A fine actor. If an actor can make you hate the character as though they were real is truly doing a good job.

Mr Bronson saying "Damn the rules." That was a classic though I went off him with his victimization of Kendall. Michael Sheard was pure class though I still enjoy his performances looking back: made me terrified of senior school. I did have a few old style masters but their bark was worse than their bite.

Maybe so but Kendall had an Attitude and thought he was above the rules no one is and no one should have preferential treatment like Mcluski gave him so I could see where Bronson was coming from.
@kirrithkovacs50973 жыл бұрын
I love the Bronson character but I wish they'd done more with the strict disciplinarian being misunderstood rather than a vengeful bully. (more like J.k Simmons in Whiplash). I suppose a sympathetic angle would have been seen as justifying his grammar school approach, and they wanted to promote comprehensives. They seem to try this later on a bit, but it was too little too late.

Whilst Bronson went about dealing with Kendall the wrong way (by showing that he’s getting to him) he was right to want to bring him into line. As he said school is not a restaurant where you pick and choose from a menu, what makes him so special that he feels he shouldn’t follow the rules that everyone else has to. He is rude, disrespectful and insolent to Bronson. And if he just walked in and out of a job as he pleased he’d have got the sack so a bit of cold water that you can’t just do what you want in life

Why work with kids if you hate them? .. the bizarre aspect of the education system from decades past.
@timrollpickering2 жыл бұрын
It's more this particular sort of school and children. Mr Bronson came to Grange Hill when it merged with Rodney Bennett (and also Brookdale). Rodney Bennett appears to have been a grammar school that kept up the ethos post the abolition of selection but the merged school was a super comprehensive. Bronson bitterly hated the changes but doesn't seem to have had other options - he looks the age where teachers are nearly always in their final school and looking only for internal promotion and eventual retirement rather than relocating (especially as his primary subject - Latin - was going out of fashion).
@johnbeck57952 жыл бұрын
@@timrollpickering Regardless of the school, teachers are working with kids. Discipline of course is an element of education but to conduct yourself so the kids you teach loathe you does not inspire respect from them. My school days were the 70s/80s and some of the teachers simply should not have been in the education profession. One teacher for example enjoyed disciplining kids by humiliating them if they stepped out of line.
@timrollpickering2 жыл бұрын
@@johnbeck5795 The problem is there was a generation and a category of schools where the prevailing attitude was that respect for teachers was *automatic* and not something that had to be earned. And so such teachers didn't care what the pupils thought of them - only that they did what they should. (And not just the kids - in Bronson's very first episode he bluntly tells Mr Smart to "Give place to your betters" in an argument over room bookings.) It's a real problem but as long as it prevailed (and in some places still prevails) it went well beyond individual teachers and into the whole ethos of a school.
@johnbeck57952 жыл бұрын
@@timrollpickering At the school I attended, it extended to violence by teaching staff. Slapping and one teacher was willing to kick. When he threw a kid out of a class, he actually physically pushed them all the way out. Shouting for effect to maintain control is acceptable but when teaching staff use violence, that's when they should be disciplined.
