Jerry was a happy camper at this show. What a year he had, touring the country with Dylan, A top ten pop chart hit, 10 magical nights on Broadway, attendees on NYE that year included Joe Montana, Larry Bird, Kevin McHale and Bill Walton. Joe was in uniform throwing footballs off a float of the Golden Gate Bridge next to Bill Graham dressed as father time. The Celtics were dressed in plain clothes, I remember Larry Bird was wearing a suit. They had a net on stage and everything. It was quite a scene man.

This was early in 1987. The regular NYE show for 12-31-86 (one month earlier) was at the coliseum (Oakland) and the following NYE show (12-31-87) was at the Kaiser. This was the Deads last SF Civic center run ever. What you're describing sounds like a western new years show. This was Chinese New year. I could be wrong about it though. I didn't usually spend a lot of time watching the stage so all kind of things could've happened without me being aware of it.

My First Grateful Dead Show. I never “got it” with Grateful Dead before that, but I went with a friend who was into it. We got separated out front. The whole outdoor scene was amazing. I bought an 8th of mushrooms outside, not knowing what to expect. I ate the whole 8th before going in. What a surprise…!!! I Got It

2nd cali show ever. Night 1 (get back) was the first. So high, So happy. one of my all time favorite shows. Never heard anything but a crappy tape before. SF civic aud was tiny. That and roanoke va were the smallest indoor venues i can recall attending. Thanx for the great uploads. Get to relive memories. RIP Asher Montandon who i visited to see the shows with. Walked out and saw a 6-6 black transvestite who said "welcome to sanfrancisico" TRIPPING my face off

I had tix to all 3 nights of this run, but gave this night's to an associate who had never seen a show. Felt some regret when I found out I had missed (what could have been my first) Terrapin (and LLR). SO pleased to find this great VID! Thanks to our camera-sneaker-iner!! Poor Bobby is a wreck. Love Jerry's arm wave at 31:13! RIP Brent and Uncle Bill.

This was the first night I ever tried liquid. At the time one of my favorite shows...but in hindsight it is rough....really rough...still great times... Bill Graham held a volley ball contest before the shows where the winning team got tickets to Mardi Gras... the teams were divided by regions... and the dragon during drums...

I got a boot of this show handed down to me from my brother in law in '96 when I was Penn State. The Scarlet and Terrapin were both among my favs all time, and then I lent out the show... and poof---it was gone!!! Twenty years later I'm finally hearing it again. For some reason the sound of the drummers is super punchy on this show, you can really hear how pronounced it is during the BarnBurner of a Scarlet! This was one of the shows I used to "convert" people back in school lol. The Terrapin is superb and haunting, also a top 5 for me. Enjoy, Jerry and Co. were feelin' it this night! By the way, what kind of soul-dead human could listen to this and come up with a thumbs down?

This was my very first show. Junior in High School in LA - my buddy and I skipped at lunch and drove up, arrived when it was dark and had no idea there was an insane scene going on since we pretty much ran straight in. The band blew my mind. It is the most profound moment in my life and resulted in my following the boys right up through 95. 250 plus GD a d Jerry show. The most important people in my life have come in/out of this incredible journey. I am still “searching for the sound” today, loving what Phil and Dead & Co and the many incarnations have come along. Passing along my passion to my son and while my crew has also changed, past and present Party Hats are my second family. I stumbled upon this, played it loud and it brought me right back - tears in my eyes. Thank you to whomever was able to pull this off (must have been on a tripod?). The sound is synched perfectly and is awesome.

Mickey at 3:15 "I think we should leave and come back when the boy wonder is ready". They were endlessly f--ing with Bobby. And I know it could never be proven, but I think the crew would mess with his guitar/rig before taking the stage, hence all the delay before first song. It happened more often than not.

Archive considers this a horrible show. Granted Bob sounds drunk or high and I read that his dog Otis died that day. But I think the non Bob songs this night sound amazing. People say that Jerry doesn't seem that inspired but i think his playing is on fire. He definitely carries Bob through out this partially painful and partially inspired concert.

