Great video. What I normally do with my granular fertilizer.....is either add it to my watering water and let it dissolve, and in that way it kind of does act like a liquid fertilizer. Also what I do with the granules, is crush them up with a mortar and pestle into a powder...which allows me to top dress my plants aswell....granular nutrients in my case is the go to....very versatile, as you can liquid feed, top dress and sprinkle around plants.

I know this video is a couple months old but super helpful. My question is how often do you use each of these? (for example is it every two weeks for liquid fertilizer and every month for grandular). I don't want to over fertilize- not sure if that's a thing. 😂🌱

Does it make a difference which one is best, if you're applying to plants in grow bags?

Container gardens benefit from both granular and water soluble fertilizers, but they do not do well if you only use granular fertilizers. As I explain in the video, container gardens wash out regularly and have limited soil life, so they rely on water soluble fertilizers more than an in-ground garden.

Jobes works well for some of us in southern climates that struggle with iron deficiency in the soil. Espoma does NOTHING for me, but Jobes has done wonders

Granular fertilizer takes weeks or months to break down. The effects will not be immediate like you'll get with a water soluble fertilizer. Granular fertilizers feed your soil and work over a very long period of time. Your comment indicates to me that your soil needs work and I recommend upping your composting and mulching game. With better amendments, you will see better results. If you're using those round "slow release" synthesized fertilizers, I wouldn't use them if they were free. They are, in my opinion, very cheaply made and are relegated to nothing more than "lawn fertilizers." If you need stronger fertilizers, I would only use a water soluble product like Jack's 20-20-20.

How long does it take for granular fertilizer to break down?

That is going to vary based on many factors: ingredients of the fertilizer, the size of the granules, your soil temperature, your rainfall rate, whether you mulch and compost on top of it, how fertile your soil is, etc. It is going to dramatically vary based on conditions and time of year. It usually begins decomposition within a couple weeks and may take weeks or even months for it all to break down.

Depending on various conditions, it can take upwards of 2 months to fully break down. That doesn't mean it'll take 2 months to see results, just that it'll take that long to fully decompose. A good idea would be to combine the two. Mix in some very light granular fertilizer when you prepare your beds for the growing season, and then use liquid as needed. Granular is also better in the colder seasons since growth tends to be slower and you don't need a shit ton of nutrition then and there.
