Professor Mark van Raamsdonk of the University of British Columbia gives the Stanford Physics and Applied Physics Colloquium.
The AdS/CFT correspondence from string theory provides a quantum theory of gravity in which spacetime and gravitational physics emerge from an ordinary non-gravitational system with many degrees of freedom. In this talk, I will explain how quantum entanglement between these degrees of freedom is crucial for the emergence of a classical spacetime, and describe progress in understanding how spacetime dynamics (gravitation) arises from the physics of quantum entanglement.

This beautiful lecture describes a "snapshot photograph" of a part of a hugely dynamic system. It cannot and is not designed to explain the totality of entanglement nor gravity. However, that in no way negates the truth of that piece of information regarding a very real relationship between gravity and quantum entanglement. It is one more piece of the puzzle, not the finished puzzle. This is how knowledge grows overtime and when enough of the puzzle pieces are in place we will "see" a stunning picture emerge. In all scientific study it seems that suddenly a great discovery is made by several individuals around the world at the same time. In truth they are simply laying down the last few puzzle pieces and announcing the whole picture, based on the hard work of so many others that came first. Complaining about the obvious holes or missing puzzle pieces of information isn't constructive, work to fill them with another puzzle piece my friend or just enjoy the breath taking show for free!

Entanglement makes sense in a fundamental way to the logical relation between gravitational physics to quantum physics, It has helped me differ from the Relativity theory of Einstein "an unlinked tiny piece of imagination that works", which in my view is a case scenario that matches precisely and just works nicely on a rather ideal model within the universe, but is distant from the more complex real black holes/matter "ENTANGLED" relation.

Thank you your overall dissertation helps me visualize a simple four dimensional symbol that incorporates and combines all... an ankh with yin yang base which is the complete self contained equation that makes sense to me. It could be transcribed using sacred geometry. The simplicity is a good beginning point. Three dimensionally I envision it as the convergence point of two pyramids joined at the apex, spinning and entwined... could say entangled like snakes on a pole... once again in a four dimensional perspective, yet of different element. As a whole this would have many component parts.

Thank you for this tremendous video. I just thought I'd mention something at 27:40. He defines the entropy of a subsystem A in (A union B), but it's equal to the entropy of B in (A union B), so we can call it the entanglement of A and B. It comes down to showing that the non-zero eigenvalues of (M M^*) and (M^* M) are equal, where M is a complex matrix which might not be square. These eigenvalues are the probabilities p_i.

I am absolutely fascinated by the idea (published by Prof Van Raamsdonk) that the connectedness of space time could maybe be thought of as an emergent property of Quantum Entanglement. I certainly do not fully understand this idea or its limitations but, to me, it seems that Quantum Entanglement could be related to a measure of locality and might provide some new insight into the local realism of our universe. I have a related question about what this may (or may not) suggest about how to imagine the collapse of a waveform. Let's say, for example, the spin of a particle is in a superposition of states and is then "measured" to be in a definite state (i.e. it's waveform collapses). Before continuing I need to ask a clarifying question for my own understanding: Generally would this "measured" particle become entangled with the particle or field with which it was "measured" (e.g. due to conservation of angular momentum)? For my question I am assuming (pending clarification) that entanglement between the "measured" particle and what it was "measured" with does occur. Finally my question is, if Entanglement does imply a connectedness akin to locality, could the collapse of a waveform and any resulting entanglement be imagined as if the entangled quantum objects remain (in some sense) adjacent or overlapping in space and time? For context I have not studied Quantum Mechanics beyond an introductory course and that was a while ago. Thanks for taking the time to read and reply. Sorry if my question is unclear.

