I love how they tackled the "chosen one" trope in this episode. It establishes right away that this isn't your typical fantasy story and that Luz has to earn every outcome. It's also a great lesson for kids to work hard for what they want and to make their own destiny.

“Measure twice, cut once” is the golden rule of woodworking. When you cut a piece of wood, you can’t undo it. It’s cut. Woodworkers have thus made it top priority to make sure their measurements are always accurate. You measure once to mark off where you need to cut, then measure again to make sure you marked the right spot (alternatively, and this is how I learned it, you measure once before cutting, you cut it, then you measure again to make sure you did it right and won’t have to start over because you cut off JUUUUUST too much, making the pieces not fit together).
@isaacevilman75866 ай бұрын
The reason Eda said it to Luz is because it’s just a good adage. Always make sure to double-check your work, because you may not be able to undo its results. When drama happens in a friend group, always make sure to double check the facts, because taking action off of faulty information can cause permanent emotional damage. When making a big purchase, always make sure that you have sufficient need/want and that you can afford it, because it might leave you in an undesirable situation if you can’t. When doing anything that can have long-lasting consequences, always make sure you’re working with the correct facts, because you may not be able to undo what you’ve done.

Back once again for VA facts! Not many this time, but still giving the VA’s. Arin Hanson returns, this time as the Sea monster, the sword, Chris, and the cat that disintegrated in Eda’s hand. Robin Atkin Downes makes his first appearances in Owl House, voicing Adegast and the Centaur. You might know Downes best for Davy Jones in Kingdom Hearts 3, Hoot Loop in Skylanders, and what I know him best for: The Medic from Team Fortress 2. Nevereth is voiced by the late Billy Kametz. He was an anime dub VA who voiced Macaque in Lego Monkie Kid, Roman Torchwick in RWBY, and Inteleon from Pokémon. He was dating Erika Lindbeck (Loona, as well as a future role in this show) before his passing in 2022.

If Temmie was on the Boiling Isles...would that make it more creepy that it already is? XD This episode is so ridiculously over the top with all its fantasy-hero-tropes only to smack you in the face at the end with the realization that this show is nothing like those typical stories. It is a fantasy world with magic but is actually very relatable with its scam artists and weird people and the law enforcement that suppresses individuality (like the poor fanfic girl from the first episode). And Luz was ostracized in the human world as well. So it is no wonder that she wants to stay in a seemingly magical place where people might be more like her and wants to believe she is chosen and special. Who of us did not want to escape to such a place once. Plus she is a young teenager. I believe at this point in the show she is about 13-14 years old and is trying to figure out who she is and still has a lot of lessons to learn. Also Eda is the best sassy witch ever. She might act like she does not care a lot and is just an opportunistic rebel but she went right into the monster's trap to help Luz. So she is not a bad person. And Hooty is indeed voiced by Alex Hirsch! Very perceptive of you XXXD

Success depends on three main factors: luck, opportunity, and hard work. Being the "chosen one" gives you instant opportunity, but you know how else you can get opportunities? By other people -- even normal people -- taking a chance on you. Offering you an opportunity. Helping you out. You don't need a predestined path to success as long as someone else is willing to help you, and you're willing to work for it. (Both are equally important: hard work means nothing if no one will give you enough of a chance, and that's often forgotten with the "pull yourself up by your bootstraps" mentality. We *need* to help each other out; that's vital to society and humanity.) Luz can succeed because she got lucky enough to stumble upon the Boiling Isles, she's willing to work for it, *and* because Eda is giving her a chance and supporting her. If she'd run into anyone else her first time through the door... she might have just had her dreams crushed immediately.

And to think, this is just going to keep getting better as it goes. Once you hit season 2, from then on it's all killer and no filler. The main reason why is admittedly kinda depressing, but it's nice that the show's pacing stays strong and engaging from then on.
@TyrannoNoddy6 ай бұрын
I think Hooty's voice is literally meant to be Alex Hirsch's bad impression of Mickey Mouse, lol. Also I think the original pitch for the show did want to aim it at an older audience (the beta designs have them be all like college aged for one, and there's more edge to them), but Disney of course wanted something that was for younger viewers so the characters were aged down and the show became less serious. I think that's how it went anyway.

And it's very telling about the quality of the show that even at its absolute worst (which I'd argue is 1x8), it's still fine. It just feels like a massive drop because the bad episodes are like a 5/10 when the rest of the series fluctuates between an 8 and a 10.
@Rork3106 ай бұрын
@@12thLevelSithLord Yeah I can't really bring myself to get mad at Once Upon a Swap. It's harmless, has some good gags. It just doesn't do anything to advance the story. Under ratted episode but one of the more important messages for children and adults. Don’t let someone manipulate you by telling you everything you want to hear. Periodically take stock of your situation and see if what you are being told makes sense and matches the reality other’s can see. When people talk about animated shows teaching important lessons they often mean big heavy adult topics like bigotry. Topics the writer’s can’t always handle well. While that is nice and all i find this topic unaddressed by shows despite how important it is. Most kids hear some version of strangle danger as well as go seek a trusted adult without much context. What if you pick and adult who tells you everything you want to hear. An adult who tells you they can give you what you want you just have to climb into their white van. In short i like the way they approach this moral. Ans i think it is a good story for kids and teens to see. I will now get off the soap box.

The whole "Chosen One" narrative is also a license for people (both characters in a story and people in real life) to sit on their asses and not do anything or contribute in any meaningful way. The prevalence of Chosen One narratives in fiction is encouraging a tendency to passivity and fatalism. Why should you get off your ass and help with solving a problem? Our stories are constantly telling us that problems aren't fixed by collective action; they're solved by lone heroes who are fated to do so and gifted by providence with the tools and powers they need. That's "Chosen One" stuff, and you can just sit back and let _them_ handle it. This is why in _Harry Potter_ all the adults - even the ones who are ostensibly "helping" - are completely and utterly useless. They're ineffective at best, and actively _hindering_ Harry at worst - and the majority is just passively allowing things to happen, waiting around for a teenager to fix it. It's all in service of the idea that _only Harry_ has the power to fix things… which makes it _his responsibility,_ and everyone else is off the hook. It's not just lazy writing, but a toxic narrative, subconsciously promoting a terrible mindset.
