Hey Joe, great talk! I also had an emergent question at the end of this lecture. That is, the event horizon and hawking radiation. You have a cutting off from normal spacetime at the event horizon, releasing the other particle. Now lets say you have a spacecraft, very near the speed of light. The surface of the ship can be considered the event horizon of this perturbation the same as gravity. You cut off one of these photons, or particles, and carry it away. This heats up your spacecraft, and seems to be higher in spectrum, than the released hawking radiation. This only happens near light speed, because of quantum fluctuations and temporal limits.

My thought experiment (and results): First graph Gravity in terms of radius. When greater than 1 [gravimetric unit] Gravity is gradual (mostly effected by mass), but when the radius is less than 1 [gravimetric unit], Gravity increase exponentially as radius decreases. The assumption is atoms are smaller than 1 (and figuring out this distance, either it be static of variable reference a mass, will likely be important). Thus gravitational force in an atom increases exponentially as you approach the nucleus of an atom (and the inverse, Gravity decreases exponentially as you leave the nucleus), making Gravity the strong force at sizes less than 1. What does this mean? Why don't electrons get pulled into the nucleus by Gravity? If electrons and the nucleus have opposite charges, then why doesn't EM pull them together (as opposites attract)? There's another force at play here. Enter my theory of general repulsion (the weak force). To explain repulsion, first think of a filled, closed balloon. What causes the balloon's shape? The elasticity of the balloon vs the enegeticness of contents pushing against the balloon (which appears repulsive). Also note, you can change the shape (repulsive force) of the balloon by simply changing tempurature. Reduce temperature, repulsive force reduces, balloon shrinks (and the inverse). What's this mean at the quantum level? Assume the nucleus exerts a similar repulsive (weak) force. Gravity is trying to squish the atom, but repulsion is trying to tear it apart. The least massive subatomic particle (electron) would be likely to recieve the most effect (as the Gravity between the smallest mass compared to the rest of the combined nuclear mass is the weakest in the case of the electron). Thus the electron gets repulsed from the nucleus by the weak force. However, the repulsive (weak) force deteoriates much faster with radius than Gravity (strong force), and the point these forces equalize is where the electron will lie (the electron cloud). This means a few things: Electrons don't need to "orbit" the nucleus (as in general relative), they simply slide along the point where the forces Gravity and Repulsion balance. "Positive charge" of nucleus is explain by attraction of Gravity. "Negative charge" of electron is explain by Repulsion. (Thus, instead of thinking Positive/Negative charge, think Attractive (Gravitronic)/Repulsive Force). Remember how I mentioned temperature with repulsion earlier. That would be my first test, and finding such information reliably is difficult, but it appears it's been done. Heating an atom (with a lazer) causes the electron cloud to expand ("higher orbit"). Increasing tempurature increases repulsion pushing electrons further from nucleus. (I don't have source off hand, but data from such will likely help in finding the equation for general repulsion (as well as gravimetric 1 unit mentioned above.) The following thought experiment: Big Bang So, without actual equation of Repulsion, the assumption still lies that it changes exponentially with radius, similar to, but weaker than Gravity. As mass increases, compression from Gravity increases, tempurature increases, thus repulsion increases. Similar increases lead to similar balance of electron clouds. However, think of Awesome massiveness (if a black hole is super massive, the mass I speak of now will leave you in awe comparably, this is Awesome massive). With such Awesome mass, such that the radius exceeds gravimetric 1, then you have Repulsion still exponiential based on radius, but Gravity is no longer exponential above a radius of gravimetric 1, leading to instability, and the Repulsive (weak) overpowering the Gravitronic (strong) force. Gravity will no longer be able to hold the mass together, the Repulsion turns into explosion, Big Bang. Of topic (another thought experiment): My second test/observation deals with electrons appearance to teleport. Do they actually teleport, or does one electron fall as another gets repulsed (which would happen at speeds much faster than "orbital" sliding). The idea is that other "smallest particles (electron)" reside in the nucleus, not repulsed as the balance between Gravity and Repulsion is satisfied by the electrons that are already in the cloud, but will get repulsed if one of the other electrons fall (thus one falling and another rising giving the appearance of teleportation if you failed to observe the fall and rise.)

