Europe 72 sounds so good because the album is probably about 80% studio recording. All the vocals, many of the guitar solos, entire piano parts for several tunes, all the backing vocals… on and on. So many “studio fixes” that’s it’s not really much of a live album at all.

This demonstrates the ability this band had to go from a whisper to a ROAR. There were many transcendent moments of musical melange for the adventuresome and persistent patrons of America's finest Rock n Roll Blues Country Folk Jam Band. The moments of magic were worth the trip from anywhere. As Sunshines bumper stickers said it so perfectly. THERE IS NOTHING LIKE A GRATEFUL DEAD CONCERT. Between 1973 and 1995 I managed to catch over 450 Dead shows and 75+ Jerry shows and yes even Kingfish. I went pro in 82. I couldn't find anything better to do..

Jerry could crawl inside a melody like no one's business and make you feel it in your spine. He made the notes sing in ways only he could have dreamt up or conjured or whatever magic he was channeling at times. I play a bit and Ive studied Jerry since I was like 14. Ive heard 100 other people try and describe his special sauce - the loping lazy path back to the roots, the unexpected detours between scales, the spaces in between notes (the non-note). All the above and 1000 other reasons. I still dont think anyone really can understand why he lit so many of us up and continues to 26 years after he left us. And maybe thats exactly why its his special sauce

I recall listening to music never stopped at a show in the late 80s and it was really hot that summer, and it was the end of the first set and it was a Tuesday and when Bob was about to say the line “and the cool breeze didn’t come on Tuesday” it was great. Another show in Raleigh there was a huge bolt of lightning that came down the same second the first notes to Dark Star began to play. I can tell a dozen of these anecdotes but don’t wanna go on any longer. O one of my favorites was being stared at by Edie Brickell when her band opened for jerry and da boys. For a WHOLE song. I was in the 4 row on the floor though, in the middle. But I wish I woulda approached her somehow for at least an autograph. She was so gorgeous and talented and Bobby Weir was glued to her on the side stage, he wanted to get some of that!

I know I’m late to this party but that’s my favorite thing about the dead. The beauty of their musicianship is that they truly listen to each other on stage. None of them are trying to play the loudest solo or steal the spotlight. They each have so much to offer and they all provide the space for each other to bring it to the table, creating such mind-blowing collectives of incredibly rich musical tapestries built on a foundation of deceptively simple structure. Some of their greatest performances come from songs entirely based around two or three chords, and it gives them all a LOT of room to really work with it and find their groove. “Fire on the Mountain” from this same show is a prime example. Just two chords, but the song is stretched to 15 minutes with an explosive ending. Absolute masters of their craft, each and every one of them.

Great choice Jamal. This was the period with Keith Godchaux on the keys. He was in the band from 1971-79. The 70s were prime Dead for me. Brent joined in 1979. You also need to dive into the period with Ron "Pigpen" McKernan. He was in the band from 1965-72. He sadly passed away in 1973 at age 27.

Great suggestion. The Hard to Handle from the Yale Bowl (07/31/71), available on Complete Road Trips, is one of the great Dead performances. Pigeon rips it up on vocals and Garcia's solo towards the end is one of my favourite solos of all time. Awesome stuff.

Always enjoyed likening this song to the day after the show, literally walking around in morning dew after camping, coming down (or not) the next morning. Remembering everything that was experienced the night before, expanded things seen and heard, the show, and coming back into orbit. After all the craziness, and trying to make sense of it all...it doesn’t matter anyway. ❤️