My 3rd Show. I attended all three Chinese New Year shows. My first show was one of the first of the three shows at the Coliseum after Jerry's diabetic coma and relearning to play guitar. I decided to finally go see Jerry and the Dead, something I'd always meant to do, before He was gone. I sure was glad to finally be home. Instant Deadhead. Just add Grateful Dead music and stir. I went to grade school in Novato Ca. Pacheco Elementary in Rafael Village right across from Hamilton Air Force Base. I was 8 years old. I used to see the Dead here and there back then. They were "cool looking hippies". We liked the long haired people. They smiled at you and would give You the peace sign or wave back at You if You flashed one at them. Unlike the H.A.'s who were just as likely to flip You off, as wave back at You as they roared by on their scooters. They were scary but also cool. Us kids thought Hippies were the "grooviest"!! I first encountered the Dead in 1967 at a local Alpha Beta supermarket. Bobby offered me a just come out that very day Hostess raspberry jelly filled doughnut. My next encounter was at the hidden jewel... Bolinas beach (Bo-Bo, Dogtown) that same year. Jerry Garcia. When I saw what was probably his self portrait carved into the moist, grey clay soil. I don't know why I did it and still regret it to this day, but I took a stick a poked at it and busted the nose off. Jerry came up with a crushed look on His face and asked in a gentle voice, "why'd You do that Kid?" I shrugged my shoulders, turned around to run and ran smack-a-dab into my Dad. My Dad had seen what I did and was angry. He did not really like hippies or long hairs, but He was sad and mad at what I had done to an obvious wonderfulwork of art that while not being eternal, and would be eventually washed away by the surf. I think I had then and probably still have Aspergers Syndrome, PTSD, ADHD and Bi-polarity. I was always commiting inappropriate errors and I would always say "I don't know", when asked why I did something. Jerry's sad face turned to a smile as I apologized, "I'm sorry Mister". My Dad told me to apologize and was holding me firmly by the shoulders as I did so. His almost painful grip eased as Jerry said "that's okay kid, I can make another one", and He reached over and tousled my hair. He then set to work carving another face. His forgiving attitude and my unabashed apology had probably saved me from yet another spanking (my poor Dad tended to spank alot back then and I'm sure it was because that's what He had modeled to Him when He was just small). Instead my Dad hoisted me up, gently admonished me while giving me a great big hug and put me up on his shoulders. I couldn't get into too much trouble up there. Jerry was over at the clay wall beaming at us. I didn't know who He was or who the Grateful Dead were at that age, but later on in life... I was Gabberflasted when I realized Who those Hairy strangers were. I read Ken Kesey's and the Merry Prankster's story "The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test ", written by the Author, Tom Wolfe ( my mother , my two sister's and I were even present at a hippie Christian Church daycare outing at a Beach in Point Reyes that is in the book) in the eighth grade as well as "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest", and "Sometimes A Great Notion" on my own. I read them all again in my High School English during my Freshmen year. I guess I was a Dead Head way before I even knew it. I wanted to go see the Dead in High School but didn't have a car and my friend's all told me that the Grateful Dead was just about a buncha lame country music and didn't want to go. The point being... I should've been going to see the Dead by at least 1977,78,79 or so. Instead it took me till 1987. Oh well... Better Nate than Lever. So it was pretty exciting in January of 87 to be seeing my second show and first of a three day run. I stayed in my Van in the parking lot under the plaza and wasn't kicked out because I was all by myself. The security guards knew I was there but left me alone because I was not causing a ruckus. It was so Kool. I saw what got the Dead banned from that venue. A perpetually dancing Deadhead stumbled and fell into a picket fence around Diane Feinstien's prize rose garden and later that night homeless people who were probably not Dead head's finished tearing the fence down for a fire. They also pooped in the garden. *Sigh*

So what a Grate Show. After my first show in December at the Coliseum I couldn't wait to see them again. And I was not disappointed. So Kool. I'm going to take a shower and then go walk my doggies TisSaAck and Winnie while I start listening. I just recently started listening to Dead Shows on KZbin and am feeling some of that same fresh exciting wonder I felt back in 86, 87!! It's like being home Again, Again!!!

The night before was a deep, dark and dirty show... I was one of the last old-school 80's novices right before 'In the Dark' came out... The 28th was my first show and really my first Rock Concert if you don't include Beatlemania in '78... Any ways, I was a sophomore at UC Santa Cruz at the time and I had a crew cut and played on the Rugby team and knew nothing of the murky world of the 1980's San Francisco Dead... At that point they were like a cult.. I remember sitting in the Balcony with dirty-looking bikers and their women surrounding me- a babe in the woods... Having ingested too much Boomers, they came out and played Shakedown Street and giant waves started flowing through my body as the stage fell away leaving only Jerry- a black shirt in white light- alternating, in my confused and convulsed mind, being God and Satan! "Get Back' followed- hey, a song I know! Only problem was it wasn't the exact Beatles version, it was twisted and strange... 'Walking Blues' came on, a real gut-grinder, and I was up and moving, asking people how to get Out of There. Eventually I found my way to the entrance and out into the bitterly cold 29 degree night-sitting next to a bag lady with a transistor radio... The song it was playing was "I can see clearly Now..." Ah, bittersweet vindication! All the more perplexing was that I grew up next to a hippy commune in the Santa Cruz Mountains where people swam a naked, my dad grew pot which I sold in high school, but I had never witnessed anything like the organized iniquity I experienced there...

Yeah, Weir was a mess. The local lore at the time had a couple of variations, but the scuttlebutt I’d heard was (pick one, or any combination) - Bob had broken his collarbone mountain biking (true, somewhere there was a charity auction for his X-rays), and he’d become addicted to the painkiller pills and was slurring and heavy-tongued as a result. Not to mention, forgetful. I mean, “El Paso” is painful! - OR… - Bob was fresh out of rehab and tranq’d to deal with the anxiety. Whatever. We’ve all had bad nights at work, but how many of us have those crap days recorded for history! Woof! Weir, let’s let Brent sing one, eh? Or, Mickey, or… Wavey Gravy! Jesus. That “El Paso” is playing in my ears right now. It was even more uncomfortable than I remember! Is it Garcia who chimes in with “Bravo!” when the song somehow mercifully ends? Or was it Weir? My money’s on Mickey. Seems about his sense of humor.

Haha. Anybody ever hear of masonry waterseaer? I was working on my camper bathroom trying to water proof it to hang up tapestries instead of tile or a surround. Anyway, that shit be brutal. Once you get to taking with an open jar it's good night nervous system and shit goes slow mo sideways. Fuck your up solid a whole day and night. AND weir got drunk.

Worst version of El Paso I've ever heard. It's comically bad 😂

this show is weak. Theres no inspiration. Just the individual pick attack of garcia transmits the lack of energy delivered in each present moment. Baby Blue is sooo slow and weak ... raps it up okay i suppose. 87 had some great shows though ... check out Worcester shows !

Nice show. Gotta be the worst version of El Paso ever played. Just plain awful.
