@ yes but it's always nice to hear the proper words to describe things, in the other videos I saw, they never say what tensegritiy means, also this is only 3 min long, compared to the 15 min on other videos with more craftsmanship focus, I guess there is a reason why you clicked in this video.

This is a good explanation of how compression members and tensile members can be made to work together to produce a stable structure. The problem is though that it isn't fully stable, since the rectangular configuration permits considerable side sway which is unacceptable if the structure is to be a useful table instead of just a novelty. All that is necessary is to use the stability of tensile members arranged in triangles and all will be well.

So what you are saying is the middle string is taking the force of the strings?
@funbygum4 жыл бұрын
Yes, the center string is carrying the entire weight of the table top. Essentially it is a one legged table but the corner strings prevent the table top from tipping.

Thank you. I call this interplay of two opposing actions Binal-Dynamics. Here, compression balances tension, and vice versa. Sidenote: This table is never actually stable. It’s fluctuating extremely rapidly between falling and recovery.

so all the loading pressure comes to the middle string, right? As i understand, because of the middle string the weight of upper surface and all what is on it will be tensioning it.
@funbygum4 жыл бұрын
Yes, the center string holds the entire weight of the top platform (tension). The wire attached to the top is hanging from the wire attached to the bottom by the center string.

I have no problem understanding how it works, but what I want to know is, does tensegrity work for any other configuration? I have been looking for quite some time and the only examples I can find are all the same configuration. Even in this example, even though he uses more strings, it is the same configuration. You can even see how one of the strings on the table isn't doing anything, just hanging there limp. You claim there are many configurations on the web, but I haven't seen any after searching for many hours.

If you cut the strings on the for corners would the table still "stand"?
@funbygum4 жыл бұрын
No the table will not stand because it will be unstable. Without the corner strings, it would be like having a one-legged table (center string only) and the table would collape without and way to offset the unstable table top.

Essentially the ropes at the four corners are acting as guy ropes for stability,, take away the four ropes and the top would still stay in position,, although it would fall to one side because of lack of balance. A nice visual trick.