Objects get indefinitely closer but never penetrate the black-hole horizon due to finite speed limit (c) and infinite gravitational time dilation (time nearly stops according to ANY remote observer's clock). So all entropy (quantum states of matter and energy falling into it) remains confined to the horizon. No wonder each bit of quantum information stored in everything that ever fell into this black-hole stays on its horizon. Hence the counter-intuitive conclusion that information bits are spread in the area and not the volume of any black-hole - at least for everyone else who is outside that black-hole.

No the arrows are in the right direction. It's a convention in circuit diagrams to show current in a circuit flowing from + to -. It would be more intuitive to show electrons flowing from - towards + but it just isn't done that way.

It's just an old electrical engineering notation, in practice it doesn't make a difference what way the current is flowing, so they just supposed the current flows from positive to negative. Fundamentally, current flows from - to +

in practice it does make a difference. and fundementally electron flow and current flow go in opposite direction, current flows from +ve to -ve and electrons flow from -ve to +ve (because they are -vely charged), current flow refers to the direction that the holes move - and by holes I mean spare valence slots (in now +ve net charge atoms), this is why electrons move across a pn junction in silicon from the n to the p doped silicon (p doped has an abundance of free holes). for a conductor to conduct it also needs to be able to free electrons thus creating a hole for another electron to fill and the movement of these holes is the opposite direction to the electrons. in semiconductor theory it is important to understand which way the current (holes) and electron flows are travelling because both actually move not just electrons. another reason why it is important to understand the direction of the flow is because the induced magnetic field is created at right angles to the electron flow aswell with the field rotating clockwise around a current flow moving away from, or electron flow moving towards the observer. there is a good reason why the "old" notation was kept but for a very simple circuit with a lamp, battery and switch the direction of the flows aren't important but anything more complex than that and it starts to become important - even the twist direction on a dual core cable carring current becomes important for emi/noise suppression because it influences how the induced magnetic fields interact esp. in ac circuits. see electromagnetism (esp magnetic field around a conductor) or inductance and semiconductor theory and you'll see what i mean. also in an electrolytic cell (like a battery) current flow also represents the the flow of +vely charged metal ions which also do indeed move (why a battery goes flat)

Unfortunately, physicist’s will often address a general audience as though they are speaking to toddlers. It’s certainly a red flag when he instructs the audience to think of the Dirac equation as a piece of art. That’s like a mechanic describing an Internal combustion engine by comparing it to a hamster running around a wheel. Needless to say, his description of hawking radiation using virtual particles is nonsensically simplified. However, the alternative accurate description would involve working out the consequences of quantum field theory for an observer in curved space time.

WOW. If you are interested in Quantum Gravity and steps toward a "theory of everything" (on that unites special relativity, general relativity, and quantum mechanics), but are a layperson who has only read about bits and pieces - this presentation is outstanding. The presenter walks you through a a VERY coherent picture of where many physisit are not only with string theory (or something perhaps similar - I am unconvinced with string thoery, since there are so many ways to solve string theory and it does seem to be a devide by zero type of issue), but quantum gravity, and how they made this amazing progress. Have NOT seen a better presentation that only requires a interested laypersons understanding of the three theories, on where many are headed. The presenter really takes his time so that the audience can follow the path of the combination of experimental results and weeding out issues/possible solutions, through thought experiments... I regret some there that have to add a comment like "see God didn't do it" as how and the heck, if their is a creator, does one determine, how he did it? Science and the idea that a MIND must behind it all are actually moved closer by incorporating quantum thoery, which finally gives determinism a knife through the heart - why make this political?? It is simply man's attempt to understand reality, not that it was not created or not...GEEZE. So, someone who has thought about this question I am posting and solved it, please explain it to me. Hawking Radiation.....So particle / anti-particle pair are created from nothing, one falls into black hole and one escapes. We are to believe that somehow this decreases the overall mass of the black hole? It always gains one particle or one anti-particle right? And it is .5 probability (50/50) of gaining a particle or anti-particle, right? In other words half of the times a particle and another half of the times an anti-particle , right? So, by simple math, either the black hole is always increasing in total particles and thus mass , or there is a 50/50 mix of particle / anti-particles entering the black hole which will eventually annihilate each other anyways so zero contribution to mass of black hole, right? Why is everyone giving the explanation of Hawking Radiation when it is clearly in error? Or is there something missing here? As far as I understand , particles and their respective anti-particles have the same mass?

