I never got in to the Grateful Dead in the past. I was well aware of them but didn’t think they were for me. But as I continue to discover music and artists I’m not familiar with, I decided I need to give Grateful Dead a chance. I talked to a few people and this song was the most suggested to start with.

Ok the song most requested is help on the way/slipknot/Franklin tower, but I can’t seem to find a good version on KZbin. Bad quality or really late in their career are the options. And if it’s coming from the Grateful Dead KZbin channel I can’t do it, it will get blocked. So I’m asking for opinions on how I should react to this. Studio? Also there’s an album with a live version of it as well. I can do either one. It doesn’t look like I can get any (good) video for it.

As mentioned the One From The Vault one is great, also Buffalo 5/9/77 is great. kzbin.info/www/bejne/h2LJoK2HnLyLf9k The Dead are THE most recorded band live ever, but if you want the better sounding recordings you'll mostly have to settle for audio only. What their crew with the soundboards (especially Betty Cantor Jackson) and their fans with the crown tapes and fans who have mixed the two into what they call "Matrix" tapes have done is leave a treasure trove of material. But video, these shows being in the 60's,70's and 80's for the most part,is far and few between.

In 1967 the Grateful Dead played at my high school in Los Altos, Ca. I was in last period , in the pool. They all wandered by, giving me a little salute. THEN THEY STARTED! In my life I had never heard anything so loud!!! The ‘light show’ was colored water swishing around on an overhead projector! I remember it all!

Very happy to say I was at this show, sort of. Grateful Dead were playing at Radio City Music Hall in New York City, but because it was Halloween 1980, the boys set up a live broadcast and set up concert sound systems at different theaters around the US. I got into The Orpheum Theater in Boston, back row on the first level, snorting cocaine and had my face painted like Gene Simmons from KISS. There was a costume contest at the intermission, so lots of folks were dressed up. Oh yeah, the music. This whole show is available on DVD and just CD. It was my second show, my first was 9/6/80 in Lewiston, Maine, and I wound up at about 50 up til 1995, when Jerry passed. Just to fill out the band, Phil Lesh is on Bass and Vocals, "We want Phil!", Bill Kreutzman on Drums and Mickey Hart on Percussion. Mickey always said he was a percussionist, not a drummer. And Bill was originally know as Bill The Drummer. I always recommend the Downhill From Here concert video for folks trying to get into The Dead, which is very easy, it is from Alpine Valley, Wisconsin in 1989, I was at the shows there in 1988, awesome venue. Like the boys in Aerosmith say Just Push Play.

Yeah, I was like this...I knew of them since "Touch of Grey" music video when MTV actually played music, I'd heard 'Friend of the Devil" and "Casey Jones" and was like alright, it's fine music but ignored the rest. Now I can't get enough of them! Songs I initially thought were just alright I practically salivate to listen to now. They are incredibly varied in their sound. Cumberland Blues is probably my favorite Jerry shows off his banjo skills in the studio version.

Keyboard solos are a regular occurrence for the GD, everyone in the band is playing some sort of "lead" part throughout most songs. Very few parts that would be considered simple. This was a great era for them (80's), especially in terms of video content which I think are ideal for these types of videos. Check out this one, it's a cover - kzbin.info/www/bejne/o6LYn2trfb6mjM0 Band members in this song (1979-1990) - Lead guitar (vocals as well, not on this song) - Jerry Garcia Rhythm guitar + vocals - Bob Weir Bass - Phil Lesh Keys - Brent Mydland Drums - Bill Kreutzmann Drums/Percussion - Mickey Hart

It's funny, listening to your comments at the start almost echoed my thoughts up until only a couple of years ago. I can remember borrowing a couple of their LP's from friends when I was at school and they just didn't click with me. @@PERKSreCAP I've watched the video again a couple more times and I have to say I like it! 😁 It made me wonder why I didn't particularly like them that much before. So I have listened to 4 of their albums 2 from 1969 and 2 from 1970. It made remember why I didn't like them that much...they were too countryish for my taste back then. I would have been around 14 at the time and a bit of a 'music snob' By then I was heavily into my guitar playing and anything that didn't have what I considered great guitar playing in it was a no no. That is why I loved the blues (and still do) and blues based rock. Groups such as Fleetwood Mac (original band), John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, Savoy Brown, Chicken Shack, Taste etc. I first heard Gary Moore in Skid Row (not the later group), he was only 16 and was already a phenomenal guitarist. He was 17 when I first actually saw him play and he just blew me away! Jimi Hendrix made me first pick up a guitar and Gary just made me want to get as good as I could. Anyway my friend, I am really enjoying our musical journey. 😁 Cheers and stay safe. 😊😎🎸

Thanks for the reaction video... As others have said - interesting song to start with... I absolutely love the Dead but this is just one of a very few songs of theirs that I can take or leave... in the right context and with some performances, it's pretty great - but despite the tempo of it, it always struck me as a bit of darker, meaner song than so much of their other stuff (recognizing that it's not actually *their* song)... Lots of great recommendations by everyone else...keep trying different tunes - their catalog is *so* diverse...you'll find something you really dig and the other stuff really has a way of growing on you after a few listens... Incredible music...

Stagger Lee, Dupree's Diamond Blues, Cumberland Blues are a couple good shorter kinda folky tunes. The Dead played a wide variety of material. I certainly wouldn't pick Minglewood as representative of their best work. Hell they didn't even write it. Pretty much just straight blues, not much nuance. It was one of their most common covers over their career, especiallyin the 80s. I often skip it, just cuz I've heard 50 million similar versions over the years. I saw it live several times, the best by far in L.A. with Branford Marsalis on sax. Some of my favorites are Bird Song, Help/Slip/Franklin's, Scarlet Begonias>Fire On the Mountain, The Eleven, Row Jimmy, Eyes Of the World, Days Between, Althea, Music Never Stopped, Estimated Prophet, Terrapin, Shakedown etc etc etc. Some of my favorite GD moments are the one of a kind improvisational space jams they got into from around 68-74 in songs like Dark Star, Playin in the Band and the Other One. Enjoy your GD journey bro!

Mingelwood is a jugband song. Cannon's Jug Stompers. Bobby does it pretty good justice, it's new because Pigpen used to do it. Mt reCap please talk over the song, pause every now and then if you must, but it's harsh to watch it chopped up Also if you wanna really get the Grateful Dead, review an entire show. The Dead are an Americana jukebox moving through blues, ragtime, rock, funk, psychedelia, disco, ballads//// and they do it so wonderfully, taking you up to the stratosphere then bringing you back down gently. Its' a gestalt. it's a whole thing. YOu wanna get the dead you gotta do more than just listen to one song.
