Great story! Brings back some fine memories. However, the 2 shows at Poplar Creek took place in 1983! Summer of 1984 they played Alpine Valley, far and away my favorite venue during the 1980's ☮️

Didn't see them at Poplar, but did see other bands at that gone venue. Too many houses too close to keep it going. Should've knocked down the houses instead, but Alpine was far better. Rosemont was horrible pig show by 93 and 94

It's great to hear from a "convert". My very first concert was Aerosmith, and I still like them, but the Grateful Dead is a whole other thing, which I love. Managed to see them about 50 times from 1980-1995. Best times of my life. So happy that there are other folks who learned to love The Dead, as I did, and do.

Great to hear you were coherent enough to remember the concert. I was never a Dead Head, but I respect their legacy and how their music and overall vibe touched so many fans on a level few bands have ever done.

Thanks for sharing !Here's my story. St. Louis, Mo , 1971. A buddy's Uncle Clarence was working security at The Fox Theatre. ( Home of Chuck Berry's Hail Hail Rock N' Roll.) He just happens to be working the stairs leading up to the stage. He lets us on stage in between songs and we make our way to the back of the stage and sit down on some amplifier cases. When I feel it's appropriate, I light up a joint , so my claim to fame is I smoked a joint on stage at a Dead show ! LOL !

Cool story. I went to several shows during the same time period. I too had no idea what it was all about until the first time. Felt like it was a time machine back to the 60s. The girls with the bells...We called it the twinkle zone. There was a grassy area above the seating that wasn't in direct line of sight with the sound system so the music wasn't as loud. As we walked into the twinkle zone, the music faded away and the bells took over. They were dancing around us without making eye contact or bumping into us. It was bizarre.
@timharrigian6845Ай бұрын
That's a great description. Like being on a different planet. Plus Grill Chesse sandwiches for $1.00 in the parking lot so they would have gas money to the next show

Early 80s,The Dead stayed at the Austin Marriott where I was working room service. They were playing a gig ay Manor Downs. I waited on Jerry G twice in one night. First time he ordered Mariott Burger, fries and a hot fudge sundae, later another hot fudge sundea. I noticed one of the times when I went to his room to set the food tray down, there was an ashtray full of used matches, no cigarettes, just piled high matches, and his were Grey, like he'd been handling charcoal. One of the times on my way out of the room, there was a knock on the door. Since I was leaving, I was the one opening the door. Somebody, guy, reached out, thinking it was him answering the door, had something in his hand and joyfully said, "here you go!" Saw ot was me and went, "whoa!" Anyway, I went to another room and somebody put me on the guest list for 2 for the show. I wasn't a fan at the time, and when we got there, there was such a crowd at the gates, the decided not to go. Probably a big mistake. But at least I have my memory with Jerry!

My good friend Dan was a bellboy - desk clerk at the Alexis Hotel in Seattle when Bob Dylan came to town. His entourage took 3 floors and Dan was assigned to lay out a mini Bristol Cream bottles and and a mint to each bed. I guess Jakob was in charge of their huge English Mastiff and Dan was a little on edge. The smell of Northern Lights wafted throughout. Anyway Dan and his doorman friend happened to see Bob alone window shopping next door and one said "Short little fuc*er isn't he. Welp, that's my Bob Dylan story.
