This might sound crazy but the first time I really "heard" this song was after my son died at the age of 33. I turned him on to all kinds of music. He played the guitar, wrote songs and was awesome! I followed the Dead but this song has a completely different meaning now! It was just 2 years ago that I lost my boy! I her it all the time now and think he is sending a message to me.... I love you Mike'y!

I was one of the many fortunate ones to meet Jerry and the boys back in 1990 at Chinese New Years with my friend who made a giant red dancing bear costume. The promoters asked if we could come back stage to show Jerry and the band plus their kids the costume. This was one of Wavey Gravy's idea, he loved it. We even made Bear bucks for each venue. We will always carry a part of Jerry in our hearts and souls. Thank you Bob and Phil for keeping the flame alive with FURTHER. Thank you,

Wonderful the meanings their songs can have. For me this song is about Mickey Hart's dad, but when I was helping to care for my dad with cancer I knew exactly what Phil was saying with 'Box of Rain'. Yet 25 years earlier my wife to be and I first told each other "I love you" slow dancing to 'Box' in my living room. When we divorced, 'Ship of Fools' was my soundtrack, even though that song was originally inspired by problems arising from the Shakedown Street peddlers. The Dead is life.

This song may be about something completely different, but music speaks to people in different ways. For me this song represents the ever-growing void between society and myself.
@gratefulkm Жыл бұрын
There can be disagreement , If there is a void perhaps you have not grasped the point of argument which can leave people fighting over the incorrect parameters Which is very frustrating I myself struggle everyday with people that believe Cain killed Able(without understanding the story in any real way , because they are not taught the story correctly) But I enjoy telling people that Able is alive and well, and that Cain never ever actually killed Able Which confuses them, The best bit is when I explain that the story is about Brain Anatomy and how that affects Consoiuness So why do they want half thier brain to be Dead I ask ? Great fun and it fills the void

People come and go throughout our lives, some leave pain some leave joy and others equal parts of both. Mickeys' father, Lenny Hart as a manager, did the band dirty and made off with over $100k. Sad but true, now try to imagine the Dead without Mickey..? This is not to take anything away from the Originator... Mr. Bill Kreutzmann, he is the Deads founding drummer and cherished musician by all of us Dead fans. Mickey in his own right has carved out a legacy to be honored. When I think of the Dead music that first enthralled me LIVE I cant separate the two drummers, the power and foundation that they together provided was essential to the bands unique and fantastic sound.

This song isn't about Pigpen, they sang it on the Europe 72 tour when Pig was still in the band. Its about Lenny Hart, Mickey's dad and the bands ex-manager who stole aproximately 100,000 dollars from the band. Which back in 71 was equal to exactly one fuck-ton. That's why Mickey quit from '71 to '75.
