I love the way the music flows from one instrument to another.

The mixes from the 73 and 74 shows are all pretty much like this - the shows was a great combo of the Americana tunes like this (and El Paso, Jack Straw, etc) and hardcore jazz with jams and solos in songs like Playin in the Band. Definitely worth making the deep dive. There are some real standouts in 73 and 74 - 11.17.73 has a Playin-uncle john’s-morning dew-uncle johns-playing which you probably really enjoy reacting to - as well as 2.15.73 with a Phil solo and then a Phil and Jerry duet between Dark Star and Eyes of the World.

If MVP is based on any reasonable statistics, I think we have a winner Laissez les bons temps rouler well kinda apropos, but I was trying to leave this on the fever page for Caitlin.

9-10-74 is one of my favorite shows, arguably the best Dark Star>Morning Dew they ever did

This is a song that Bob stopped playing in '74 because he wasn't totally satisfied with all of the lyrics. He brought it back in the 90's with new lyrics only to quickly revert to the original. The song has great potential for a send-up jam at the end. The 90's versions hint at where it can go. JRAD really does an incendiary version that's worth checking out. Interesting thought about the Stones doing it. I can hear it. It would be in the honkytonk country blues vein like Girl with the Far Away Eyes or Memory Motel. Keep'em coming!

A hugely underrated Dead tune. A couple of Bobby/Barlow masterpieces get lost in the flood of Garcia/Hunter genius.

A little like the George Harrison songs in Lennon/McCartney land.

Don’t believe Jerry ever played steel for the Dead. Maybe once? But New Riders opened for them often in 70 and 71 and he was usually on pedal steel for them

This song was only performed for a couple of years and replaced by “looks like Rain” as a weir ballad if I’m not mistaken. Jerry’s subtle and nimble emulation of a pedal steel. Sounds like an odd time signature too. Are there better versions? Yeah probably but I think this song never really gelled live and maybe why they dropped it. Thanks.

A few Bobby tunes start off just riding that E before dropping into a song, all the while keeping us all in suspense.........BTW, LL Rain, Jack Straw