There is a problem with the conclusions of this paper regarding Hawking radiation. The description of Hawking radiation relies on the quantum theory assumption that particle pairs come into and out of existence for a very short time. This is allowed in quantum theory due to the uncertainty principle as long as the time is very short. The problem is that if Hawking radiation really happened then we would be violating the law of conservation of energy because the particle pairs exist for an indefinite time with one particle falling into the event horizon and one radiating away. Hawking radiation has never been observed and it is reasonable that if the theory were true then we should see the Hawking Radiation and we do not. The fact that we do not see Hawking Radiation is a strong indicator that the idea of quantum fluctuations is wrong. Quantum fluctuations have never been observed directly and we need to look at the results which depend on the idea of quantum fluctuations for an alternative explanation. For each particle "emitted," doesn't the mass/energy of the black hole decrease by a corresponding amount? I thought that's why they talked about black holes "evaporating" (38:00). It seems that conservation of energy would be preserved in that case.

Let me clarify. The idea of Hawking Radiation is based on the quantum theory concept of virtual particles. The idea of virtual particles is that a particle and its antiparticle can come into existence for a very short time and then annihilate without violating the law of conservation of energy. The theory uses Heisenberg's uncertainty principle for mass and energy to claim that the violation of the law of conservation of energy is allowed as long as the time interval is very short. We can imagine these virtual particles at some distance from the event horizon and all is well according to the theory. But come close to the event horizon and the idea of Hawking radiation is that one particle goes into the black hole and one does not. So there is no annihilation and conservation of energy is violated. So, it is true that if you take the outcome as being the radiation of a new particle and apply conservation of energy to the whole system you would assume that the black hole must have lost energy. My hypothesis that Dark Matter is not a weakly interactive massive particle (WIMP), but maybe is a deformation of space-time by which the curvature of space-time itself is the cause of the gravitational effect. Gravity is the consequence of the curvature of space-time when mass is present. It may be possible that the structure of space-time itself could be warped without the presence of mass. So, how did this warping occur? We believe this warping of space-time occurred during the extreme conditions present during inflation. Space-time has been shown to react like a fabric by warping, twisting, and propagating independent of mass. These properties have been proven with observations of gravitational lensing, frame dragging, and now gravitational waves. Fabrics can be stretched, pressured, and/or heated to the point of deformation. Such extreme conditions were all present during inflation, so it is plausible that space-time’s elastic nature could have hit its yield point and permanently deformed. Therefore, if gravity is the consequence of the warping of space-time, and fabrics can be permanently deformed, then a deformation could create a gravitational effect independent of mass. Thus, the unidentified dark "matter" that seems to be so elusive to modern science may not be matter at all but merely warped deformities causing gravitational effects. We have a prediction using gravitational lens mapping to prove Dark Matter isn’t a weakly interacting massive particle, but instead is a floating fixed pocket of warped geodesics in space-time geometry causing gravity wells.

I like the balloon example, but for different reasons. If you change the temperature of the contents of the balloon, the volume changes as the repulsion from it's energy changes (vs the elastic force of the latex). The same way an atom's electron cloud expands when heated (by lazer). Temperature is a variable that will likely need inclusion in quantum Gravity (I feel that's a big part of what's missing), and will further explain why such physics seem different at extreme temperatures. General Repulsion, a function of mass, radius, and temperature (at the least).

If your mass is 85 kg and you fell into a black-hole of mass M1 (new mass M1+85) that later merged into another black-hole of mass M2 with final mass (M1+M2), then 85 kg worth of energy escaped from the merger as gravitational waves, and so you pretty much successfully escaped from the first black hole. So yes - light (EM-wave) may not escape from a black-hole but you can (as G-wave) :-) !!!

This man is fumbling in the dark because he is using reasoning by historical analogy in conjunction with the hypothetical existence of one-dimensional objects in a three-dimensional space(whatever that is suppose to mean physically!). In short, he is "huffing and puffing" in a way that Maxwell and Dirac were not! His attempt at historical analogy falls flat on its face in my opinion. But again, just an opinion.
