I wrote Robert Hunter an email about 20 years ago...I started by saying you don’t know me but I want to thank you for all of your songs as like countless others they mean a great deal to our lives, etc. he just replied back with “you’re welcome...and I know exactly who you are.”

We are all connected to exactly what the band and Hunter and Barlow etc were all connected to. No single body on this earth is separate from that same thing. We are all it friend, I know you and you know me, we all simply reflect each other and ultimately we reflect the entirety of our universe. We are here, on this earth, ultimately due to light, without it we were never destined to be here. Warmth and light gave birth to everything on this earth, you and I included. We aren't separate from anything at all actually, from a distance the earth will appear as any other planet in our universe appears, a closer look reveals us though, conscious beings that know we are on earth and know we are part of the universe, what a trip. We are the literal embodiment of what we might call, the universe experiencing itself. We aren't anything but that too, all our little hang ups and trips and issues on this earth in our lives, it's all part of the same thing happening anywhere at any given time. It hurts, or it doesn't hurt. It's difficult or it's simple. It's unworthy but it's worthy. It isn't but it is. Our lives are fleeting and the ability to experience authentic and not manufactured joy, that's our single greatest attribute.

I’d try something a little riskier than Cornell ‘77. I mean, it’s an amazing show, but it’s a really tight show with less exploration than other shows. I just listened to this Houston show from ‘72 that’s pretty fantastic. You need at least 4 hours, though. When the band takes and intermission, take an intermission yourself. I could be mistaken, but I believe I read in other comments that Jamel doesn’t partake of herb. While cannabis lovers and lovers of psychedelics certainly certainly have some great experiences with the Dead, the way Jamel obviously gets the music, he doesn’t need it to enjoy a whole show. It’s a journey from start to finish with rock n roll, blues, country, psychedelia, and jazz exploring all the depths of human emotions. There’s love, loss, lust, you name it. Anyway, try this show on for size: kzbin.info/www/bejne/o6akiZx-mZ10p5Y

I've always felt that Terrapin Station was always the Dead's studio masterpiece. So many parts flowing together, all the ups and downs that were rarely captured in the live performances, IMHO. That said, I still loved to hear them play it live, it just had a special feel to it for me. Jamal, so glad you can appreciate the Grateful Dead as much as the rest of us do. Late is better than never, and sadly for some people, it will may be never, unless you or I can make that difference.
@SilversteinRescue2 ай бұрын
I was thinking of typing the same kind of comment. This song was an amazing treat to get live, and for a die hard fan that already knew the magic of it you were lucky to see it. But I do think for a first listen the studio version is the way to go. It’s just such a long, complicated song that was hard to capture all the nuances live perfectly. But unlike other songs of theirs it doesn’t really benefit from extra jamming live, they mostly just played the track, maybe some extra playing in the solos but iirc (and I could be blanking) they didn’t usually take this song that out there beyond the usual structure live.

I started watching your Reaction videos and loved how you reacted to classic rock songs you apparently had never heard, like Boston, Rare Earth, lots and lots of songs and bands. Frankly, it wasn't the reaction I thought you'd have. And I was pleased. And then I saw that you had a Terrapin Station Reaction video and I thought, I've GOT to see his Reaction to that. And then I clicked on the video - BAM you're background was completely changed! Suddenly, you're in a room with Grateful Dead all over the place and wearing a Workingman's Dead t-shirt and Terrapin hat! You were completely transformed! You get the Dead. Jerry's voice was in rough shape for this. It would be a good idea for you to listen to the studio version where not only is his voice in better shape but the song is played with an orchestra backing. This version is not the complete song. The part that follows contains the fastest riffs I have ever heard on record with the possible exception of Jimi Hendrix. It's is the moat grandiose track the Dead ever did and well worth a listen. And you nailed it. "Robert Hunter would get the people, the band would keep the people." I've been a Deadhead for 55 years and I've never heard it said better. Anyone with clarity of understanding is officially crowned a DEADHEAD for life. Thank you, Jamel. You honor us.

Word is... during a thunderstorm in San Francisco, Jerry was driving across one of those bridges and the music just struck him. He went straight home, During the same storm, Robert Hunter was inspired to write the lyrics. Something new is waiting to be born.

I’ve been a huge Dead Head since I was 12 went to my first show in 1992 quit school & never looked back.... your interpretation of the Band is pretty much what brought me to love them.... they have a way of making u relate the lyrics to what’s going on in your life well said like your videos

And then on a single day, each one separately found themselves with their grandest creation alive in their heads. Watching a lightning storm across the San Francisco bay, Hunter begins with an invocation of the Muse: Let my inspiration flow In token rhyme suggesting rhythm That will not forsake me Till my tale is told and done While the firelight's aglow Strange shadows from the flames will grow 'till things we've never seen Will seem familiar . . . Hunter calls to the creative goddess and she hears him, delivering him the words and even tapping his partner on the shoulder too! At that very moment Garcia was driving across the Richmond-San Rafael bridge and heard the melody. He turned around and went home to get it on tape. The next day they met up and handed the song to each other. “I showed him the words and he said, 'I've got the music.' They dovetailed perfectly and Terrapin edged into this dimension.”

As I heard Bobby say, they don't create the songs, the songs exist, they just find them and bring them into our world.. The music plays the band..

I just want to point out how exciting it is to watch you discover this music. You're right on the cusp of a life long unlimited devotion! I can't wait for you to experience your first live show!! The magick in the air is unlike anything you've ever felt. You'll be a celebrity in the dead lot by the time next tour comes around! Glad to see all the heads supporting you on your journey! Much love to you and yours 🖤

Terrapin Station was always one of my favourite GD tracks. I still think the recorded version is better but hey this is good. Try Walkin In The Wind by Traffic early Steve Winward. Youre doing a great job of bringing all this good music to a new generation I grew up with this so its great to hear again.

This is one of those that in addition to a live version of single songs he should really listen to the whole album in a sitting and consume it as a singular artwork. Fantastic vinyl rip here for doing that: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jperqZKEZbJonq8

Such a great tune.. The deeper you get into the dead & Hunter's lyrics the more you begin to see a connection with mythology and religion. Just a personal observation I've made after 30 years of listening to the Dead

Not only was Jerry missing a finger he had a stroke a year before this and had to re-learn to play the guitar
@lisarainbow97033 жыл бұрын
That's when they cancelled the Ventura shows, he went into a diabetic coma from an infected tooth. We drove all the way from Illinois, and arrived to see the cancellation notice on the marquis. We ended up with a group of hippies in the woods in the nearest national forest, doing a huge prayer circle for Jerry.

hey Jamel, just for your info, to make a mental note and come back to later: My wife had heard Terrapin Station many times but one time, I played the song from the original album, Terrapin Station. Just letting you know the album version has an extra part that they don't play in concert at the end of the song, what is it an extra minute or two but it's there. Deadheads know what I'm talking about and it's really nothing spectacular but I just wanted you to know that the album version is the complete original recording. Of course in concert it's awesome.
@neonpark18743 жыл бұрын
I disagree. This is one Dead tune where the album version is superior (most of the time) to the live versions. They never (almost never?) do the entire song in concert. The part(s) that is/are left out are some of the best parts of the song. The sound quality of the original recording is spectacular (including excellent vocals). To put it more simply, it's just tight and jams. That said, I'm happy to hear it when at a show - but for Jamel, he neads to hear the original.
