Sweet Potatoes contain amylase, an enzyme that convert starch into sugar. The enzyme is activated while the sweet potato bakes. Since baking a sweet potato takes longer than steaming or frying, baked sweet potatoes are significantly higher on the glycemic index than the other cooking methods. I can imagine this comes in handy for high intensity rides.

There's so much to learn and much more to learn as you carry on, into the gravel world. I'd like to add a couple of tips to the list. If you're going to riding in the dark, don't just take bike lights, take a small head light with you. If you get a mechanical, you can't work on it with a bike light held on one hand. And especially if you ride alone, always tell somebody your route and your ETA. If or when something bad happens? Your phone might not be able to help you. I also carry a, small non-smart spare phone. That one works on a different network. Just in case my usual network doesn't have any coverage where I might be, the other one could. Speaking from experience. It really can be a life saver. I know you might not be always traveling far from home but it's always far enough.

Not only carry a multi tool, but be sure it has a chain breaker. Spare quick link is a good idea as well.

My tip: buy a mountain bike in addition to your gravel bike. They both have their strengths, but doing some more technical single track riding will give you confidence to tackle anything you might find during a long gravel ride.

always use both brakes at the same time. If you ride loose gravel -> use more back brake. Tarmac -> more front. But always both of them. This tips works Snow, ice, gravel, sand, path and tarmac.

really low gearing if you plan on carrying stuff. i recently moved from a 40t chainring to an elliptical 38t with an 11-42 cassette. it means i don't suffer on climbs while i'm carrying stuff, which is most of what my riding is. the only "negative" is i get to stop pedalling and get aero slightly earlier on road descents

50 miles gravel…not = to 50 miles tarmac. Gotta adjust expectations. Rule of thumb for me on all day gravelly rides: prolly 35-55 miles with 3500-5500 elevation. Usually choose something within those boundaries…oh and don’t fall. Cuz it sux.

Putting the visor down on a helmet directs airflow over the helmet, putting it up allows more air to travel through the helmet. It's cooler to wear a visor hat and have air run through the helmet.

@@hambo76 but my mountain bike helmet with a visor has air running through to keep my head cool too, it’s designed to have a visor and good airflow. Everything I read about the visorless road helmets talks about vision issues but then I’m confused because they wear a visor anyway with the beanie.