“The origin of momentum creation is founded on the application of energy. Momentum serves as the initial cause of pushing and pulling. The energy, emanating from the internal core of a planet, is what gives rise to momentum, commonly referred to as gravity, and not due to the planet’s size, mass, or space-time curvature. For example, when energy is applied, it generates the necessary momentum for the actions of pushing and pulling. Without the application of energy, momentum cannot be established. Consequently, force cannot be exerted for pushing and pulling, as it lacks a physical existence. This, in turn, clarifies why force is not gravity.” ~Guadalupe Guerra

Entangled states form in terms of the spin polarizations regardless of the charge of the particles. In case of the quantum fields, the polarization states of the boson quantum fields are up or down or zero giving rise to the quantum entanglement under the action of polarizing magnetic fields resulting in what we can call ```Hyper-Minkowski space``.

I'd like to ask two questions refering to Prof.Raamsdonk's talk, 1). For an AdS--sphere--BH, given a temperature ,there are two different BH solution, so what difference of the dual CFTs correspond to this 2 solutions? Are they in same quantum state? 2). Still AdS--sphere--BH, if the mass of BH approach to zero, on the one hand, the BH temperature diverges, which means the state of BDY CFT will be a highly mixed state (? I'm not sure), and on the other hand, the bulk geometry will degenerate to pure AdS geometry, so how to understand a highly mixed CFT state living on the boundary of pure AdS, in the standard AdS/CFT correspondence? (These questions may be trivial or wrong, please forgive me)

The professor delivers a wonderful exposition.If I understood correctly the geometry of our de Sitter space is encoded in the boundary thru entangled entropy and it has to “answer” Einstein equations.From that it follows that these equations are encoded in the CFT.So there’s two possibilities.Either the dna of a evolved primate is entangled with the entropy of the CFT or we’re witnessing intelligent design.My money is on the second possibility do I suspect foul play(both are entangled).

If you had a "decoherence ray" that changed the entanglement among particles in a region of space (a ball), and if that ray did not otherwise change the information content of that region, then the shape of the spacetime in that region would change. There are constraints on just how that would work, according to the lecture, but the even the possibility is astounding!

Two years ago I saw this video, but didn't know of quantum coherent theory, when a state can repeat its measurement, from a previous measurement. The reason how this measurement can be repeated (from infinite states) is due to gravity. Enabling Maldacena combine QM and GR for his ADS/CFT theory, for which he is rightly called the Einstein of modern physics. All credit to Mark van Raamsdonk, for taking to new heights of ADS/CFT theory, promising to discover how classical object have unitary evolution from Schrodinger's wave functions. I don't doubt that Mark did explain how quantum gravity follows from ADS/QFT, I think in the last two years of publishing his findings the complete theory of QM, with coherence and the boundary between quantum and classical, should have been able to explain how classical objects like star, planets, BH, etc are formed. I even believe QC function leading to life and consciousness should have been kickstarted by now.

This question may seem unrelated at first but Mark van Raamsdonk mentioned worm holes between two connected space times here goes. If some physicists disprove quantum entanglement by arguing "communication" between two entangled particles can't travel faster than the speed of light then is one counter argument that whatever "connects" those two particle may contain a very tiny "worm hole" if you will of space-time that is stretched so thinly it would compress the distance inside the "worm hole" thereby shrinking the real distance and thereby allowing faster than light travel, at least for information? Think of the proverbial "warp drive" that distorted space-time and allowed the Enterprise to travel at the speed of light. That of course is impossible given the energy needed to distort space-time in such a way. BUT if that space-time was super tiny and stretched out, say between two entangled particles then the energy needed to distort space-time would be achievable. In that case the star ship Enterprise would be a tiny packet of information. Essentially the distortion of space-time would mean the two particles are right next to each other and therefor the information passed between them is instantaneous when measured from the entangled particles' frame of reference even though from our perspective they might be millions of miles apart.

