I take a trip to Ramsbottom to visit the ruins of Grants Tower a place I used to visit as a kid. The story behind this place is very history rich and somewhat of a noble element by that I refer to the Grant Brothers who were different to the usual employers of the time, they had compassion and treated their workforce as people and gave them days off and more, I explain more in the video so watch it all. A real piece of historic preservation, Mr Buckley the current owner has taken on the task of restoring this former magnificent structure which sits in a dominant position over the ramsbottom valley. Exploring the ramsbottom ruins was brilliant and I recommend you go for a walk and take a look at it.

Well done Thanks for sharing this I first heard about Grants tower when I was working as a steeplejack in Manchester James Duncan Wright steeplejack was often talked about and his methods of rigging chimneys and towers He's mentioned in books particularly "Adventures of steeplejack" and "The fastest man" by Chris Aspin Published by Helmshore local history 2008 It's mentioned that the tower was built by the Grants in memory of their poverty when they first came to Lancashire from Scotland. They took shelter on the bare heath were the tower now stands

Conor thanks for your film of Grant's Tower you picked a lovely day for it. It's great to have the nostalgia and a father to have the nous to take you. Good aerial shots. Edwin Waugh the dialect poet is pronounced "War". St. Andrews Church was funded by the Grants after their patron saint. Sir Robert Peel was born at Chamber Hall beside where the railway southwards enters Bury. There is a statue of him in from of St. Mary's Parish Church in Bury. He is facing Tamworth where he was M.P. The curious thing about the statue is that his waistcoat fastens the "wrong way" ie. the female way. This was held that the sculptor got it "wrong". The answer to this lies in Robert Peel's love for hunting. He was a crackshot at 10 years old. His father Robert Peel Senior trained him in outdoor pursuits, a bit like your dad. ☺ He rode to hounds whenever he could. On one of these hunts he was unhorsed and damaged a thumb. He was always a practical man so had his tailor make his waistcoats the female way so he could use his other thumb to fasten it. The statue only shows one thumb. Yes calico printing was their staple and as you infer has a Mcr. connection. Mayfield Station is a wonderful building and I'm glad it's being preserved. I only went in once when it was open and remember this great iron staircase from the hall up to the platform area. One of the best (to me) buildings in Mcr. is the St. James's Building near the old St. James's Church. The St. James's Building on Oxford Street was built for the Calico Association and has the Rochdale Canal below it. Incidently near St. James's Church off Portland Street the office building "Bank Chambers" (?) stands. It looks pretty ordinary but is anything but. It's basement walls are 16 feet think and until the '80's was the gold bullion vault for the Bank of England. Much obliged for the film. 👍 Mark

Yes Sir Robert Peel's father was a farmer in Blackburn. He did some textiles part-time like many farmers. He invented a pattern and was called "Paisley Peel". I think Robert Peel Junior was one of ten children and his father later moved to near Market Drayton. Peel went to Harrow where he too his musket and had it kept by a townsperson. He became the first ever person to get a double first at Oxford. He was at Christ Church College same as the Reverend Dodgson (Lewis Carroll) and Dean Liddlell whose daughter was Alice. He was the first Prime Minister from a non-aristocratic background and as you richly observed was instrumental in the formation of the police force hence "Bobbies". He also repealed the Corn Laws which kept the price of bread artificially high. At Summerseat there was Joshua Hoyle's Mill. As far as I know (AFAIK) they had an office on London Road, Mcr. Now the Malmaison Hotel designed by Heathcote (I think). Sadly I think Peel was killed in another accident when he fell from his horse. I also believe there is an identical statue in Tamworth looking in the opposite direction towards Bury, the place of his birth. If you are in Bury look up the statue. Yes Mcr. suffered terribly in the Christmas Blitz of '40. A lot of fine buildings were affected. All Saints Church on Oxford Road and the Assize Courts next to Strangeways. The latter designed by Alfred Waterhouse and looked like the Town Hall and the University of Manchester main block. In WW1 Grant's Tower would have seen the Zeppelin. There were I think 2 Zeppelin raids on the Manchester Area. One came over the North Sea then down the Irwell Valley and bombed the sewage works at Irwell Vale and Holcombe. Regards, Mark.👍

@@CURBEXUK Yes well we all learn and I am indebted to you for that. 👍. There were two Zep raids one in 1918 but one on the evening of 25th September/morning of 26th September 1916. Zeppelin L21 which had come over from Todmorden came down the River Irwell Valley dropping bombs as it went before turning East and doing a loop round Bolton then heading North to Blackburn before heading back over the North Sea. One of my friends sadly deceased, told me his father was at the front in Flanders and his mother brought up three children. She went to work at a mill I think it was about 6.00a.m. but the boss said the mill had been attacked and the gas mains was fractured. On It's southward flight the Zeppelin must have been close, too close too Grant's Tower and clearly visible and audible. It's important that these episodes are not lost, just like Peterloo or the Munich Air Disaster. They are living social history. Thanks once again Connor. 🙂
