I explain how to graph exponential functions using tables and transformations from a parent function. Properties of these graphs are also discussed such as domain, range, asymptotes, etc.

Math is absolutely fun, WHEN you understand it. I'm drawn to my math studies over my other courses for the successes I have. I hope your wife's adoration along with the light coming on in each student's eyes is enough to keep you going. Know this professor, some teachers aren't teachers, but tellers of what they know. It takes a teacher to teach. Going back to school this late in life enables me to see the difference. You're doing a great job and I'm very grateful! God bless you!

Wow! honestly this has been the best explanation of exponential functions I have ever seen. my teacher at school was incapable of even understanding it herself and she kept on making revelations in class as she confused us and herself even more. so today I decided I wasn't just going to accept that situation and allow my math skills to start going downhill by letting a lesson that I don't understand pass by me. I looked up exponential functions and honestly I couldn't find a better, easier, simpler explanation than this. thank you very much for making this video. it has helped me tremendously and cleared the my mind block. your explanation is simple. you make everything clear. you even go out of your way to make other complications clear like why anything to the zero power is 1. and u have a great handwriting and stable hands while drawing on the board. so I again, thank you for explaining this and well done sir.

When you have an addition or subtraction inside your math function that is a horizontal shift...(horizontal shifts are often inside a parenthesis). When you have an addition or subtraction outside of your main function that is a vertical shift. Horizontal shifts move in the opposite direction than you would think when first learning about transformations.
@sarahjohnson9147
@sarahjohnson9147 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the further explanation about horizontal shifts. It did seem to go against the grain based on what I've learned about negative and positive numbers. I'm just starting to learn about this topic. I have a Math book, but your teaching of the topic is spot on! It covers the key points in a straightforward manner. As a teacher who is learning more about math, I really appreciate your the time and effort you put into making these videos.

I think you are referring to my note about the horizontal asymptote. The parent function has an asymptote of y=0 which is the value the function approaches a x goes to negative infinity, the y intercept is 1

The domain of exponential functions is all real numbers so you could pick any numbers you like. I like to keep them simple small integers. If you see there is a horizontal shift of 3 units to the right you could do 1,2,3,4,5 instead of a pretty standard -2,-1,0,1,2. I just added three to all those numbers.
@profrobbob
@profrobbob 11 жыл бұрын
From the parent function of y=3^x your problem has a vertical shift up of 1 and a horizontal shift of 4 units to the right. Of course a t-table is always handy to find 3 or 4 points the graph passes through, like using x values of -1,0,1,2,6.

Is the base or the exponent supposed to be x? The horizontal asymptote you are looking for is probably y=1 because the parent function's horizontal asymptote is y=0 and there is a vertical shift of 1 from the +1 outside of the main function.
