They basically threw everything into season one. The writers approached it assuming they were only going to get one season and packed it with as much stuff that they wanted to do as they could. It made for a great first season. After that it was up and down but generally leaning on the positive side for the first five seasons and any time they went back to Reverse Flash, it was outstanding but by the end of the run you could tell that the budget had been slashed and they were running out of ideas (though the final season still has some stellar material, again involving Thawne).

I think they suffered a lot due to the whole Villian of the Week thing that the CW likes. It made them cycle through so many Iconic Villains and wrap them up in one episode so that they never seemed truely dangerous and The Flash never felt in danger. Some of those villains could of had solid couple of episode arcs in season to really build them up and be a threat so that it didnt feel like every season was about another evil speedster.

I don't think the budget was slashed per se, just more went to pay crew/actors raises, so not enough money was there anymore of the VFX and such, they probably should've started doing shorter seasons to make better use of their budget (and honestly for time).

The CW's worst mistake was forcing shows to run every single season for 22-23 episodes of 42 minutes each non-stop following an old TV formula (Supernatural being the exception). Shows need to take a break. Game of Thrones, Cobra Kai, Stranger Things take over a year of a break but continue with few but strong seasons instead of so many weak ones. Not to menton running so many shows at once that the writers could not keep consistency in storylines and leaving plot-holes. I believe taking a year long or more of a break could have let the shows coexist with the movies. But who knows, that's every single big company that sees the success in one department and wants to mimic that formula with their own bigger budget. It never made sense to me that WB would compete against the interest of its own products and characters.

Compete? Or use their ip to its fullest extent knowing they won’t make as much money but want to create stories like most movie distributing companies used to want to do. They’re still one of the few companies that care more about creating stories rather than being money hungry. Look at how they canned the batgirl movie knowing how much money they lost. Look how they released their biggest movies day & date on hbo max & theaters the same day knowing they were gonna lose so much money. They still support physical media despite Disney saying originally that their Disney plus shows were never gonna be available anywhere else & would only be on streaming until they decided “oh shoot, we’re not making as much money as we thought to get these budgets back so let’s release these on 4K & regular blu-Ray steelbook even though we said that we were never gonna do that” but meanwhile dc released their sandman Netflix series on dvd & their L*cifer series that was on Netflix on dvd, their dc universe streaming service/hbo max/max series young Justice, doom patrol, Harley Quinn & others on dvd so that people didn’t have only one choice of how to watch them. They still care about creating stories & don’t care as much about money as others do. Releasing their last few DCEU movies even when they kept flopping after they announced how it was rebooting proves that. Also their dc animated movies & mortal Kombat animated movies being direct to blu-Ray/dvd & digital instead of theaters also proves that. So don’t act like WB is greedy with money because that wouldn’t be true.

I don't think anyone really mentioned this, but I think the mistake the show made was that everything needed to always be BIGGER. The stakes, the powers, the drama. They didn't realize that saying "No really, this next villain is EVEN FASTER than the last fastest villain" really loses its impact the fourth time you do it. The fact that Gustin was able to play it straight despite the ridiculousness is really a testament to him as an actor.

@@mickeyveach3612 Yeah... but, it still was cancelled long before that beginning, middle, and end could be finished. And I don't know if I'd phrase it as him getting "ahead of its cancellation". They just gave themselves insurance in case it was cancelled. That last season was not written with the intention of it being the last. Not even the last episode was! They just shot a series finale ending scene that they knew could be easily tacked on at the end of the last episode just in case they weren't picked up (but, could be deleted if they were). And thank goodness 'cause that tactic did work! But, all of the plotlines and character developments that are mentioned in that final scene were things they had intended on doing on the actual show. So, it's a bit of a shame they were never able to actually do them onscreen. It seems like when the CW does cancel a show, they often do it really last minute. That's what happened to "Angel" way back when. That's why the last like 3-4 episodes of that show seem really rushed 'cause all of a sudden they realized they had to wrap up the show with very little warning.

The CW have to take a lot of the credit for the show running as long as it did. The ratings were never amazing and on any other network it would have been cancelled several times over, which you can also say for Arrow, Legends of Tomorrow, Supergirl, and even non DC shows like Supernatural which had more than a couple of seasons which would have led to cancellation elsewhere, but that network really used to put a lot of faith in building a fan network over instant viewing figures. It's a shame that has come to an end now though.

