A little thought for the folks that question the wisdom of using lower dosages of nitrogen more frequently: In a purely natural environment, the available nitrogen in the soil from decomposing organic matter and other sources rarely exceeds %3 - so a low concentration fertilizer more closely matches what the plants are accustomed to. 🌳👍

No time like the present to jump in. Start small with a few plants, you can likely get some plant starts at this time of year. I would start out with a few containers as it can be easier.

This is my first year for vegs. What a learning curve...first lesson, these are not my usual succulents. I'd hate to have tried this without Scott! I don't have the water soluble fert but I put some of my organic, granular fertilizer in a one gallon jug and let it sit for several days. I bought a bunch of bags of the organic, granular on clearance so I have a LOT. Then I pour some of that into a watering can and fill the remainder of the can with water. It's been working.

@cityofoaks

@@keyphabenyisrael3219 What I used was the Expert Gardener Organics Tomato and Vegetable (the N-P-K numbers are 3-5-6). The bags that I got were 17 pounds and I believe they were marked down to $3.50. I also got some Jobes brand organic, granular tomato and vegetable fertilizer at the same time but the expiration date on it was sooner than the Expert Gardener, which I still have, so I used the Jobes up first (the Jobes was about the same weight bags and about the same price). At the same time I got 1 gallon jugs of the Alaska brand fish emulsion for $1. The weird thing is that the quart bottles of the same brand fish emulsion were more expensive than the 1 gallon jugs... go figure (no real difference in the expiration dates on either the 1 gallon jugs or quart bottles). Check Walmart when they are doing their end of summer clearance.

Also in Texas, when you mentioned all the rain, and feeding now before there's another week of rain, I paused the video to go feed my own garden because I forgot to this morning! lol. Personally have used a watering can, but decided to do your method today, and it didn't take nearly as long, and didn't get near as much of the smelly fish emulsion splashed back on me! Don't know why I never though of just doing it with a 5 gallon bucket and re-used sour cream container before...
@ScottHead

Yes, the small bucket is a gallon, I use half a gallon for each tomato plant, meaning 10 gallons total, two five gallon buckets worth. Since I lost three of my tomatoes, there is a little letf to go around to other plants. I'll mix another five gallons for various potted plants. Easy peasy.

It might not be the right time of year for growing many of the things you have started 4-5 weeks ago. Keep doing what you are doing and give the plants a weak water-soluble all-purpose fertilizer. Other than that, its just about the season and temperatures.

Perfect timing for this video Scott. I am starting the fertilization today. The last plants for the summer garden went in a week ago (mostly flowers) and I am waiting on some seeds to pop up to fill in empty spaces. Now its time in 5b to switch from building the garden to maintaining it. I have a few options for fertilizer. Fish Emulsion, a concoction I am making with water and pelleted chicken manure, and I am starting a bucket of fetid brew from weeds. Google calendar is my friend,, I would be lost without it on my phone.

I'm guessing that Neptune's Harvest is mainly a seaweed solution with a bit of fish emulsion otherwise I'd expect the N to be much higher. I usually use a mix of seaweed and fish emulsion as a base fertilizer and just the seaweed solution when fruiting plants are starting to set. I have to admit I don't apply it as often as I should but still get decent results. I guess the compost keeps them going. Really easy to follow video with good information 👍

How would I know when it's time to harvest my sugar baby watermelon? I planted them in feb after the ice storm, but it didn't put out any flowers until March

I really don't know, I've grown watermelons a few times and usually just harvest them when they feel full and heavy.

I recently bought a ph soil tester and was shocked to learn my potting soil is extremely acidic in the 3-4 ph range. I wonder if it’s from heavy rains here in central Florida. Can you tell me why that is? Thanks!

No clue, too many variables. You can amend to bring the pH closer to neutral.

Do you ever use the neptunes harvest rose and flowering? On Amazon it says for best results use tomato and veg with the the floweing one.... just wondering if it is not needed...

I only use the tomato and veg formular, so far I've not needed any other.

Love your videos. Is the Neptunes Harvest the only thing I need to add or do I need a calcium supplement as well?
@ScottHead

Some additional calcium is a good idea if you know you need it. Like if you have had blossom end rot in the past.

Don't you worry about getting the manure tea on the tomatoes? Could be a significant ecoli risk if tomatoes are eaten raw, isn't it?
@ScottHead
@ScottHead 3 жыл бұрын
No worries, just wash well. Its fish emulsion, not manure, and while funky smelling, it isn't a large source of e. coli.

I was wondering how your organza bags worked on the tomatoes. My tomato blossoms are starting to set fruit, so I'm going to need to figure something out soon to keep the birds away.

Works great! I've been using them on the cherry tomatoes but have not really used them on the larger ones yet, just too much work.
