I drove there from Mass. without a ticket. I tried walking around the War Memorial the afternoon of the show, but I was 1 of 100s of Heads looking for a ticket. It wasn't looking good. I came up with my most brilliant idea ever for finding a ticket. I drove my car out to the NY Thruway and parked beyond where cars were paying their toll at the exit closest to Rochester. I had a small sign that said 1 Ticket. 5 minutes later, a car pulled over and sold me a ticket at face value. This was still hours before the show, and it was a freezing cold day in Rochester. I remember standing on a bridge with the wind blowing at me and I thought Rochester was the coldest place on earth. Sure was nice to be inside later watching this show!

Oh the Brent years and the sound of the '85 fall tour. I was in 11th grade in '85 but didn't get into the Dead until college, first show in '90. Oh the 80s shows I could have attended, will always be a huge regret.

Those of us who started in the early '80s say the same thing about '70s shows, when they were at their musical best. The '80s were good, but after Touch of Grey, the crowds got way too big, the stadium shows, Jerry in and out of health/drug issues.

I was there..!! This was my 3rd show..19 yrs old.. me and some friends drove from NF Canada without tickets to Rochester on the 7th in hope of the "I need a miracle" thing..a few of my crew scored for the 1st night..I didn't..had to hang outside/in the car/in the cafes etc etc in the cold rain as my friends rocked out..Next day, whole new ball game..bumped into a chic who suddenly had to split town and voilà..ticket at face value for that evenings show..crazy the things we did when we were young..came totally ill prepared with only a bushel of apples in the trunk of the car to last us all for 2 days, a thin pair of socks in sneakers and couple of nickels scraped between the 4 of us..mind you, would do it all over again if I could..-)

Thanks to Mr. Smith, my 9th grade english teacher for filming this. Hope you are doing well. I'll never forget running into him at a local bar, asking him what he thought of the show, etc...and him telling me he filmed it (my jaw hits the floor).He said he'd dub us a copy. I told my buddy who was still in school to go look him up and he'd set us up, which he did. We must have made 100 copies of it for friends. So cool to see it here so many years later. We used to try and synch the sbd cassett tape on the stereo up to the VHS playing on the TV.

I remember these shows very, very well. We set out from Hartford CT by putting a half sheet of Gooney Birds in a bottle of Vodka. When we hit Albany we made Electric Screwdrivers and arrived in Rochester high as kites. Both shows were KILLER. 2nd set Touch>Sampson>High Time>Let It Grow! Amazing! We repeated the Electric Screwdriver routine for the second show the next night. Overall, the 2 best shows I ever saw that were back to back. The Gooney Birds were quite good too!
@newusernamehere4772
@newusernamehere4772 3 жыл бұрын
Wasn't the deal with Gooney Birds 1000 mics to every 4 hits? I never had any (I've heard the name), I've had that potency ONCE and was dumb enough to take 3 and a half which translated to about 24 hours of being blasted with fractals and the equivalent of what the Bible would call demonic possession followed by an exorcism a la the Chestbursters from Alien. As well as something like experiencing in first person the deaths of all my past lives. Locked myself in my apartment so didn't have to worry about anyone seeing lol, I'd like to do it again some day but I'd opt for the DMT or Salvia route to save time. (It obviously wouldn't be as intense bc of the shorter duration but that's kind of the point lol)

My 2nd show was 11-1-85 Richmond. I still remember theCold Rain and Snow, and the Bob and Jerry slide duet during Red Rooster. The guy next to me "Matt", mentioned that Jerry taught Bob how to play guitar, and he gave me my first taste of opium. Didn't get off, but I was already tripping on Musical Notes (?) and had been smoking pot and drinking beer all evening. I was 19.

I was starting my freshman year at Rochester Institute of Technology and when I enrolled there I checked the box that said it didn't matter if I was moved into the regular dorms or a fraternity..well I got moved into AEPi which was a DEADHEAD FRATERNITY!!! The whole house was into the Dead!! The problem was I was into Metallica and heavy metal!! In due time I was a Jerry fan and loving their music!! But that night the house was empty cuz the entire brotherhood was at the show!!! I unfortunately wasn't but with the help of guys like Voodoonola I can relive that moment in time!! That was honestly a moving time in my musical 'career'! The brothers at AEPi would have bands at the house like The Park Avenue band and another Dead cover band called Resurrection.. those bands would absolutely love coming to play at our frat!!! I would be amazed at some of the guys in the house saying they've been to 40-50 Dead shows!! being an 18 yr old metalhead I truly had no clue..I certainly know why now!! they would laugh at me when I said Kirk Hammett from Metallica was a better guitarist than Jerry!! haha I'm laughing at myself now!!