Still to this day I believe flash should’ve ended at season 6. You had ur first 5 season and then the first half of season 6 led to crisis and that crisis episode event is where the show should’ve ended. 5 seasons with a shorter 6 season is what they should’ve done. Kinda like how arrow had 8 seasons but their 8th season was a shorter but impactful season. Why? Cuz after the first half of season 6 the show was absolute crap for the rest of 6, all of 7, most of 8 and all of 9. It would have a better reputation now if it ended strongly on crisis

when the show became more about Iris and Cecile, over the title character, the show started going downhill. Id say S5 was the beginning of The Iris show ft Barry Allen. By S7, the show was boring. The speedforce story was good in the comics, but did not translate well to live action. And the Mirror Monarch was silly, being defeated because "you're hurting peoples feelings, dont be like your husband." Even the shows finale was a huge let down. Godspeed who can run so fast time freezes, defeated by Cecile throwing her hands up in the air like she just dont care. Savitar, who KILLED Iris originally and then HR, defeated by Nora by stabbing him in his suit back (something Jessie Quick did and it only slowed him down in S3) Zoom, who in S2 snapped a dozen officers necks in a nanosecond, defeated by Katlyn throwing his lightning bolt back at him. (recognising a pattern here). Eobard Thawne, Barry's main enemy, defeated by a woman who can use UV rays. Thawne who is faster than Barry, failed to react to it, while Barry was able to run through the same attack type last season. And lastly, Eddie. Sweet, sweet Eddie. Defeated not by Barry, but by the reminder that he loves Iris. Not to be evil because Iris wouldn't want that. No epic fight, just "dont do this because it will hurt a womans feelings." The show should of skipped the firs half of stuff and started with Brave New World bringing Eddie back, skip the whole "avatar" stuff, have Eddie create his own Legion of Doom villains. Heck, bring back Red Death only this time. Her over acting was the best part of her season, because trhe rest of the time it was the dull adventures of Allegra, Cecile, Chester and Iris. We could of seen the power struggle for leadership. Mistrust since Savitar is a version of Barry, jealousy from Eobard that Eddie wants to kill him. Godspeed on some power trip, Red Death being a sexist against men because it *is* the CW after all, how she doesnt need a man to help her (which then leads to Barry taking her down with ease first). Have the season be Barry picking them off one by one each episode until its just Eobard and Barry left with their S9 suits damaged. Eobard grabs his S1 suit from the time vault and Barry uses his season 2 suit ala a Flash ring. This version of Eobard is the original face, not Wells). This would be the Eobard from before he kills Nora and, at some point, Eddie would tell him Barry's name. You can see where this is going. It comes full circle. Barry and Eobard fight throughout the city, with Iris and Allegra reporting live as cameos from the CW show up. Hawkman. Hawkgirl. The Atom. Female Green Arrow. Sara Lance as Black Canary. Thea as Speedy. Would be a chaotic fight with Eobard doing the time remnant split-remerge trick he used against Barry and Nora in the Cicada season finale. Eventually he would run in a circle and create a time portal and dive in, Barry following. Then it would lead into the events of the pilot. The two fight, we see Barry go into Flash Time and tell his S1 finale self not to interfere before grabbing kid Barry and vanishing. Eobard would kill Nora and run out and we would see S9 Barry running soo fast he starts to glow gold, the suit burns away and he becomes pure energy and his last words would be "Iris. I love you." and he would disappear. And if we *must* include the three new speedsters being chosen, show Iris with baby Nora as she starts to tell her about Barry, leading to him saying "My name is Barry Allen and I was the fastest man alive. I got struck by lightning and became the impossible. A friend once told me that lightning bolt chose me, but now I'm doing the choosing." And show us Avery Ho, Max Mercury and Jess Chambers like in the original finale as it starts o rain, liquids lifting up, implying he's creating 3 new Flash's.

That show became more about Team Flash overall rather than Barry. S5 was not about Iris at all it was about Nora and naturally that being her and Barry’s daughter she was involved.

A comic book inspired show is going to be corny especially the flash because Barry Allen is a dorky nerd. That wasn't the shows problem. The repetitive structure of episodes was the issue especially when original cast members left. But honestly I still prefer season eight and nine to four and five. Too many characters. To the point where Barry ends up being a supporting character in his own show. Is like Superman III or Blade: Trinity. There were episodes where he's barely in them. He shows up at the beginning and doesn't return until the end. Sometimes he doesn't even wear the suit. How do you do a Flash show without The Flash?
