@@FrankLadd Unfortunately it costs money to do that; or provide facilities for people to take their junk, to stop them getting trashed in the first place. Unless there's profit to be made, our conservative government aren't interested. In fact they recently voted to allow the water companies to pump unlimited amounts of raw sewage into our rivers. It's good for the shareholders, not so good for the river... 😢 Our prime minister has (after 2 years of lies, corruption and scandal) being forced to resign by his party. There is currently a race to choose his replacement. The next leader of our country will be decided by party members. (approx 160000 older rich white men, shareholders) The leadership contenders are appealing to these members by promising to lower their taxes (by cutting services that would clean the rivers), deregulating (allowing companies to pollute the rivers further) and striping rights (making people's right to protest illegal). They've also made trespass a criminal offense, meaning being caught wild camping could potentially get you a prison sentence.☹️

Great comment on the lazy fish and the avocado toast! 🥑 I fly fished in my childhood and early teens and have wanted to get back into it for years, but it was never doable at the time and then recently with our bike travel it became even harder - but I finally took the plunge and bought the Reyr rod, which makes it much more possible for me to carry/use a rod in our current lifestyle. I had to buy to 6wt because of the size of fish we get here and as you'd expect, it ain't such a supple beast. Re-learning casting has been a little tricky on it, but I'm getting there. Watching you guys ride and fish has given me some food for thought and helped inspire me to go for it. 👍

When walking down the trail keep the rod pointed behind you. Much easier to get through all the vegetation, and if you fall you won't break off your tip. I suspect same is true when riding with the rod assembled in your hand.

My two favourite hobbies! Nice video! The best way I've found to carry a rod is: if you have front-fork/everything cages, strap your rod tube vertically to the front-fork cage and secure the top to the handlebar near the stem by using a voile strap. Really secure and you always have your precious rod in sight. Worked a treat on a recent bike-packing trip to remote Scottish lochs.

Have you ever tried a Tenkara rod? I know they are limited to brook trout etc but they are so compact, I can't think of a bike you couldn't carry one on and my 15 foot rod folds down to just over 12" plus there is no reel to carry, just a few bits of line and a small box of flies - worth a look for a super compact kit.

Thanks for bringing in fishing. I think they are very complementary pursuits. I live on Vancouver Island where there are lots of back roads, rivers and lakes. I have a telescoping 9' rod which has a reversible butt so you can use a fly reel or a spinning reel. I can be on the water in 60 seconds.

So I use a spinner instead of fly, but I used your videos as inspiration to put together a bike rig for fishing. I tried fixing the rod to the frame when just moving from one spot to another, but it was super janky. I always set the hook on one of the eyelets. Once I started pedaling my lack of foresight meant the hook was right up by the rest of my "bait and tackle". Some of the most nervous riding of my life.

I never considered a bike ride with a little bit of fishing. Whenever fishing with me the bike is just a tool to get to fishy spots. When I first went out west fly fishing I brought my lightest 7 wt rod and we had a blast. I think sometimes people do not land big fish because their rods are set up for little 6 inch fish which we caught a lot of and laughed about. When I moved to North Carolina I got a 5 weight and I don't see a reason to ever go smaller than that. So I have 5, 7, 8, and 10 weight. The 10 is strickly a salt water rod so it is used from a boat or wading salt flats. The 8 is for Bass and smaller inshore fish, but it goes the bike fishing with the 7 and 5.
@mikeymon1

the advantage of the lighter tackle is it makes a small fish feel like a bigger fish, and in the high country the shorter rods make sense on brushy streams...

I think you should go only fishing when you have a interest in eating it, thats the first thing I learned for my fishing license in Germany, catch&release is forbidden here. I don't know much about fishing but I also wondered about this aspect. (I'm German too.) A quick research showed that the permission to fish is way harder to get in Germany. Maybe that's why we don't have too much trouble with overfishing as the Americans and therefore the priority leans more forward health. Just a theory 🙂