[Physical World, Truth World and Life‘s Consciousness: Correct Meaning of Entanglement in Quantum Mechanics] In quantum mechanics, the exact notion of entanglement does not mean that a physical signal is transmitted at an infinite speed, but always the truth (or reason, or absolutely right logic) is always present everywhere, regardless of the space and time of the physical world. There is no way that physical signal or any person’s consciousness can be transferred to remote places at infinite speed, but it is possible that the same logic is being physically carried out simultaneously in different places. If you know that the same (or correlated) logic is on processing in other places, you can think the physical signal or consciousness being delivered at an infinite speed. Imagine the coupled entities that are operating synchronously far away. If you check the state of one entity, you can decide the states of remote coupled entities. There should never be any confusion between physical and logical things. Understand exactly that the physical worlds are the cases in which some of the myriad of reasons are realized by means of material, and that the laws of physics for changing things include unchanging logic of mathematics. If you know that the most bottom of the physical world is the immaterial logic world, and on the above of it, the physical worlds of energy exist, and again on top of it, the worlds of quantum matter exist, you can understand the entanglement phenomena without any confusion. Moscow Aviation Institute - MAI - International Student's Page has given the following the thumbs up. It's all clearly correct. The Institute of Physics, Patna has now given the following writing the thumbs up. Excellent.♥️ THE MATHEMATICAL PROOF THAT ELECTROMAGNETISM/ENERGY IS GRAVITY IN A BALANCED FASHION IS SUCCESSFULLY DEMONSTRATED: "Mass"/ENERGY IS GRAVITY. ELECTROMAGNETISM/ENERGY IS GRAVITY. THE SUN AND THE EARTH are F=ma AND E=mc2, AS ELECTROMAGNETISM/ENERGY IS GRAVITY. E=mc2 is DIRECTLY AND FUNDAMENTALLY DERIVED FROM F=ma. F=ma AND E=mc2 PROVE that ELECTROMAGNETISM/ENERGY IS GRAVITY, AS ALL of SPACE is NECESSARILY ELECTROMAGNETIC/GRAVITATIONAL (IN BALANCE); AS ELECTROMAGNETISM/ENERGY IS GRAVITY. "Mass"/ENERGY IS GRAVITY. ELECTROMAGNETISM/ENERGY IS GRAVITY. Energy has/involves GRAVITY, AND ENERGY has/involves inertia/INERTIAL RESISTANCE. Gravity/acceleration involves BALANCED inertia/INERTIAL RESISTANCE, AS ELECTROMAGNETISM/ENERGY IS GRAVITY. This explains F=ma AND E=mc2, AS ELECTROMAGNETISM/ENERGY IS GRAVITY. SO, GRAVITATIONAL FORCE/ENERGY IS proportional to (or BALANCED with/as) inertia/INERTIAL RESISTANCE; AS ELECTROMAGNETISM/ENERGY IS GRAVITY. ACCORDINGLY, ALL of SPACE is NECESSARILY ELECTROMAGNETIC/GRAVITATIONAL (IN BALANCE); AS ELECTROMAGNETISM/ENERGY IS GRAVITY. "Mass"/ENERGY involves BALANCED inertia/INERTIAL RESISTANCE consistent WITH/AS what is BALANCED ELECTROMAGNETIC/GRAVITATIONAL FORCE/ENERGY, AS ELECTROMAGNETISM/ENERGY IS GRAVITY. GREAT !!! Gravity IS ELECTROMAGNETISM/ENERGY. ELECTROMAGNETISM/ENERGY IS GRAVITY. INDEED, A PHOTON may be placed at the center of THE SUN (as A POINT, of course); as the reduction of SPACE is offset by (or BALANCED with) the SPEED OF LIGHT; AS ELECTROMAGNETISM/ENERGY IS GRAVITY. GREAT. "Mass"/ENERGY IS GRAVITY. ELECTROMAGNETISM/ENERGY IS GRAVITY. ALL of SPACE is NECESSARILY ELECTROMAGNETIC/GRAVITATIONAL (IN BALANCE), AS ELECTROMAGNETISM/ENERGY IS GRAVITY. Great. The ability of thought to DESCRIBE OR RECONFIGURE sensory experience is ULTIMATELY dependent upon the extent to which THOUGHT IS SIMILAR TO sensory experience. (THOUGHTS ARE INVISIBLE.) Gravity IS ELECTROMAGNETISM/ENERGY. ELECTROMAGNETISM/ENERGY IS GRAVITY. Very importantly, outer "space" involves full inertia; AND it is FULLY INVISIBLE AND black. The perpetual motion of WHAT IS THE EARTH is NOW explained. GREAT !!! The idea that THE PLANETS are "falling" in what is "curved space" in RELATION to what is THE SUN is PROVEN to be NONSENSE. So, the falling objects must be considered in RELATION to WHAT IS THEN THE ORBITING EARTH. GREAT !!!!!!!!!! By Frank DiMeglio

