I am going to say something that sounds crazy coming from a lawn service provider……
Grass or lawns do not belong here in our desert climate.
Thats right, grass is not native to our desert climate. You do not see lawns or grass growing along the side of our freeways or naturally growing on our mountains or desert climate. That is because grass needs nurtured here in the desert southwest and that comes at a high cost of both money and water which is something we do not have enough of here in Phoenix.
The second biggest reason why we should not have lawns here in Phoenix is because the grass that does grow well here is Bermuda grass. Bermuda grass is actually an invasive species in many parts of the country and actually banned from being planted in the state of Utah. Bermuda grass actually chokes out other grasses that are better for other regions in the US that are not Phoenix.
If you are going to plant a real lawn, we recommend that you only use it sparingly and in smaller areas only in backyards or areas where grass is actually useful for pets and maybe families that want to use the space. If you are using tiny areas along sidewalks or in your front yard for looks only, it is a VERY wasteful way to use our water resources. We have been in a drought for many years now and it does not look like it is going to get better. Currently, the Colorado River does not reach the ocean in the Gulf of California.
You can also utilize gravel or granite in ways that are beautiful that match our desert climate and save on water cost and usage if artificial turf is not appealing to you.

There are plenty of native grasses in Arizona like Bouteloua, Hilaria Belangeri just to name a few. Our droughts here in AZ are cause by all of the rapid home growth and rock landscapes causing a radiant heat, replacing the original front and back yard grasses that we all grew up in the 80's and 90's. The grasses that we all grew up in helped maintain moisture, promoting cloud growth with humidity and evaporation. Gravel landscape is not a true desert landscape by any means, it retains heat well into the night creating these heat bubbles that affect our monsoons. this is why areas like phoenix have about a 10-degree difference in temp compared to a rural area outside of town sitting at a comparable elevation. This has caused a damaging effect to the north even up into Colorado where they are also now going into more and more droughts. Before we started to canal through Arizona, the water would flow freely across the soils naturally creating green areas along the bank of the river or wash. These green luscious banks protected the water allowing it to flow further preventing it from drying up. What I'm trying to say is there is a huge difference in our monsoon seasons now compared to 20 years ago when there were still grass in people's yards. the only thing that makes the two comparable (grass and monsoon) is they are almost both nonexistent, and that says a lot when you really think about it. This kind of thinking that you are promoting will not fix the problem of drought but will continue to speed up an even dryer southwest. If you're a native to Arizona you should know what I mean about our monsoons over the past few decades.

"Even if we got rid of all the lawns it probably wouldn't make a difference"....but we should all do our part. Makes perfect sense

Big props to you my friend. 👍 Not many if any tbh would be as selfless as you just proved you are with your video's message. It's your line of business and effects you directly yet you still dissuade your customers away from lawns. 👏

I hate Bermuda grass with a burning passion! I've been trying to get rid of it for years but it seems impossible. HOWEVER, I want some sort of living ground cover that i can walk on for many reasons including to help cool and add moisture in our hot dry air. Unfortunately, I'm not finding many options that can survive our summers. Looking into dwarf carpet of stars. Do you have any experience with this grass substitute, or know of any other good options that work in the Phoenix area?

I've watched a couple of your videos and decided to ask for some advice. I'm in Las Cruces, New Mexico; a fair distance away. I have a beautiful big Blue Agave (I think that's what it's named) that has several leaves that are bending backwards towards the ground. The Agave is a little more than five feet tall. I've very concerned about it and I am trying to figure out how to save it. I dug around the base looking for grubs and found none. I saw some holes in the leaves and sprayed them with a general insecticide. I haven't actually seen any bugs on it, just the holes. The leaves (fronds?) that are bending over have yellow coloring and cuts at the bend. Would it hurt the plant if I cut off the leaves that are bending over? They don't look like they would ever recover so I thought cutting off the leaves might redirect the plant's energy towards growth rather than trying to repair the leaves. I have lots of other agaves that I have transplanted from this one Agave so I want to make sure I can save this one if I can. Anything I learn about saving a struggling Agave will help me if others start to have problems. Thanks for any help.
