If you want to hear some of Geoff Castellucci's lowest notes (yes, even lower than Valhalla Calling) and also some of his highest notes ever in one song, plus some of Layne's craziest beatboxing, some of Eli's highest belting, and an all around phenomenal arrangement, then I highly recommend you check out Voiceplay's cover of "Enemy" by Imagine Dragons (which was written for the Arcane TV series).

I could see Maggie back in the late 60's/early 70's climbing out of a multi color painted school bus, in a tie dye dress at a dead show ready to go! I think it would take one show and that would be that! 🙂

to appreciate the Grateful Dead, you should listen to a studio version and then a live version to see just how much fun they could have with their music.

True story: a then-future member of the Grateful Dead sang backup on "Suspicious Minds." So between this and "Touch of Grey," I'd say that if you were to hit the "Dark Star" off of Live/Dead (and, you know, "Truckin'"), then you pretty much would have taken in the full range of the band.

Did you know that there was an entire weekly TV show, in the late 50s, dedicated to families who like to sing along with music? It was called "Sing Along with Mitch". Mitch was Mitch Miller, who toured with an entire chorus. My guess is, they were tired of touring.

A mandolin is so much fun and loved the sound. I knew the chords in my mind and the shape for them but the fingers would not cooperate ) I still miss my Kentucky F-style I had to sell. I want one again but I would have to build my own. If you do get one I backed up all the lessons from bluegrass band. They did guitar, mandolin, banjo and fiddle lessons for free. I gave a hand with the forum organization and questions for them. Some site name thieves stole the name Music Moose and they had to take it down.

Great album and one of their all time great songs. I respectfully disagree with the requestor of this reaction. The follow on efforts to the Dead by its surviving members are obviously not the same, but they bring the music, joy, and sense of community to those who were too young to enjoy the Grateful Dead in their day. I saw them many times between 1975 and Jerry's passing in 1995. I have seen Phil (RIP) and Friends, Dead and Co, and Billy and the Kids and enjoy them very much. I love seeing the younger folks get into spirit!

I read some of the comments below and there is no correct way to appreciate the Dead. @fredrickbays says he enjoys them while dancing which is good but dancing, you miss the depths of Hunter's lyrics which in this song is a spiritual meditation. Whatever way, It's all good. When everyone else were doing protest songs what the Dead were saying was to enjoy your life and your neighbors. That was the extent of their politics. The most famous protest singer, Bob Dylan called Jerry Garcia his brother. It was all about the music and how it positively effected the audience. For and hour or more, if you attended a concert you could forget about the outside world, your personal problems and just be thankful for living. What are my favorite songs? Almost all of them but again, it all depends on the mood you're in. "Casey Jones", 'Truckin'" "Shakedown Street" and "Morning Dew" to mention a few. The only one I didn't like was "Positively 4th Street" by Dylan. It lost the bitterness of the original but if you listen to recent Dylan renditions, it is more Jerry's style. It's more of a lament. Changing the subject, but do you remember how Rod Stewart used the mandolin on Maggie May? Changing the subject once more, there is a new classification of music genre, which you are supposed to become 'high' just on the music. The Grateful Dead are one of the originators. I believe it, it happened to me at one of their concerts.

U kept doing their albums. This is not the Dead at their best. Now Remaster means they fu3k with it and u dont have the dead any more. But then doing their albums u dont have them either. U need to go to shows and only shows for The Dead b/c I can remember many shows that out did the albums by far. I saw them play at least 352 times (that is where I lost count in 1981) Kept going till 84 when the Twines came into my life and gen admin was done away with. Sit down shows are boring. Im dancer as will as singer. &6 in bac health but still the 2 bands that i think r on top are 1st the Band and coming just a hairs berth away is the Dead everyone else as a band is not even close third. Singer another story there but Jerry and Bobby are in the top ten alone with Levon and Robby. Top r three women Patsy, Janis and Bobbie. One just as good as the other.

Yes. I was in S.F. before they recorded their first album and was really disappointed because of the poor quality. I can say the same for Janis' "Ball and Chain." The Dead spent a lot of their money on improving their sound. Each concert was an experiment in an attempt to reach perfection and their audience were the judges not the record producers. They would adjust to how the audience were reacting on a particular night. Music is like an actor in a play. Some nights you go through your lines as usual but for some reason the creative spirit descends upon you and you are better than normally. The audience can see, hear and feel it. There will never be another group like the Dead. It's been tried but fell short. Not only were it for the talent of the group but the unique chaotic times. They were never too political, their music is all about forgetting about the troubles of life for a few hours and enjoying life either alone or with a kindred spirit.

I think this is one of the most often misquoted lyrics in music. If you listen closely it's the COLD of sunshine, not gold. This is a deliberate oxymoron pairing with the next line, "played on the harp unstrung."
@88wildcat
@88wildcat Ай бұрын
I've got Box of Rain-the book of all of Robert Hunter's lyrics. According to Hunter it is the gold of sunshine. Now if this was Bob Weir singing it is possible the lyrics would be different. He did that with some of the songs he wrote with Hunter and it drove Hunter crazy enough to eventually reach a point where he refused to write with Weir any longer, but this is Garcia on the vocals and Garcia never changed Hunter's lyrics.

This is the Dead's Philosophy song Jerry never allowed his voice to be recorded that clear. His voice being half mumbled was how he sang and made him what he was. Dont like this one art all Now u need to go fined a very good show one and play it side by side and u will hear the dif at once. I the this one and will go no further with it. Just for doing this one I will give u a thumbs up but I really want to thumb down it for the distraction this did to the tune.