58:38 so gravity isn't it's own thing anymore? What then did LIGO detect? A change in the amount of entanglement in quantum fields? Entanglement of what? If the entanglement inside one black hole already is maximal - when two of them merge, do they increase their entanglement even more by synchronising? While the gravitational wave that was released carries away / transfers energy, does it also lower entanglement on it's way out, does it flip spins or whatever qualia count as "entangelable"? This is all very confusing...

@Alephu5
@Alephu5 7 жыл бұрын
As far as I know there are no observable discrepancies between this picture and general relativity so it is not a competing theory. We wish to understand gravity as a phenomenon that arises from more fundamental ideas in the same way we now understand electromagnetism. The entanglement of each black hole is maximal, but before the merge they are loosely coupled so their composite system is not maximally entangled. During the merge the entanglement increases and completes with maximal entanglement of the composite system. To argue that spacetime is an emergent phenomenon from quantum fields, you must think of the field as a kind of information storage. Rather than thinking of oscillators side by side as we usually do, you must think of a kind of qubit SD card with no spatial relations but perhaps something like memory addresses to distinguish them. You entangle qubits by encoding correlations in this system such as forcing one memory address to depend on the value of another, and then the arrangement of correlations determines what we experience as 'spacetime geometry'. Intuitively this has some weight because we experience a close correlation between our feet and a nearby ball when they share the same spacetime. On the other hand, our feet cannot have much effect on balls far away or in the distant future although there is a long unbroken chain of cause-and-effect linking them. Bear in mind that this is a speculative subject built from sketches. Your question about the effect of gravitational waves on non-vaccuum entanglement is answerable in principle using the Ryn & Takayanagi conjecture. If no-one has written a paper on this the only way to find out is to do the calculations yourself.

We already do know, as the previous comment said. For starters, LQG starts by re-writing the gravitational field (connection, curvature) in terms of QFT type Yang-Mills field on a non-metric (background independent) spacetime. Then non-pertubative flux-loop techniques from QCD, are used to quantise along closed loops of flux (Wilson loops) finally ending with basis states of SU(2)xSU(2) spin states. A black hole as a trapped horizon as a boundary, with quantised flux entering per unit area. The trouble with this ADS/CFT version is that they can''t construct a real world black hole, only an extremal anti-deSitter space with supersymmetry.

So does this match Penrose’s conformal cosmology ? Are we in a fractal multiverse of black holes? Can entangled Villenkin tunneling from the sub plank space of an event horizon explain the creation of a cosmological gradient of vacuum spaces within the black hole? Can one think of the famous E8 structure as a very convoluted Feynman diagram explaining all particle interactions? Haha

Almost, Yes, Probably, and along with amplituhedron, again I believe yes. I made a statement similar to your line of questioning, in the comments of a Nima Arkani-Hamad lecture, and was told by a "mathematics student" that "You saying it has philosophical implications at all is like someone saying that a large integer does. This talk is literally just what is essentially a polytope that aids in calculation. Stop trying to mystify something trivial". I can tell you get it.