Was at this show too, and remember the same People's Express flight from Newark to get there that Robbie W mentioned. We stayed in Buffalo each night since my sister was going to school there, drove back and forth in a $12/day Rent-a-Wreck. This was a really solid, fun show as well as the next (previous?) night. Bobby had his rock-star on. He was cautious because he tended toward klutzy, so each foray to the stage edge was with a light tread. We were just praying for him to fall. A couple of times he stumbled (not at this show) while walking backwards and I thought he'd buy it, but he regained his footing if not his grace. Anyway it's a pretty solid show. Love the Estimated, you can see Garcia looking over at Brent like he would, and grooving and dancing. The prettiest song of the show is She Belongs to Me, slowed down to where you could hear every note of the solo, so melodic. Other One is good too.

The bus went by, and I got on in '83 at the Carrier Dome...and luckily it was well in time for catching this show. I truly believe the decade of the '80's with Brent were the best years of the Dead musically (and not just because I saw most of this decade), although let's face it; bad Dead shows are way better than most of what the music scene has offered us since 1995. Thanks so much for the upload.

This was my birthday show which occured 27 years ago today! I remember like it was yesterday - Bob, remarked at the opening "Tonight is a very special night because it's NOBODY'S BIRTHDAY" - apparently a reference to wishing others (bill walton, etc) a happy birthdy during the previous few shows of that tour.

+Wolf Sings Downhill after coma? There is no way I ever said that! AC Grateful Dead with Garcia as clean and healthy as he was going to get were on fire!!! 87 East coast spring tour, pure fucking smoke. East coast summer, Dylan, smoke. East coast fall, smoke. And then the Garcia Bands NYC Lunt - Fontanne shows??? I only say East coast because I was at those shows, there is no fucking way I ever said "downhill after the coma." The downhill roll didn't start until AFTER Brent checked out. That's how I saw and heard it anyway. Things got better when Brent climbed on board and kept getting better until he checked out

Loved this show, especially Satisfaction - almost didn't make it, couldn't find a hotel/motel after driving from Toronto.

These were the two shows I always regretted missing. I had the bootleg cassette of theses two shows about 1 week after they happened and played them in my Toyota Celica Supra until they wouldn't play no more. I did see both shows in Richmond VA on this tour, about a week before, so, we can't have it all ! Dare I say, Fall 85 tour is second best to Fall 89 tour?

Great show. Had this tape since the show in 85.. Only bad part is it's missing the Might as Well after Jack Straw to end the first set. Awesome footage though. How people could ever record some of these whole shows on video still amazes me. The Satisfaction is sick. Love it!!

I watch a lot of these old shows that Voodoo puts up in their entirety. I will admit I often skip the Drums/space jams in a lot I f the shows not that I don't like it they just are long and I prefer th he songs with lyrics. I reminds me a little bit of how Tool Used To Do Triad At Every Show during the Laterals era, but they would have a guest drummer from the opening band which made it more interesting plus I love the song. I am 37 now and never got a chance to see the Dead or any of the post Jerry bands, but I do plan on catching the Dead and company show this summer when they come to NC. I missed them in Greensboro last year. I love seeing/hearing them w Mayer. He is a great fit imo on most of the sings he plays on though sometimes I wish they had added another vocalist who can do the Jerry parts of songs. Anyhow I think it is the coolest thing that there is so much video footage that has been preserved and now presented by Voodoo and I think y you and the other fans/taper for making this a reality. I had listened to my 8 or s ok Dick's pics cds in the last 19 yrs, but never really got hooked to their music til about a yr and a half ago. I love all eras, but I am really loving everything from the 80s and a lot of the nineties shows, but I esp love what Brent brings to the band. Love his voice. Sorry for the long post, but I love reading the post by you other fans expressing your memories of attending these shows and your continued love of the band.

My first show. Was at school in batavia when we decided to check it out maybe get high. When we got there my friend said her uncle worked at the war memorial and he could get us in. It was sold out and we went to the door she talked to the guy. Do you know my uncle? hes said yes. is he working we want to come in. no hes not but i'll let you in 10 dollars each so we start digging in our pockets. the heads in front see whats going on and start booing. this guy realizes hes going to have a situation so he pushes us in. we didnt have to pay my first show. Thanks!

Fantastic show. age 17 flew People's express from Newark for like $29 each way. Got tickets at Jacks Music in Red Bank after he intially told us couldn't sell out of state tickets. He caught us out on street and had a change of heart. That was # 1 magic of this show. Met couple on flight from Boston who me drinks on flight :). These general admission shows were so energized. Landed Brent side couple rows off floor close to stage. Still blown away from energy of this show. Blues for Allah back drop during Satisfaction. People always thought I was just tripping when I told the story, well this video is proof! 2:01:40.. Hit airport after show only told by Police go find a hotel, well 30 heads later they let us sleep on carpet in closed airport! GREAT TIMES!!!!

Man is it great to see the whole show. Put it up on your big screen, surround sound and you're at the show❣👏👏👏 It still is funny, as the East Coast shows were roaring 1985 and up, that Massachusetts almost didn't allow THE GRATEFUL DEAD to perform there and JERRY GARCIA was not allowed in the State of New Jersey - and the MEADOWLAND shows were always kickin'. The best band playing THE GRATEFUL DEAD now is, JOE RUSSO'S ALMOST DEAD, in my not so humble opinion.
