in the mid seventy's I was a mechanic at the gravely dealer I worked on many of these the one you have is very old and mostly original as time went on they changed over to spin on oil filters and the PTO in the front was engaged by a long rod attached to the handle bar very cool old machine thanks for the trip down memory lane

OH MY GOODNESS!!! You allowed two children to have a great time operating an old machine all by themselves without a flock of paramedics and an air ambulance standing by! Whatever are the Health & Safety Police going to say? Super video, especially the last part. Best Wishes, Brendan

My dad had a house that came with an old model L. My brother and I used it to mow over small trees. It had everything with it and I miss that old mule.

We had a Gravely when I was growing up and it was a beast. When you started it you had to be carefull of kickback. When it ripped the strap which had a small dowel on the end to grip it out of your hand you made sure you had the compression stroke set before you pull and give it all you got or it's going to give you something back! I cut down the mail box one day with it. I was trying to get close to the pipe and bam sliced it in half. it's a mini bushhog. One tuff tractor.

the bar cycle mower will mow through most anything. I remember mowing fencerows with a model l, and it would mow through horse weeds and scrub brush. it was a heavy old brute, but with all the assessories available, you could do a lot of work. thanks for the memories this video brought back.

My grandfather had two L models, different years. I have lots of memories cutting the grass with it. The handlebars would vibrate like crazy and if I went up onto a mound they could jab my thighs if I didn't pay attention. My grandfather would lap the valves on the dinner table and my grandmother would go ballistic! Good times, I used to look forward to cutting the grass!

That is a fine example of American Craftsmanship! I have 2 running, 3 under construction and 1 that's just a shell. I think they are the best garden tractors ever made. With very little attention they just keep running. My newest one was built in 1963, oldest in '48. I like your sulky design, how do you make bicycle hubs that are only supported on one side? I tried when I was young but had no success. Cheers to you Pete, you've been a better teacher than I ever had. Please keep them coming!!!.

My dad had the Gravely tractor dealership in Shreveport LA right after WW-II. He sold them all over East Texas, LA, OK and AR. Problem was it was hard to get tractors and parts for them... so he got frustrated and sold his dealership. He always regretted that decision. All through high school in the 1960 I spent many many hours mowing laws on one. LOL

@mrpete222 the engine and transmission shares oil so the vent is built into the filler cap out near the nose. with it smoking like that i'm surprised it doesn't fowl out the plug. btw my dad owns cogan valley machine and we specialize in aftermarket gravely parts. we also do complete jug restorations.

If your Grandson ever gets tired of the old girl, and by any chance, you no longer have a desire for it sir, I would like to give it a new home ! Have no idea where you live, but I am a self confessed Gravely addict ! This old slant nose L model is one of the very earliest of the units, as a number of folks have commented on ! Yep ! The Gravely mechanic is correct, for safety sake, adjust the reverse rod lever to can over, and hold. As for the oil smoke, these cast-iron blocks, and separate cast-iron cylinders, are extremely rugged, and will machine very nicely, to over-size, however, all the necessary parts exist. She will live to run like brand new again. My name is Ray, and I am paralyzed from my shoulders down. Use my love for Gravelys to keep my mind occupied ! Hope to maybe hear from you one day ! So good to see you spending time with your Grandson, like my Grampa did with me ! Outside, a working with, or on the old Gravely ! Ray

@@mrpete222 Good morning Sir, Well, that's a wonderful thing, if someone can give it a good home ! They "the older slant nosed" L models are getting to be rare ! I appreciate your getting back to me, would be one of those things that I would wonder about. But that unit of yours can be brought back to brand new condition for some of us crazy guys that are addicted ! Thanks again for the note ! Enjoy your day Sir !

theres one of those here on my property..its a shame cuz its not worth restoring. Its been half sunk in the mud for years. It would of been a cool little restoration project. Thanks for sharing this video.. Its really neat to see one run.

Rebuild that motor and get some attachments for that old beast. You won't be sorry. We've had "L" models since I was a kid and I'm in my fifties. I have three or four of them in various states of repair. I have one that runs and operates great. They're fantastic for rough mowing, plowing, and roto-tilling. They're the fastest roto-tiller you can use. And yeah, don't let the grandkids lock the reverse lever. It is dangerous. I have a scar on my leg as proof.

run some sea foam in the gas and in the oil and it may loosen up the rings to seal better.

a set of piston rings would make it quite smoking. the approx. would be $45.

well tubal, I'm gonna break down and put a oil pressure gauge on my 57' gravely L model, it has the fram filter and high pressure pump system. I'm not like you older guys that know a lot of things, I think internet isn't helping either. I google where to put the gauge, and all I find is someone showing how nice their tractor runs and then a picture of a gauge with oil pressure. do I put the gauge in between the pump and the filter or after the filter? Does it matter? I would think it would, but maybe it doesn't? Thanks. PS and the kid on the tractor...it's the best time to get him on it. He'll remember that the rest of his life. I used to shoot spuds out of a gnarly spud gun to my kid, he was 12. we'd be close enough the spuds would generate a curve from whizzing by him, at probably over 100mph. OR we'd launch 651B Caterpillar Scraper pistons out of their liners with welded 1/4" plate welded to the bottom with 8 feet of prima cord as the propellant. back behind the datsun pickup door, we'd watch the piston cap (only from the bottom ring left, every thing lower turned into vapor,) shot almost out of sight, before it came down. There was no liner to find, the plate was a bowl, and the piston cap showed serious signs of seizure on the now stuck rings, and the ring lands. I wish I could've done more as a father, and he's told me those things are what stood out the most.
