This actually worried the show’s creator Alex Hirsch so much because he really wanted the reveal to be a huge shocker for the fans. So what he did, he made a freaking fake leak screenshot of McGucket being the author and it’s what made the fans believe that the stan brother theory was no longer true. And once the episode finally came out, it really got the fans by surprise 😆 And ford, my gosh what an awesome addition to the show! And jk Simmons being his VA makes it more better 😁

"Not What he Seems" was quite the gamechanger that changed the course of _Gravity Falls_ and later episodes of Season 2 forever. The FBI agents led by FBI Nick Offerman arrest Stan before he was going to tell The Twins The truth, leading to the chain of events when the Pine Twins and also Soos discover the dark secrets of Grunkle Stanford Pines and the Secrets and lies he's been hiding. Now I can understand that Dipper had the right to being furious and angry at Grunkle Stan for lying to him, Mabel and Soos and everyone and the secrets he's been keeping, although I hate to be blunt but Dipper was literally overreacting and "jumping the gun" that the Portal was a "Doomsday" bomb that was set to destroy Gravity Falls and the world while telling Mabel to shut it off and almost was agreeing with Nick Offerman and the FBI Agents and especially disowning Grunkle Stan. Now was it wrong that Grunkle Stan changed names and especially kept secrets and lies from the Twins? Yes Was it wrong that Grunkle Stan stole Government waste to power the Portal in the Bunker? Yes However, I have to agree on Stan that most of his actions weren't out of malicious intent, yeah he lied and was a scam artist but as he said, Stan was going to tell the Pine Twins the truth before the FBI Agents apprehend him and that the portal he constructed in the basement was to bring back the author of the Journals, later revealed to be his long lost brother, so I'm honestly glad Mabel didn't press the button and reluctantly trusted Grunkle Stan's words because if she had done it, Grunkle Stan would've been arrested, the Author of the Journals (his long lost brother) would've been stuck on the other side and the later episodes wouldn't have existed completely. I also really appreciate "Tale of Two Stans" as it explores the backstory and relationship between Stanford (the author of the Journals) and Stanley (Grunkle Stan’s real name) as brothers that dealt with fractured-strained relationships and heartbreak along with how Grunkle Stan took over the Mystery Shack. Lastly, I didn’t realize when I first watch this episode that Stanford and Stanley’s father was voiced by friggin Jonathan Banks who played Mike Ehrmantraut in _Breaking Bad_ and _Better Call Saul._ Literally whoever got him and especially Nick Offerman and Nathan Fillion on _Gravity Falls_ be it Alex Hirsch or the voice director of the show must had a lot of money and negotiations to bring these actors particularly Nick Offerman and Nathan Fillion on board considering their A-list status.

But Neil Degrasse Tyson doesn’t compare to Nick Offerman, Nathan Fillion and Jonathan Banks, especially the former two a-list actors appearing in a Disney animated series and their first and only time that I see Nick and Nathan participating in a Disney animated cartoon. Literally the only Disney animated shows that could possibly rival this or is on par with the A-list guest stars that appeared in _Gravity Falls_ are _Phineas and Ferb, Randy Cunningham, Tangled the Series_ and the _DuckTales (2017 series)_ and in the latter series, that had Giancarlo Esposito.

Ya, and the fact he took the risk of turning the portal back on when Bill could've gotten out, Stan was just lucky that only Ford got out. But, if it weren't for Stanley, Ford would've never found out more about Bill and his weaknesses, he would've never meet the oracle who helped him put the metal plate in his head, and he would've never been able to finish the quantum destabiliser.

I still remeber watching this when this first aired was so shocked and satisfied with the reveal of the author, Alex Hirsch planned this out from the very beginning not only to truly have the perfect climax to start the story's endgame but we have all the evidence before this episode came out. 1.) first episode in the last scene we understand that Stan is hiding something we don't know what but clearly it's a purposal move that Alex Hirsch did. and in the intro in the last frame where you see the cipher wheel there's a code in the right and solving it says "Stan is not what he seems" so now we have the idea that something is being kept locked away. 2.) in the 3rd episode we see that stan is very attached to the wax figure of himself so he feels like he's hoping to see someone. 3.) the Mystery shack itself and details of how the journals are being layed out. The 3rd journal is buried not super far away from the Mystery Shack and while we don't know how Gideon got the 2nd one we get the idea that he's just as clueless as all of us are 4.) The big one with the hidden room that was covered in wall paper, This is someone's room but we don't know who. Then we see Stan take the glasses away clearly this is someone's but who as well. All of these big pieces of evidence that before getting this reveal tells us that the Author is someone close and is literally under their noses the whole time. This is one of the best reveals of all time.

The snowy house when they were time traveling, Stan's reaction to his wax self being murdered, the fact he knew nothing about the electron carpet, the fact that Gideon and everyone else calls him Stanford when his name is Stanley, etc. “I’m alone. I can swear for real! Son of a-“ I’m so glad Disney allowed that. If Ford sounds familiar, it’s because he’s voiced by JK Simmons! Omni-Man from Invincible, Cave Johnson from Portal 2, Kai from Kung Fu Panda 3, and of course, J. As someone who had to wait for each new episode growing up, the suspense was killing me. The only criticism I have is that one of the best characters shows up 3/4ths into the show. I don't expect a revival or sequel, but I still want one. I respect Alex Hirsch wanting to conclude it, but I feel robbed by how little screentime JK Simmons/Ford gets.
