Tac. Keep the cutting edge of the maul toward the edge of the log. Also it is best to work around a large piece rather than trying to center split. Take outside slices off first and then go for the center split. Peace.

Something else for my shopping list, a scout leader tip " pop the axe in the put the log on your shoulder. Slam the back of the axe down on the block and use its own weight to split it. Mostly works first time and much less work.

I'm good between three tools for splitting . My dad's 8 lb maul from when he was a kid. A simple wedge. And a regular 4 lb felling axe. I split big 4 foot poplar logs with 12+ inch diameter in less than 10 swings. (For bonfires)

First off, I love Gransfors Bruks. Their axes and tools are first rate and I own several. However, I noticed you compared a splitting axe to a splitting maul so obviously there would be a noticeable difference.. Gransfors Bruks also makes a splitting axe and that would have been a more useful comparison.. Nonetheless, their maul is AWESOME!
@thelasthuntsmanoutdoors9 жыл бұрын
Nice badass axe there Tac, you should check out H&B Forge. If you like Grasfors and Bruks you'll like these. They focus more so on tomahawks, all handmade, 1095 and here in the USA. I know your a tomahawk guy, should try one out. Love mine, its still my favorite tomahawk. Still hair shaving sharp after a lot of use, just strap it a few times here in there, the edge is convex like my Blackjack tac ops 8.
@mealex3039 жыл бұрын
Yo tac!! What I picked up off my Dad was he used a felling axe a touch bigger than the old one you put together but used a heavy plastic sledge hammer along with it he would get a good strike then leave it in the wood and follow with the sledge to split the logs ? He uses the same idea with a small axe and lump hammer for camping and I find it works well. But man your New One rocks bro people shall call you Thor from now on lol!! Peace out

When splitting wood try putting the logs in an old tire. It will save you from chasing after the wood and miss hits hit the tire saving your legs and maul.

I'm not really a fan of using a splitting log, I think it takes a lot of power out of my swing. I'd rather use a low-cut stump. I'm not really tall or strong, but splitting wood should be done close to the ground, in my opinion. I may have to liberate a plastic wire spool for a good splitting base. The flats might protect my grass or driveway?

GB make great axes and mauls but the new Fiskars Iso core maul (not the x27axe) is incredible. At my age (ancient) I can't justify buying one as the x27 plus my old maul meet my needs. Anything tougher and I resort to the chainsaw or hydraulic splitter but if your young and just starting out check out the Fiskars maul.
@PsylomeAlpha7 жыл бұрын
it took you four hits to get the old axe _in_ to the wood by about two inches.
@trippeetoast64408 жыл бұрын
that first axe looks more like a forest axe, maybe a felling axe
@hunterduncan10787 жыл бұрын
TrippeeToast that's what I thought. The grind on that axe and the thickness of it looks much more like a felling axe as opposed to an actual splitting maul which has a much more wedge-like shape to the entire blade.
