This gives me an idea for another reaction series of teases. Like on 3/31/91 during the PITB jam, Jerry teased Dark Star, but ultimately they went into drumz without the PITB reprise. The next night, April Fools, they played the first verse of Dark Star>drumz>space>2nd verse of Dark Star>PITB reprise

I've heard tell of these kinds of things, where they start a jam/series one night and pull it back the next night. I'll have to investigate further.

Yes, that's Bobby singing El Paso. Jerry joins in the choruses

I recorded this in June or July, I think -- and one of my favorite parts about watching it back is that I now (in December) know the answers already to many of the questions I asked in the summer. I can literally see/hear the progress!

Jerry plays the Dark Star melody, which is why they are calling it a Dark Star jam, but the beginning definitely had some Wharf Rat in it. Edit: that's my Deadhead ear. Although I heard some Dark Star lines, mostly I was hearing Wharf Rat. And, of course, they did go into Wharf Rat, not Dark Star, so maybe it should be labeled Wharf Rat Jam 😅 2nd Edit: this gives me an idea for another reaction series of teases. Charlie’s files are always a good choice, he’s in our FB group. WOW! Just WOW! I’ll leave my reaction to that. For the DS jam, it’s very subtle, I can hear the melody (hopefully that’s the correct word, I have no technical music knowledge) of the DS. There are few things better in music than the Dead dropping back into the PITB melody after a spacey jam. Thx again for these reviews!

Siiiiiiick versions, Keith is killing it. Half-steps after 1974 tend to be "bigger", one of the best is from 9/3/77. The Dark Star part of the piece is really just a few minutes of the main chord progression and overall vibe, on the official Road Trips release it doesn't list Dark Star jam as a track. Dark Star also has similarities with the intro of Wharf Rat so you can also say it's a long intro into Wharf Rat. If you remember you listened to Dark Star -> Wharf Rat -> Dark Star from 2/18//71. But also, we don't necessarily have to label jams as anything other than just that. You should totally do a Dark Star series but from different tours/years. At 22:12 of your video you can hear Bobby start El Paso before anyone else joins in, Bob is singing it with Jerry on backup. Jerry really makes you tear up with those licks when the character gets shot. The "nuclear jam" is often called the "tiger jam" that appears in Dark Star, playing in the band, and the Other One jams.

Just wanted to stop by and say thanks for continuing my education. One of the reasons I keep doing these videos (rather than just listening to the Dead without the camera rolling) is how welcoming the community has been, and how much y'all really want to help me understand. I do appreciate it.

It’s really a toss up for me as to whether this or 11/17 is my favorite Playin sequence. I think it comes down to which one I’ve listened to most recently, so currently 11/21 is on top. I wore out both tapes long ago 😂

I re-listened alongside the video (alongside June Me lol), and man. The jazz in Denver is just out of this world, and the jaw-dropping immediate transition bw PITB and El Paso is both hilarious and incredible.

Not sure if this is on your list (or already recorded), but you need to hear 5/19/74 Truckin>Jam>Mind Left Body Jam > NFA>GDTRFB. Totally different feeling but just as incredible.

How long are you doing this playin' series? Any reason for sticking to 73 only?

There are 4 more after this one. It was an audience request to do this particular series of consecutive shows/PITB performances to show how the song morphed over the course of about 3 weeks in real time in 1973. Hope you’re enjoying.

Because fall ‘73 is one the greatest tours ever performed by any band ever.

I totally agree about '73 and didn't realize PITB changed that quickly. Doesn't sound that different from later years to me, notwithstanding the tightness and energy of the band (especially in the jams) at this point in time. Now I'm gonna have to go back and listen to them all over again. 🤷

I personally wouldnt have called that jam Dark Star and would have just called it Wharf Rat right away. But Dark Star and Wharf Rat are very similar in the key and stuff. This is a pretty wild one for sure lol

Thanks! I would like to buy you a better backdrop. This is much better than the clothes, but it's still bulgey. If a 6' curtain rod and something you can find at Wal-Mart don't brighten it up. Well at least i tried

Everything I've tried to type in response so far has seemed insufficient... but I am very grateful for this! The "studio"/closet space is a weird shape, but I will do my best with the backdrop modifications. Thanks as always for your support and kind words. Hope you keep watching as the channel grows!
