it and made the video The build was on Navesgane and I knew I would never play on it again. Thank you for letting me know. I did not notice the same thing happen to the most recent on that I built though. It could have something to do with the height the tree makes contact at. I walked all around up top when the trees were growing and didn't notice any bars missing.
@LtksK8 жыл бұрын
I now built a single bar at your height to test it. But I have to wait till the tree grows. I also measured how deep I would have to dig to cover the whole tree, but I guess that would be too much work for only trees. I'd rather plant my trees outside and use the garden only for other plants. Or as I already thought of, I would just fill in the gap with a wooden frame everytime. And since your videos helped me a lot to get started, letting you know about changes is the least I can do. ;) Edit: The tree grew and destroyed the bars at the same height your setup has. So it was actually changed.
@RedScareClair7 жыл бұрын
the not attacking part is only semi true. zombies attack directly in front of them therefore a crawler can in fact attack "down"
@GrandSpartan7 жыл бұрын
There is a part two to this, where I use wood frames to disprove this theory of zombies attacking downward. The Fun Pimps took the ability for zombies to attack straight down many alphas ago. They were digging to bedrock, turning whole maps into swiss cheese, and crashing games by doing so. Here is part one of two. kzbin.info/www/bejne/oHK6Y32Vm9GGm80

I have had that happen after hundreds of days playing before. The base would be fine for a long time, then all of a sudden random blocks would just start falling off here and there. When you would try to replace them, they would just fall off again. Think it is just an issue with the game. Have not had that happen yet in A15.
