Grant Morrison's Substack is a wealth of behind-the-scenes info about DC Comics. Morrison even insults DC Comics from time to time. This past week Morrison agreed with Wes, new creators should stay away from his Multiversity creations. Grant Morrison explains how new creators like Danny Lore waste his creations for shock value. Morrison even insults DC Comics a bit, making fun of their upcoming nineteenth re-run of Crisis on Infinite Earths, Dark Crisis. DC Comics are digging deep into their back of tricks to associate Dark Crisis with Crisis on Infinite Earths. Modern DC Comics don't sell. So they have to trade on nostalgia, hoping fans will bite. Grant Morrison agrees with Thinking Critical KZbin, insults DC Comics nineteenth re-run of Crisis on Infinite Earths, Dark Crisis.

A lot of writers today wouldn’t put even 5% of the work into a story that Grant Morrison did on Multiversity. I know that it is their property and of course it’s going to be used at some point but it would be nice if DC weren’t using it in such a shallow, surface-level way just for virtue points.

Grant Morrison loves the fans. Up until the pandemic, I attended many of his signings. Watching him hug the fans for selfies. Crack jokes. Watching the fans smile after their experiences. As a long time collector it’s daunting how times have changed. DC made its bed. They pushed out Geoff John’s. Pushed out Grant Morrison. Gone is the creativity. Now DC comic books have become horribly thought out political ads without any entertainment.

Grant Morrison is one of the few remaining comic book legends that definitely do it for the story, it doesn't matter how weird or meta it becomes. Doom Patrol, JLA, Final Crisis, Multiversity, even his The Green Lantern run had some good points. Wish DC involved Morrison again.

I thought Multiversity was a shit meta joke (a comic book about comic books for 12 issues or whatever it was.) At the same time, it was a coherent layout of the Multiverse, and I rate it highly in that regard (and rate it low as a reading experience.) The multiverse has become increasingly incoherent since Scott Snyder (who, like Williamson should NEVER be given the "DC universe architect" role) introduced a second "dark multiverse" and revealed there is at a minimum one secret univers beyond the 52 in Multiversity.

I do agree with Morrison that it is a loss when the Multiversity, which was created to allow entire franchises--each Earth, at the least--becomes a mere source for someone else's cannon fodder. When I heard about the possibility for a line of comics for each Earth, I was interested. But now, I much prefer to just try to understand the DCU, both Morrison's work, and that of others, through making a series of notes. It's as close as I can come to the idea that so interested me. The problem is, I have no idea how many other people would share my interest. This may well be a major problem for print comics: our society may well have become so thoroughly niche-marketed, that it is now quite impossible to please a mass audience. The result would seem to be just what we're seeing: comic book companies (certainly including DC, although I suspect that all the others have the same problem,) throwing whatever they can against the wall, trying to see if it sticks, which if "sticking" means that it enjoys the runaway success of early Superman, then nothing sticks. There's only a limited number of gimmicks that can then be tried...and all of them have been tried, repeatedly. Want to try to create an analogue of what some other company is doing, with some apparent success? It's been done. Want to amalgamate whichever character with whichever other character? It's been done. Want to throw a major crisis involving all of your characters? Do I even need to say it? We are talking about DC, after all. Here is the one-and-only idea that I have in response. (I claim no other virtue for this thought than that.) Maybe print comics have outlived their usefulness. Maybe it would be best if all the copyright-owners, and trademark-owners simply dropped all of their fantastic fictions into the public domain. I know, I know...there's a greater chance that any given individual will win the Powerball ten weeks running. It simply isn't going to happen. So...does anybody have any better ideas? Or even just any other ones? But maybe we now need to decide for ourselves what works for us, (and what doesn't,) and explore the ideas that appeal to us as individuals. I'd like to see more multiverse, more Shazam Magiclands, and more Immortals, and more exploration of the fun/whimsical side of DC.

