So, awkward confession: When this show started I was in high school, but when I started high school I told myself to grow up & stop watching cartoons. However, I heard a few classmates talking about Gravity Falls, so I decided to sit down 1 day & watch it. Unfortunately, Not What He Seems was the very 1st episode I watched since it was airing new the night I decided to finally start watching the show. So, not only did I get spoiled for the 1st Season & half of the 2nd, but then the 2nd Season went on hiatus for half a year. On the bright side, I binged watch the rest of the show & fell in love with it, but I was still spoiled since so much of the show led up to this moment.

one of my favorite pieces of dialogue in the entire show is when Soos, Mabel and Dipper go down the stairs behind the vending machine and they says “It’s like something out of a video game… or a dream… or a nightmare” that line alone is a perfect representation of the three characters and how they view the world around them. It’s so small and often over looked but i love it

Mabel's "I trust you" line is quite possibly the most dramatic moment of the whole show. We as the audience don't know if we should trust Grunkle Stan because even to us his intentions weren't made clear. We don't know what his plans are and we don't know if he's using the machine for his own selfish intentions or the good of the world. We can just hope.

It's made even better by the fact that we had an ENTIRE EPISODE dedicated to Stan's inability to say "please" and the competition between him and Mabel that spawned because of it. He said "please" here, showing Mabel exactly how important this was to him, and _that_ is why she trusted him.

What makes this episode so special, is that it actually makes us doubt Stan, even though we should know better. Most Disney shows would never dare to turn one of their lead characters into a potential villain but here we are, contemplating about wether the portal should be closed or not. _THIRTY YEARS AND NOW HE'S BACK_ _THE MYSTERY IN THE MYSTERY SHACK_ Fun fact about this pivotal episode! Before this episode aired there had been several years worth of discussions and theories proposed among the _Gravity Falls_ fanbase about the identity of the author. Some were very far off the mark, but a few correctly deduced that it was Stan's brother. Some of the main points they sighted came from looking deeper at Stan's memories from the season 1 episode "Dreamscaperers" that showed memories that hinted at a past family relative (the swing set with one broken swing next to another working one, the kid with his face obscured by a book in the background of Stan's boxing class memory that had a similar hairstyle). They also looked at the way Stan reacted to the murder of his Wax figure (believing it was like losing his brother again) and how he looked oddly contemplative while holding a pair of glasses he found in the unknown Mystery Shack room in "Carpet Diem." The fan theory that arose from those observations was that Stan had a sibling (likely a brother) who was the author of the journals. Something horrible had also happened between the two that resulted in them being separated and Stan's work to locate and use all three journals was an attempt to fix something he had broken. The problem for Alex Hirsch was that this fan theory was spot on and threatened to ruin the big reveal he had planned for season 2. So, in an effort to throw people off the trail, he enacted what became known as "The McGucket Hoax." Using a different Twitter account, he posted a fake screenshot of a younger-looking McGucket writing in one of the journals, claiming he had acquired it from a leaked episode from season 2. Then, from his main twitter account, he re-tweeted the fake leak sounding outraged that such a breach could happen and that his entire narrative setup for the moment was compromised. It actually worked in throwing most people off, thus preserving the big reveal. Just another amazing layer of creative engagement the creators had with the show's viewers.
@WrestlingGod-f4v9 ай бұрын
which is so freaking genius by the way that is a perfect way to throw them off track because I imagine if that never happened and someone would’ve guessed it already The show would’ve been ruined because we already knew that it had been something like that thank God that wasn’t the case
@Gestrid9 ай бұрын
To add to this, according to an interview with one of the people working on the show, Alex saw the theory gaining traction on Tumblr and immediately called an all-hands meeting to come up with a way to throw people off. He had one is the artists draw the younger McGucket with six fingers (the older one notably has bandages on one of his arms) writing in the journal, and he staged the photo to make it look like someone has just been walking by, saw it, and snapped a photo. He posted it to Reddit and left it there for a little bit before deleting and burying it.

This episode has many callbacks. The swing in the after credits scene actually shows up in the first Bill episode but in that episode the swing is broken and the toys are also broken almost like something was missing and because of that its left damaged. Its meant to represent Stan being broken without his brother. Mabel trusted Stan because she knows its impossible for him to say please and in this moment he said it. She knows he isn't lying because he was able to say the one word he can't say normally. Also this is not the first time you see his brother. In the time travel episode you see his brother look outside in the winter also I think the Stan you see on Bill was the brother. Also you see his brother's glasses when Stan grabs them in the body swapping episode. When his wax figure shows up in the wax figure episode Stan is initially scared because he thought it was his brother at first and he is so happy to have wax Stan around because it reminds him of his brother. When Wax Stan is killed Stan feels the loss of his brother all over again.

"Wait... So why is he saying he's innocent" Oh sweet summer child, that's called "lying" xD Joke aside I get what you mean, when a character says something like: Wait, I'm innocent *this time* 99% of the time they're genuinely innocent from this specific crime even if they're delinquents or criminal otherwise, especially if they're sympathetic figures. GF's writers used our own meta knowledge against us.

We see his brother in a couple of episodes. Mainly in one where they are in Stan's mind S1E19. When we get his flashbacks about learning boxing. Also in the episode where Dipper and Mabel go back in time to get back the pig and etc. At one point they are in the past when the shack wasn't a tourist attraction and we get to see Stan, but look at the glasses he's wearing there. There is also a subtle hint in season 1, the episode about carpet that changes bodies. The whole thing was started when Soos found a room that even Stan didn't know about. If you watch him entering that room, he picks up and quickly hides glasses that were on a stand there, ones that were worn by Stan in the flashback I talked previously.
