Exquisite is the flow of Dark Star into St Stephen into the Eleven. As someone says here, that is an experience hard to separate into single “songs”. It is an entire cathedral of crescendoing continuity.

This was the song that opened my eyes and brought me to The Grateful Dead. It remains probably my favourite song of theirs still. The version that I first heard was from "Live Dead". Recently I bought the re-mastered album from itunes. Well worth the 9 bucks! This song is absolutely soaring and totally unpredictable. LOVE IT!!

phil and bobby are two of the most under-appreciated musicians i can think of. yeah, they've had their ups and downs, but when they're "on", they do stuff no one else can do. no one.

Yep. Phil is a musician's musician and Bobby has the weirdest (or most unique) approach to rhythm guitar that I've literally ever heard in all my 41 years.

@@DB-LBC the only other group that had the mastery of that approach was the Allman Brothers Band who ended up being close collaborators with the Dead. Their long improvisations is their best work and some of the best things that came out of rock and roll.

I still remember my first listen of 2-28-69, on a tape of course lol, and it absolutely floored me. What I would give to have been there.

mind blown. Bought the bootleg 2CD set "The Dead Don't Have No Mercy" at a Tempe rare CD store, perfect SBD, sounded exactly like this, straight from reel to reel to CD... almost wore them out spinning those gems for friends and acquaintances... '69 was a glorious year for the Dead.