While I was not the biggest fan of Grant Morrison's work he is a solid writer. What is more that he is correct when stating that the alternate earth's should be treated as their own franchises and, like the marvel knock off version, should be treated as if it were that world and not just disposable pieces. It is sad that they never really tried to explore another earth's heroes which might be able to give them the boost they needed. Even earth 2 which wasn't that great at least tried. Granted the bigger problem is they willing keep going back to the well so often and fail to realize it isn't working anymore.

I'll give Peter J Tomasi this, at least he had Red Racer die like a Hero, an not a villain, but even with Red Racer being a Speedster, we know even Speedsters can survive death, how many times have we seen this in DC Lore. Sure I can understand Grants Morrisons Grievance & he is right on many points, but he can't neglect the fact that Even Tomasi respected the Hero origin of Red Racer, whether it was his idea or Didios to kill the character off. Tomasi himself has shown how much he respects the past of previous characters in his writing many times, like damn, he has even written a Young Justice story for crying out loud.

This is the aspect of it all that I hate the most they never honor or awknoldge the amazing women or minority creators of all these groups that came before. The main reason is because most of these people know nothing of comics history. The same people who focus on the sexualization of female characters when all the male superheroes are sexualized too. Even many of the men have created many characters of all sorts of sex, races, and sexualities. It’s really is apparent how little they know about comics and even being in the industry awhile they still haven’t learned about any of it.

Not that I think it’s going to be really good quite honestly because we really don’t need this particular book but Morrison is a bit of a hypocrite here. If you’ve watched the doc about him he was at one point pitching a Miracleman story and he wrote to Alan Moore to get his blessing to write it and Moore basically slagged him and told him to stay away from it. Granted Miracleman isn’t Moore’s creation but he put a lot of thought and energy in the title and pretty much made his version his own and synonymous with the character.

Just wanted to thank you for speaking your mind on things and the state of DC in general. I wouldn’t waste a dime on dark crisis. Been buying Batman since 1990. I must say that if things keep going in this direction I will be dropping all DC titles I buy now. I think the industry may of out grown me.

I salute you George. Your art will be used by dc to bump up sales to this shitty dark crisis. As well as you said Wes that dc keeps coming back but failing again and again. I still think that Grant should have been given a free hand to play out the multiverse. I still think Grant and Geoffe would be the pair to see it through the best multiverse can be envisioned and executed. I would have bought it freely if it would have been George on art duty. Oh my stars and garters! Dumb DC decision-makers like marvel. Be safe. Mabuhay!

DC is making itself an easy target these days. Its really tragic. But you cant blame a publisher. They hire people and pay them an honest wage to produce material that can stimulate sales. I gotta say Grants Green Lantern run seemed like an attempt to sabatoge and derail the GL franchise. Liam Sharpes visuals are always a treat. But Grant made a GL book thats made to look at and not really generate sales. Im a life long GL reader and i gotta say that Grant's GL really disappointed me. It even dragged identity politics into the mix. Lets face it after 40 years at DC Mr.Morrisons best days are probably over at least at DC. Hes writing storys to entertain himself.

I think that Grant Morrison is right on this issue. The Batman who Laughs, Robin King and now the Batwoman who Laughs are probably the worst characters ever created. DC just doesn’t care about anything anymore. Dark Crisis is just another Crisis event that no one cares about. I thought that Final Crisis would be it but no, DC decides to keep going back to a well that’s completely dry. When is DC going to learn to just leave things well enough alone. Each Earth in the Multiverse should be set in its own continuity. No Crisis events or crossovers, just let Grant Morrison or Geoff Johns write their own stories and leave it at that. David Zaslav should just sell DC Comics and get rid of it.

You know, I may be in the minority here, but when I read "Crisis on Infinite Earths" (years after initial publication - just wanted to see what the hype was about), I didn't find the story all that interesting or compelling. I don't understand why it's being held up as some sort of inspirational standard for copy-cats of what was already a mediocre story to begin with (in my opinion, of course). The art was great, but the story itself was forgettable for me.