When you combine that with Wick rotations along a tessellated Penrose diagram overlayed on the surface of a black hole then I think that’s the whole picture now just need to understand the brain dmt etc it seems that pyramidal cells show hyper sphere packing patterns but the simplicial complexes of the brain are 8-d haven’t connected that yet

And I see your point about the polytope now any potential ER=EPR entanglement explanation of the surface singularities of the black hole would suggest some n dimension polytope inside. Incredible thanks

@@neurophilosophers994 I think you are correct that Wick rotations correlated to perturbations on the surface of, what would appear from the inside to be an infinitely distant boundary, ala holographic principle. The Hopf Fibration method of mapping hypersphere surfaces in n dimensions, suggests that entanglement could propagate between boundary surfaces. The scalar taken as a spatial dimension using conformal transformations, allows for expansion to be analogous to translation in scalar dimension, with associated time dilation. As to the connection to mind, Penrose and Hammeroff conjectured that the mechanism resides in the microtubules. Your suggestion that the pyramidal cells with their packing pattern is interesting. Regardless the mechanism, the individual neurons taken as a "quantum" oscillator in network with other oscillators, could become randomly and spontaneously entangled with similar oscillator network. Let's face it, the brain is a wetware quantum computer/simulator, regardless of whether we understand the mechanism.

What I would REALLY like is experiments that show, for example, control of gravitational force in this case by manipulation of entanglement... Else all the math.. epicycles... string theory .. too many black holes.... do not lose touch with reality. When people came up with the steam engine, the math came later. We need stuff that works.

So-quantum entanglement slows light (photons) by modifying Maxwell's coefficients... That makes sense that it increases the reluctance (inertial density) of space (vacuum)... and the slowing of light bends it like gravity, by Huygen's principle, (particles too as self-convolved photons... I received a sci.math/physics KOOK award for that ca 1995-8).

"we can JUST use entropy" => but why ? , my guess is, entropy is "good" because it is "additive", or, in other words, "extensive", so it has the property that if you double the size of the system then entropy doubles too ... it is linear in the size of the system (in classical TD), I guess there is some similar reason why entropy is "good" for measuring the "size" of entanglement, possibly, because if you combine two systems, then it makes sense that the "size" of the entanglement in the combined system is the sum of the "sizes" of entanglements in its parts ... my little guess... why "JUST" :) , well, I think this is the reason for the "JUST"

