It is believed that there has been a church on this site since 528 AD. In 1148 Donough O'Carroll, King of Oriel, established St Mary's Priory, however the present ruins date to the 13th century. Prior to that, the church was subjected to near constant damage and attack, with deliberate fires razing it in 1152, 1160 and again in 1166.
St. Mary's Abbey Cemetery consists of graves within and adjacent to the ruins of St. Mary's Abbey on the outskirts of Louth Village. The location is shown on Google Maps as "Louth Churches and Oratory." The cemetery can be reached by way of a footpath from a local road just to the south of the site.
Locating graves in the cemetery is a difficult proposition as the site has largely been surrendered to nature and now features tall grass, damaged gravestones and uneven ground. Many of the gravestones still standing have deteriorated to the point of being unreadable. Fortunately, gravestone inscriptions were recorded in 1980, to the extent possible, and preserved in the County Louth Archaeological and Historical Journal.
The site of the cemetery is noteworthy as the location of a monastery founded by St. Mochta in the sixth century. The monastery was regarded as one of the great ecclesiastical centers of Ireland during the Middle Ages.

@@SerenitySueGraveyards Another Aussie who loves your vidz. I'm astounded by the beautiful old graveyards you take us to. Especially when you show us a grave dated 1727 .. when you consider that the First Fleet to Aus landed in 1788 ... It's just mind-boggling to see these magnificent ruins that date back to 1312. it's hard to wrap an Aussie head around the length of history in such a beautiful place. I seriously need to go to Ireland and Scotland where all of my ancestors came from - mostly via England, and they mostly came here as convicts, eventually becoming free settlers - the pioneers of this nation. I need to see where they came from in order to understand my true heritage and my place in the here and now ... I feel it very deeply every time I watch your channel .. like it's calling me. Thank you. XX

Lots of my Irish/ Scott ancestors were sent to the prison colony of Australia too.the Brits also sent some to Barbados etc to work on sugar cane plantations.... history is a lot more convoluted than commonly thought

With all those pieces of lead and wood lying around, I'll say it's a mausoleum! Perhaps the crest and inscribed (looks like 1729 at the bottom, but might just be my eyes, lol) stones were mounted on the outside, (door and plaque?), and fell off over time. The whole place definitely needs some urgent TLC. Loved all the history in this adventure Sue, thanks for braving the bull paddock for us!! Be safe. Deb of Oz XXX

The little structure with the horseshoes, filled with bones, where the family crest was seen inside...in the far back looked to be old pieces of markers...gave me the impression that these had been dug up from another location and all placed inside....perhaps to make room for others in another area or maybe they were the oldest that no longer could be read? I've tried to get Ivy to grow over my house like that. The heat in Arizona is too great, and it kills it off. I love the look of it, and it makes for perfect shade. I love the sound of squeaky gates and doors. It reminds me of being in an old black and white horror movie. That is such a magnificent place. The scattered bones add a bit of class to the spook factor of the squeaky doors. I get the impression that the "ossuary" is more of a dumping ground to make room for new graves. Then, they just sealed it up with the metal gate.

Hi sue, this was a great video! This abbey must have been stunning in its heyday. Beautiful stonework on the walls. Regarding your question, I would say if the structure is 600-700 years old, its possible it was a mausoleum since the caskets would have long ago decayed and only some bones remain (scattered I guess by critters that entered over the centuries). Good question!

What a beautiful graveyard with a bit of eeriness about it. That church would have been beautiful to see. It’s a bummer most of the gravestones are not readable because the ones you read were really old. I could imagine some in the 1600’s or maybe even older. Odd how all those bones and headstones wound up in that mausoleum. Really weird. Ok God bless you two.

Beautiful area! Wish they would preserve it. I think that was an ossuary. No idea why all those bones exposed though! Unless what they put them in deteriorated and animals scattered the bones?!? Thanks Sue another interesting find!💕

Awesome place! So full of history! There is really too much here to comment on. The graveyard is going to need a lot of TLC, for a long time to get into shape. That vault could be a osserary ( I am probably not spelling it correctly) Do you think it possible, that it could be shoud burials? This is one of your best videos, thank you very much Sue and GV. Take care. 😊

@SerenitySueGraveyards Thank you very much for getting back to me Sue. I really hope that a reputable organization will come in and help to preserve, perhaps restore the entire grounds. That is a supercool place! Do you think a revisit on Halloween 🎃 might be possible? Only in the daytime, I would not recommend walking on that uneven ground in the graveyard at night. Thank you again Sue.

I find your video fascinating, and VERY interesting, but sad that this graveyard was not taken care of! We in southwest Texas have a graveyard like that, but ours is from the old west where famous gunslingers are buried, it's all desert though, not the green that place is.

I would like to have known the years of the new burials. It seems a story behind being buried there. It could have been anonimous out of respect. This graveyard is almost overwhelming and chaotic burials jumbled. So amazing............thanks

1974 I think was the latest burial I saw in there, I've often found a misrule of old and new, mostly they are buried with family who already had a plot. Anyone buried inside the church are more than likely ones with more money, well know families

Personally, I would notify someone the the bones are in that state, lying scattered around on the floor. Feels disrespectful, someone clearly chucked them in there once with no care for the people they belonged to. Great video!

I believe the wee leprechaun door you ducked under, had stairs down originally too. When the relative had work done in 1943, the cement was added. Maybe there had been vandalism.

Probably a stupid sounding question, but in America it's hard to find anything much over 200 years old. When you're in and around building over 1000 years old is there still a sense of the people who built them, worshipped in them and are entombed in them or has so much time passed that it's impossible to really feel any connection? If there are any crypts like the ones you guys have in our country I'm not aware of them. We have mausoleums and some are abandoned so of course people break into them to rob them but unless they've been violated there's no doors or windows to look thru to see old coffins still amazingly intact. It amazes me how different burial practices were then compared to today.

Not a stupid question at all, yes definitely at times I feel energy, like goosebumps. Sometimes I feel the stones. I'm not sure why, I feel drawn to touch them. It's a strange feeling of peace. I don't always feel it though.
