So this is the song that got me on the bus - summer 78 I was 15, parked on a dead end (funny that) getting stoned with a friend and looking out at the Long Island Sound. He plops in the Skeletons 8 track and when it got around to the abridged version of this I was hooked - that rhythmic swing feel to Pigs vox to Jer's lead to that frantic end - hooked.

Why do people always comment about how someone was "underappreciated"? You find it on every video and song, even when the song was number one on the charts, triple platinum etc. Pigpen was never underappreciated. He is highly appreciated.

The ultimate version of this song. No mush stuff. No long winded vocal diatribes. No broken solos, no bad screams by Bobby. Great gospel style back up vocals. Drum solos are tasty and not too long. Explosion ending is fab, Only thing missing is the minor progression like the St Louis version. This version is still better, The best of all versions I have ever hear. Guess that's why it may the album........

Just saw Dead and Co. at the Hollywood Bowl. My 50th year as a Deadhead. I kept waiting for Dead and Co. to break out into "Lovelight" and bring down the house just like I saw them do it at the Fillmore East in 1969. The did not and Jerry is still dead but I enjoyed the concert anyway.

Two dimensional, with Jerry and Bob only and neither, as awesome as they were in their genres, could effuse Pig's authentically powerful blues presence...I saw Dead first at Woodstock (WEIRD scene...), then in May of '70 at Fillmore East, NYC, then in HEIGHT of "deadness", I hung out with Jerry for couple of hours,virtually alone, Aug '70.Smoking dope with him (mine...), I picked his brain on newest project, "Am Beauty".He turned me on to free tix to The Dead's show, THAT night SF Fillmore WEST.

***** favorite album by pink floyd is piper at the gates of dawn. one of the most whimsically psychedelic albums i've ever heard. syd barrett was the heart of a child incarnate that became trapped in a nightmare of drugs and insanity....and pigpen's influence on the dead was nothing but great. it went beyond what he contributed himself (which was a lot in his own right) and extended out to the other members. his passing was a huge loss for the dead but they of course dealt with it in the best way possible like they always did whenever they lost a keyboardist.
@wobrien0079 жыл бұрын
cookq Sorry man, that's crazy talk. The Dead were a superb blues band with Pigpen. They morphed into a lot of wonderful things after Pig passed away, but they never did the blues as well again. Listen to any version of Big Boss Man and get back to me.....
