Jimi Hendrix may have totally revolutionized his guitar in a way that nobody else ever managed but he wasn't touched by the hand of god in the way that Jerry was. Nobody has even been more purely music than Garcia. Emotion just poured out of him through the guitar and he could effortlessly create blissful music for three hours a night and then do it all again the next night. He could launch his band into space, rock his audience into a frenzy, move an auditorium to tears and send everyone away with a massive smile on their face, all with the power of his six strings and the incredibly talented men (and one woman) who shared the stage with him.

When Jerry died in 1995 this is what Bob Dylan said about him: "There's no way to measure his greatness or magnitude as a person or as a player. I don't think eulogizing will do him justice. He was that great - much more than a superb musician with an uncanny ear and dexterity. He is the very spirit personified of whatever is muddy river country at its core and screams up into the spheres. He really had no equal. "To me he wasn't only a musician and friend, he was more like a big brother who taught and showed me more than he'll ever know. There are a lot of spaces and advances between the Carter family, Buddy Holly and, say, Ornette Coleman, a lot of universes, but he filled them all without being a member of any school. His playing was moody, awesome, sophisticated, hypnotic and subtle. There's no way to convey the loss. It just digs down really deep."

Hey Craig, glad you got around to this, been looking forward to this reaction all week. Yeah, this is definitely a HEADY Playin' in the Band. The jam is just insane, Phil up front with Jerry and Billy locked in the whole time. I totally get the sensory overload. It's just non stop intensity. So glad you enjoyed it, brother! Rock on!

The idea of the Grateful Dead was that every instrument was created equally in terms of volume. Everyone was heard on the same level no one was in the "background "

One thing that I appreciate about them is that they allowed their shows to be recorded and many they recorded themselves. There is literally thousands of hours of music out there. As it was all in the moment and played off the cuff there are no two versions of any song that are the same. Admittedly that approach to performance means that sometimes it was a shit show, but when it clicked it was magic. There are some real gems out there.

12:34 - Even though Jerry *is* floating some terrific solos between 8-ish minutes and this point, what you're really keying-in on is how the rhythm section of Bobby, Phil, and Bill are driving this song. By this point (1972), Phil is playing a *lot* more lead lines, and Bobby is already well-versed in a guitar technique called voice leading. Also by this time Keith Godchaux was fully integrated into the band, and Keith's jazz background really gave Bob Weir a whole lot more room to step out of the traditional rhythm guitarist role and provide a far more experimental palate from which Jerry could paint. The difference between Grateful Dead 1970 and Grateful Dead 1972, as you hear here, is all based upon this fact - it wasn't that they had just become better at playing or added depth to their individual playing. Rather, it was the fact that adding Keith, along with Phil playing a lot more lead bass lines, *and* Bobby adopting a completely different style allowed the band to take things to a completely different level. Being a lead guitarist is a funny thing like this: one can only work with the palate provided by the rhythm section. In the early days of this band, there was a heavy reliance upon building momentum and intensity in a song by playing faster or harder. Here, you see something completely different: where musical *technique* drives the song - not changes in tempo or repetition or the intensity with which the music is played...and this is all due to changing the compositon of the band, such that each individual could step out of a traditional role and had room to do something just a little bit different.

Craig, I've gotta say, you are getting much better at picking up on Jerry and The Boys, and Girl, don't forget Donna Jean, and their little detours. I think the reason Dave picked this version was for Phil's Bass, and some SERIOUS jammin'. Jerry is the lead, almost always, Bob was a rhythm guitarist, who also does some slide work. Also Jerry is playing his "WOLF" guitar at the time, and it does have a slightly different tone than the "TIGER" guitar he played later. I think it gave me a Broken Skull. LOL. THANK YOU for doing this one. Oh yeah, yeaaah, yeaaaaah!

BRO!!! Who put this dude on the deepest cut of playing?! This is the best explosive psychedelic jazz jam ever made by a band. This is the last version of this song I expected. But here we the fuck are… congrats bro every other version of this song is lesser than this one in terms of energy. Homie!! You have a good friend that knows they’re dead and they gave you the best. Cheers

Bobby wrote more of the rockers Jerry more of the melodic sweet, ballad type. If you look at set lists they usually took turns with songs. Donna came with Keith so if Donnas there Keith is on piano/keyboards.

Any PITB from 04/07/72 thru 10/20/74 is gold. Maybe not “better” but on an equal plane, yet individually(or sandwiched), have their own identity. After the hiatus, they didn’t quite capture the frantic energy. There are still great, great readings, but a tad mellower, a little more laid back ever evolving, for good or ill. Just my humble opinion. And yes, I would love for you to react to another one.

Mickey left the band in 1970 when his father, who was the band's manager, stole somewhere around $70,000 from the band and signed them to an extension to their contract with Warner Brothers without the band's knowledge. He returned when the band came off their brief hiatus in 1975.

I saw a couple of shows where they would start this song near the beginning of the second set and continuously jam into 3 or 4 other songs and come back with Donna's second scream an hour and a half later to end the show. Lots of fun. Jerry's guitar sounds different here because he is doing some serious work with the wah-wah pedal which he almost always used for this song. Of course, Jerry being Jerry, he'd use it in ways that nobody else ever did. It was always electrifying. That was typical of Jerry. When he got really interested in playing pedal steel guitar in the late 60's, he co-founded a country group called New Riders of the Purple Sage. To hear the pedal steel played as you've never heard it before, listen to the song Dirty Business here kzbin.info/www/bejne/raXUc6GbjK2gg80 I'm not a huge country music fan but I'm sure a fan of this. It's the best example of psychedelic country I've ever heard.

Proof positive that you cant make this shit up.. They are some damn fine professional, playing their asses off fools. They could never duplicate this nor could you ever describe it. Hence why they were so recorded. This is the goods. They’re not the best at what they do, they’re the only ones who do what they do.

Agreed. To me, Donna was the Dead's Yoko Ono--always singing off key at the wrong moment but they couldn't get rid of her because Keith was such an awesome keyboard player and they were obviously a package deal, especially since she introduced Keith to the band. She was an experienced session singer, but never sounded right during their live recordings, which I chalk up to the Dead's freewheeling nature and tendency to let things flow rather than bottle them up. But I'm sure they cringed during some of Donna's vocal stylings because I cringe during those moments. If you've ever played in a band where one of the members had crucial equipment, like a sound board or microphones, their girlfriends/wives might be part of the package.
