Tension structures are generally more stable when under tension. This design would be a rigid structure if the center links were replaced with a turnbuckle.

Came here to say this too. I’m curious how much tension this design will take to fail.
@user-gn4bc4lv3l4 жыл бұрын
Word, he should be using u-bolts drilled through the frame on at least the center chain so he can add tension. He could then toss those ugly and expensive locking links and flat plates. The whole thing would “float” better. Totally stealing it though. Really cool idea.

Interesting concept. If the chains on the sides were diagonal, you would achieve cross bracing (triangulation) and the table would be rock solid. Then you could likely get away with a single turn buckle (or some other length adjustment device) in the middle supporting the vertical load. Since the whole structure would be in tension at that point, it would also be silent and rock solid.
@Familytreewoodworks4 жыл бұрын
I’ve been looking into doing a tensegrity table and was thinking the same thing. Or having more than one diagonal chain in the middle would do the trick as well. I’d like to do a large dinner table, but wobble would be a deal breaker.

Just a thought, to add tension. Instead of using this screw down hooks, on the under side of the upper support, add a recess and drill though and use a eye bolt, which would be plenty to add tension, and not change the look too much

Well... Your supports for the center chain were done wrong... i made a table similar like this of my own design (no video) but think about the bottom frame with the upside down V, that supports the weight of the table top, for much more strength and stability you should cut the tops of each side that upside V with a level line, and the the small board holding the chain could have set across and on 'top' of those 2 angle support boards, now you would have the strength of the whole wooden board pulling down on the supports (instead on relying on the screws put in the sides of that board...) You do the other one the same way and it's equaly as strong... I can turn my table over and it's just as strong, oh weigh 240 and can sit on it... mine is more like a stool... Also, you need a way to tension the 4 outside chains for stability... I will make you a video tomorrow... I like your video style...!!! THIMBS UP...!!! CHEERS

Looks good. A few suggestions. First - you are using way too much glue. When you clamp you get lots of squeeze out. (wasted glue). You want just enough to join the surfaces. A THIN layer will do it. Second - the chains are way too loose. I would next time make the wood be slightly long on your cut. When you put the wood together, this will force the chain to be under tension. This gives a much better look and makes the table more usable. In its current state its nice to look at, but when you put anything on it, the table moves like water and that isn't good.
@DandyLionCreations4 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much for your advice. I definitely need to get my glue under control I'm a little overzealous! When you say making the frame longer I'm taking it you mean to taper the chains out to try and stretch them more? I think if I was to attempt another Tensegrity I would find away of keeping the frames at there final height so I could measure the chains better or even use a turnbuckle in the centre support for fine tuning. I'll definetley take your advice on board 👌 Thank you for watching 👍

Excellent build, I would love to see this done with so much tension that the most the table would move would be to vibrate like a tuning fork if struck. you could use two turnbuckle style long nuts on the top link of the middle chain so as to not be so obvious. To add strength use triangles (top and bottom) to hold the centre chain, that would contain its force/tension and prevent it from spreading to other points of the table.

Add a U bolt straight through the bottom of the arm coming from the table top. If you thread a bolt onto it you can pull the chain taught and not have to find a way to stretch the chain. Would become a lot sturdier from a $3 investment. Also I would love to see x shaped chain bracing and see how that would stop it from wobbling as much. It could become a really sturdy table with the right tensioning and patterns of chain.

I like the design of those center supports, they leave enough open space to show off the "floating" appearance. I've found a lot of tensegrity structures throw enough bulk around the supports that it barely looks like it's floating, or the support is very crowded. This one's nice an clean.

Thank you! I really appreciate the support. I was quite happy with how it turned out. obviously there are some improvements to be made but it was fun and it does its job! Thank you for watching 👍

To increase lateral stability and make that sweet table even more mind blowing, you'll need four more chains, four more anchors, and eight more coupler links. You'll be creating a "V" inverting the perpendicular to resemble the letter "A" and making a "V-A-V-A" pattern if you walk around the table. the center chain should be adjustable for tension. Maybe wood/machine threaded studs with nuts and washers?Nice design! About the only way the table could be any stronger would be if the center braces were arches. The glass top will make a great wow factor! Liked and subscribed!

Make the tolerances a little tighter and screw in the last center chain mount on to tighten everything up. ie shorten the center links. Then mark and drill the holes for the center chain mount. But put those screws in last. Pause at 11:25 for a still shot of which screws should go in last.... Hope this helps.

Nice! One thing I would've done differently is the base and table frames, I would've cut the pieces at an angle. Then when you attached the chain anchors, the screws go into both pieces of wood and you're not relying only on the glue. Still it's a great table and looks nice.

I have started trying to improve my mitres ect so if I did another iteration that is definitely something I would go for 👌 Thanks for the advice 👍

Very cool build. Do you think if you made the base a little larger than the top it might be a little more stable? Definitely considering building an all metal version. Thanks for the idea.

I think the main issue is tension I needed to add more of it onto the outside chains and maybe cross brace the chains instead of horizontal. Definetley give it a go! Such a fun build good luck and thanks for watching 👍
