What a great sounding recording! Although I had been buying their records for several years, this was the year I was old enough to get the family car and go to this night, my first Dead show (I was 17). I convinced my friend Peter to go with me (“I don’t know man, I hear they play for 5 hours!”) and I threw in an extra buck for him so we could buy the expensive seats ($4.50 as I remember.) About 4 days earlier we had been to BCT to see Leon Russell. It was a good show, but the crowd wasn’t overly enthusiastic - Leon at one point chided people that, “y’all must be too tired from the revolution to boogie.” I wondered what the Dead show would be like. We had seats right in the middle, about ten rows from the stage. From the opening notes of Promised Land, everyone got on their feet and stayed on their feet, dancing and smiling the whole show. It was all new to me at that point: “Wow, China Cat jammed into I Know You Rider - who knew?!”; Dark Star got very weird in a much different way than the album version that I had long since memorized, then Jerry and Bob drifted offstage and I found myself listening to a jazz piano trio with Phil, Keith and Bill, which somehow ended up morphing into the country-western ballad, “El Paso” - I was totally hooked! They did indeed play for about 5 hours, and at the end my friend said he wished they had played even longer.

I was born exactly six months prior to this show, grew up in Montana and in June 1991 a friend and I drove 1,200 miles to see them play at Sandstone Amphitheater in Kansas City and then again in Denver a couple days later. A great adventure for a couple of 19 year old kids.

I was born in 1972, wish I could have seen them then at their absolute peak. Saw them for the first time at MSG at 16 in 1988 for 4 of the 8 show run. I guess I'm lucky to have seen them back then as well, I'm sure so many fans were not even born during Jerry's lifetime.

I went to the show the night before in San Jose and then the Friday night as a backstage guest of Owsley because he was at the Federal Halfway House I was assigned to work at as terms of my probation for refusing induction, Owsley on his way out of the joint. Picked him up at the Greyhound Station in Oakland and used to drive him around on errands. One day, I opened the front door and Phil was there to take Owsley out for the day. I couldn't have been more into the Dead at the time so it was a mindblower. It was a great run at BCT. The Friday night recently came out as Dave's Picks 24. And the show after that was the Sunshine Daydream show in Oregon. Heady times indeed! The Dead were firing on all cylinders in 1972.

Very sad announcement about pigpen after black throated wind. The song 'He's gone' would ultimately become their tribute to pigpen. They said he'd take six months off but unbeknownst to them he had already played his last show ever on June 17th of 1972. It's sad because the Europe 72 tour saw some of his best playing. He used his last ounces of energy and put it all out there on stage heart and soul. Unfortunately his heavy drinking took a large toll on his liver and health which made his situation worse because he already had liver problems unrelated to drinking. He may not have been aware of his other liver issues. . He played such a large part in the deads early successes and was a pivotal part of their sound up until 72. He had a great voice and could hold his own on the keys and organ. Although his contributions to live shows would begin to dwindle as his health deteriorated especially vocally. He continued to play keys with the addition of Keith godchaux for added keys support. He died march 8, 1973 of gastrointestinal hemorrhaging at 27 years young. R.I.P. Ron (pigpen) Mckernan.

I agree! Bobby is the luckiest man in rock & roll history. We are lucky his guitar wasn’t completely turned down like it was in most of the 70s. At best he’d be turned off by the third song of the 1st set. I don’t ever remember his guitar being audible in a 2nd set.

The playing, the singing, ceven Bobby saying thank you after every song, letting us know Me and my uncle is their only song in Emin. Yeah. Something is on here. 15 songs in the first set that really never ends as it keeps popping ul in the 2nd. Odd in that wat too. Okay just a fucking awesome translation of a show. Perfect show.

It is incredible to think only say 25 or 35 years ago you needed real musical talent to have hit records and stay relevant, there was no MTV; no silly movie videos of the so called Artists of Today with fake gold chains and funny headwear. You played in a bar - band, maybe one day you had a hit record, and just maybe ; if you worked hard enough, played well enough and could write really good songs and records - you were a small success. But you had to put in all the long hours and play live, do weird things at gigs and crazy fans and all the rest ( The dead played about 2,300 concerts all told ) - to even stand a remote chance. It was simply all about making the great music, the consistent gig - creating the right vibes and the loyalty fans. Yes, Deadheads ruled in their utter allegiance to The Greatful Dead sound - we all heard about the weird rumours at the famed live Concerts - the carpark outside itself even had its own claim to fame - of the powerful LSD sold in sheets of the 1000's, (WTF) the crazy after parties and so on. Another world ! But few has much actual contact with the inner workings of The Dead band engine and Garcia's REAL genius at NOT trying to have or even having a hit record ! " F the top 40 countdown hit parade , man ! " He surely would have exclaimed behind thick tinted glasses; Just Be Yourself ! And yet decades later now that you play the Dead still you feel their weird power pop - the electric guitar in the hands of a master and he was your co - pilot to the Stars ! And you WENT ! It is shame that popular music seemed to just be another side of " looking very pretty or sexy on TV " and has faded away so much with the demise of concerts and also Garcia's fate was not good - a troubled man ; he sought fake solace with the wrong crowd - as rock fame and famed addictions took its bitter and evil toll; stripping him away to a shadow of his former self To experience the excitement of such talented bands like say The Cars in 1981, Iron Maiden in 83 or even the Stones in the mid - 70's, and The Dead playing live in say 1969 was an experience you never could forget. Long live rock and roll ! The dead and the new born are awaking ! AND WHY are the bears dancing …… ??? Jerry - we salute you !

Right? Mugging for the cameras during a concert? Who does that? Well, these days, everybody. Play that music on the MTV... At least we hit the sweet spot, right? Beatles, Stones, Tull, Santana, Almanns, Joni, Janice... And it was all about the MUSIC. Concerts were cool because, as you point out, Michael, these cats could LAY IT DOWN. "Keep on rollin', my old buddy...."

The commercial right after Promised Land was acceptable. I stuck with it and He's Gone started. The commercial while He's gone was playing was unacceptable and I left.

What I 'like' (ON FACEBOOK) ? is simple fact... t hey shared what they did.? Had no idea (or wish) To get another? to 'make money'. They.... have enough. ? I can't help sharing .....nothing is gonna bring him back- excellent recording. How does facebook work... ? in 2020. A lot of women- ladies gone. Nothing wrong... w/getting old. Get used to it. > facebook did not exist when this guy died? (The one singing) Am Not Joking. I 'listen to words'. A one shot> deal. (A long game) > 'the other one' has to believe? .... love is a four letter word. 'reality is fun'. AAnd... recordings... are real. And every game ends. 'thanks for sharing- ... And- it does not end.
