Thank you so much! It is so weird to have to do this manually, especially after using Word for such a long time. Perhaps Adobe need to write a piece of code that allow users to use some default numbering and bullets without having to do all this work. I spent a good 10 mins trying to do this on my own, before resorting to KZbin for the solution.

You just need to navigate to "Bullets and Numbering" at the Paragraph Style of your section, and change the "Number:" code in the "Numbering Style" section to the following: ^1.^2.^t or in the case of a sub-section to: ^1.^2.^3.^t and so on, if you need to subdivide it further.

Excellent! Your explanation is highly pedagogical, congratulations. 👍🙂 I have three questions, could you please give me some guidance: 1.) if, instead of using one of the preset formats, I want to use a different one or modify one of the existing ones, how should I do it? For example: I would like to use the number format in the first level: 1. For the second level: 1.1. For the third level 1.1.1: etc. But I can't find how to do that from the presets, what I do see, are a series of "weird" characters "^#.^t", And maybe that's the key.... 2.) If I want to add a parenthesis after the number, what kind of character do I need to place and where? 3.) Will there be any Adobe article explaining these "weird" symbols for those of us who don't know about them? Thank you very much!

I'm not 100% sure, but I think InDesign only allows what can be found in its presets. I'm sure a script can be written to accommodate this, though.

I want to use the numbered list paragraph style also in other parts of the document and I want the numbers to start with number 1 again, but the continue with previous number option is making the number continue where it ended in the last place. How to fix that problem?
@GDHT
@GDHT 2 жыл бұрын
I think you could duplicate your numbered list style, and apply that to the new paragraph.
@karalong
@karalong 2 жыл бұрын
@@GDHT I'm having the same problem. Duplicating the numbered list style still continues numbering from the previous list in the document. And even if it worked, creating a new style for every list (and level of each list) would get incredibly confusing if you've got a document with dozens of lists, some of which are multi-level and some of which aren't. You could name them "Numbered List A Level 1" "Numbered List A Level 2" "Numbered List B Level 1" and so on, but that seems to defeat the point of having styles in the first place--in terms of globally adjusting styles in a long document all at once. And unfortunately, that's precisely the kind of doc I'm dealing with. Any alternate ideas?
@kwsim539
@kwsim539 Жыл бұрын
@@GDHT You have to duplicate the list styles for each list in the document? This can get out of control if you are doing this for a magazine, catalog, short story, or even a book.
@kwsim539
@kwsim539 Жыл бұрын
@@GDHT Duplicating the style has no affect. The numbers still continue to the next number in the new list with the copied list style.

You only really need a paragraph style for each level (if I'm understanding you correctly).

@@GDHT Thanks that is what I did just thought there might be a simpler way. What I actually did to work around what maybe a glitch I created I don't know but I set up two for each level 1 - 12 labelled as Level ? start and Level ? continue. The level ? start was set up with the next style was Level ? continue. This was to get it so I started with say 10.1 then everything else would be 10.2 on. My system worked just thought there maybe a simpler way. Thanks