Could this make any sense? Black holes without singularity and systems below the Planck scales Reference: An observer falling into a black hole observing something that is also falling into a black hole just before it: If an outside observer never observes an in-falling observer ever fall into the black hole, any particle entering the black hole should feel nothing else to be inside the black hole but only itself; because just before it entered the black hole, everything that was about to enter the black before it froze at the event horizon, so there is nothing inside the black hole but just that particle. This would mean that there would be no singularity. Second option-Now let’s say that it would feel everything to be normal-that is see its predecessors fall into the black hole and that only those outside observers accelerating away from the black hole see things freezing on the surface of the black hole. For that to happen, when the same observer is moving towards the black hole, observes things going in; but when accelerating away observes things clumping up on the horizon. If that were to happen, every time the observer went back and forth the clumping would freeze and unfreeze. Third-Or if an outside observer maintaining a constant distance from the black hole is the one that observes the clumping. When the observer moved away, if the things unfroze, entering the black hole; relativistic predictions would be incorrect. Inside the black hole: I like to talk about the first interpretation-the violation of the extrapolation of the geometry inside the black hole-that there is no singularity. If we add some definitions to the idea, it looks familiar to a question, we’ve been asking and the incomprehensible answer we’ve been getting. First, the observer sees no non-virtual particles. However, high energy virtual particles pop into and out of existence frequently. When one of such particle deforms space-time, it forms temporary gravitational influence on the “only one” non-virtual particle-“observer” before shortly ceasing to exist and no more influencing the non-virtual particle. Another virtual particle comes into existence somewhere inside the black hole and temporarily pulls the non-virtual particle in a different direction (could be the same) with different intensity depending on their relative positions. As many virtual particles pop into existence, the particle is pulled around and pulled in some other direction while some virtual particles cease to exist and some other new virtual particles come into existence. The non-virtual particle is pulled around inside the black hole in this field of virtual particles; never quite achieving the influence to escape the black hole. It could be helpful to imagine the idea as a yo-yo being pulled back and forth, allowing the movement in all directions and the intensities to be different. The same idea can be described in a different way. The space-time inside the black hole is a high energy deformation in the portion of space-time where, as virtual particles pop into and out of existence, powerful gravitational waves move the non-virtual particle around, inside the black hole. The gravitational waves are the result of virtual particles coming into and out of existence, producing different patterns of gravitational strong fields. Explaining a very similar answer; and amazing consequences Length below the Planck length leads to answers that there should be black holes everywhere below the Planck length. While that might tell us that we don’t understand it so well, it could very well be telling us a different story this whole time. Maybe the reason systems below the Planck scales give rise to black hole scenarios is because what happens inside a black hole is very similar to what happens inside a Planck length-what happens to space-time. Below the Planck scale, space-time is not empty and virtual particles coming into existence and going out of existence make up the vacuum energy field, as well accepted. Every point in space-time is stretched, as virtual particles come into existence as the vacuum energy field fluctuation. This is exactly like the first definition we established about what happens inside the black hole. The high energy virtual particles coming into and out of existence inside the black hole, cause gravitational influence because the gravitational waves are localized. Similarly, the virtual particles coming into an out of existence in vacuum field, stretch space-time at a lot of points (theoretically all points) and in a lot of all directions (theoretically all directions), creating the effect observed as Dark Energy. There is one more definition we need to add here. As, the virtual particles inside the black holes come into and out of the existence, the virtual particles coming into and out of existence that make up the vacuum energy field-do so at inside the Planck-scales, let’s say inside the Planck volume. Since, the two phenomenon are extremely similar, that is why we get an answer that there should be black holes below the Planck scales, when we compute the prediction of our theories. But more than being similar, the two phenomena could be two observations of a single phenomenon. The Hawking Radiation and conservation of information It could very well be the case that the matter eaten by black holes in our universe appear as virtual particles in space-time outside the black holes; and that explaining why “inside the Planck scale phenomenon” and “inside the black hole phenomenon” are the same thing. Now the way this model can elegantly describe the hawking radiation or quantum tunneling as the property of the particles inside the black holes to appear outside the black holes as quantum vacuum field fluctuations-(the reason such systems are described as quantized at the Planck scales can be better discussed by explaining the Schwarzschild radius); And this does not violate information conservation. And black holes turn out to be converting matter into vacuum energy diluting the energy in our universe. An unanswered question: revisiting group splitting All along this time, we did not answer why the particle inside the black hole observes no other non-virtual particle. This idea is described using the splitting of a group; the central idea in this discussion. A black hole has the following property. Before entering the black hole, some matter can interact with each other in space and are described as being in the same system in the “volume neighborhood” or less seriously-space. A black hole can split this system into many systems that cannot interact in the “volume neighborhood”. According to the idea of group reconfiguration, space-time is the geometry of group configurations while volume neighborhood or dimension is one such configuration. However, the particles may interact in “other dimensions or neighborhoods”, and hence appear as virtual particles to each other in the volume neighborhood, and are able to convey gravitational influence as they continue to have defined geometries of group configurations- or less seriously interactions with space-time. According to the evolving dynamics of group reconfiguration, the virtual particles come into existence and cease to exist. But what happens when all black holes run out of food to eat? The universe could be left with just vacuum energy field fluctuations with virtual particles popping into and out of existence. Our universe’s geometry to interact in volume-neighborhood could be gone while the energy of our universe (as particles) may continue to interact in other configurations and neighborhoods. Virtual particles may form real particles. The universe could split into different systems or combine with some other system. The universe could lose its quantization as black holes disappear taking away with them the vacuum energy fluctuation making the system continuous. The continuity could be disturbed when something else interacts with our system in a big bang.
