I feel kinda sad hearing your review but I understand everyone has their own particular tastes in music. And I'm not a musician (other than being in choirs when I was young and playing a little piano and guitar.) I love many types of music but adore few musicians. I adore Blood Orange. I think of him as kind of a Neo-Soul Jazz with a hint of Indie

Great pick. I think it’s great how you pick up on things like Beatles riffs poping in and out. Whether intentional or not they make you hear things that you recognize or want to hear in the music. I can really hear how “I Know You Rider” could flow out of this. Did they mean to do that or is it a story my brain is making up about what I want to hear? All part of the fun of listening to a show and trying to guess what might be next. That’s part of what makes them The Grateful Dead

Love HCS! Another song that should have never left the rotation! Great review and great version of HCS. I love how you pick up on the multiple different melodies simultaneously but yet is so harmonious. Agreed on the Beatles, the first I heard it I asked myself if this was a Beatles cover.

Somewhere, John Mayer specifically references this jam as an example of Jerry's genius. He says, plenty of players could play the transcribed notes but it would sound chaotic and disjointed. Jerry was all about flow. Other guitarists may have better technique. Jerry's genius was the choices he made. As for the Beatles influence. Garcia acknowledged it. It comes through more on the studio version. There is also a reggae influence on the rhythm. The dead were pretty subtle in their thievery!

Mickey left in February '71 and returned for one show in '74 just before the band went on hiatus. When they started back in '76 Mickey was fully reinstated. So obviously only Bill for this show.

You talk about doing a series on the interpolations between songs, and you've picked the perfect one to start with. They mostly went into Fire On the Mountain out of Scarlet Begonias, but not always. The night I became a Deadhead, 10/28/85, they opened the second set with Scarlet Begonias>Touch Of Grey. And I know they've done other songs out of Scarlet too, so it's perfect.

Great minds, I guess! Have been playing with this type of thing for Spring 2025 - maybe some revisiting of performances I did at the very beginning of this journey, and taking common pairings and seeing what happens when they are paired with something else. I’ll definitely take the 10/28/85 under advisement :-)
@JB-Deadskins5 күн бұрын
@mirrormusic99 what I mean is that with Scarlet Begonias you have a standard starting point and can study the difference in interpolations to the different following songs.

I love the things you pick up on that I’ve never thought of, like, Steal your face and long strange trip in the same sequence. Great review and amazing sequence the MLB jam into Truckin is just absolutely filthy. For me the distinction between songs is the opening chords of the next song. If it’s a long jam to get there then it’s either the previous song there or just a “jam” between songs. Enjoyed this!

@michaelbettonville50857 күн бұрын
Mind Left Body jam references a similar motif from Baron Von Tollbooth and the Chrome Nun. The Truckin' jam is a nod to Nobody's Fault but Mine which they did off and on through the years. This show definitely lives up to the billing.

MLB Jam is the descending chord progression starting at 40:55 to about 46:00 of your video. They played it in some dark stars and other jam, eventually Bob wrote it into the chorus of the Music Never Stops. The beginning of he’s gone is similar to ramble on rose and they’re both on Europe ‘72. 1971-1974 was no Mickey. Agree that from he’s gone and on wasn’t their best playing

When Jerry breaks into his interpretation of Robert's heartbreaking lyrics for Stella blue, it tears my heart into shreds. The incredible depth of emotion he puts into the life of the loser,who has given his whole life willingly to his art and the ability to make an audience become one with the music and the musician. If you can find that magic moment... it's all worthwhile and your heart is healed kn the moment, even if it falls back into reality when the song ends.

I have always loved He's Gone. Such a dis song,but it is what it is . He stole all our money, ( mickeys dad) yet the answer is not to hate , just to accept that it was on him only, and we need to let it go in order to be ourselves. Nothing left to do but smile! I hate that Micky felt he had to leave the band, and was so happy when they reconciled in 74, if I remember from last week's mis post.

How do we know? We don't. Did they know what and when? Sort of. They were striving for the now, at least that was what Jerry said. He said that it didn't work sometimes, and they had to learn how to be "more professional, so that they could deliver a good show every night. Giving up a bit of the magic that occurred every second or third show, allowed them to establish a baseline performance that would please the fans on any given night. I am not entirely sure what he meant, as far as clipping the highs,but I did notice that they developed a baseline level that they could perform to. I'm rambling again, so... merry Christmas!

Ya know!!!....i think it was 12/12-15th he showed up with 200lbs of the translucent rainbow fishcake flake!!....hey they had a huge crew!! & they'd need to get more creative then ever to hide their supplies!!! Really love these reaction videos man. Hope you and your family have a great holiday season. Was trying to think of random songs i dont think you have reviewed yet.. maybe do one of My Brother Essau? Its a 80s era song that is typically only like 5 mins or so not super far out but has some interesting lyrics and one of bobbys best one liners "shadowboxing the apocolypse.. and wondering the land". Just an idea!! Keep the videos coming!

You’re r reactions, evolution, and appreciation have been great! What you’re experiencing reflects people’s reaction when attending shows. Imagine being at these shows not knowing what to expect or expecting something to happen that wouldn’t. If this was your first show, first exposure to the Grateful Dead, or your first Playing in the Band, depending on a lot of factors, your reaction would be different. The second, third, or fourth… Everyone got something personal from every song, set, show, solo, or “movement” (as you nicely described). Keep enjoying and sharing!

You have reached the part of your Dead journey where one asks the question, What went wrong ? You can hear the struggle and it’s interesting that they could be playing that well and still not pull it together. There are places where it does gel and those parts sound fantastic which makes it even more curious. I think their music as a band was a rather delicate thing. I can see why Jerry started the Garcia band. Thanks I really enjoyed this one.
