Well the thing about quantum gravity is, that it is a theory which is the least established: General relativity was tested and showed to predict many things right. Quantum mechanics does so as well. You can find ways to lead classical observations in almost any field back to a quantum theory, as for example for QED and QCD. But for quantum gravity this step widely debated. There exists working theories but it couldn´t be unified with the other theories so far, whereas the others could.

The pervasive view that wikipedia is a lesser form of evidence is derived from its inherent (relatively) public nature. For this reason information is written, asked for references, but unless someone comes along and flags it, it will remain. However most don't realize how often these articles are curated and peer reviewed. This does not mean it is inherently a GOOD resource either. As with any reference you might seek, you must judge it based upon it's methods. When it comes to science most seek systematic reviews as these represent aggregates of scientific trials. Tl;dr, don't take the simple fact that something is on a website as fact. Ask questions and look for the answers. Be skeptical.

Good observation! And both statements are correct at the same time. While yes, the moon has a stronger pull on earths side closer to it, that also applies to earth itself. So in a very simplified manner: the moon pulls the side thats facing it stronger, then it pulls the "middle" of the planet a little less strong, and the other side less strong still. So essentially, the entire planet is pulled away from the water on the other side. That creates the second buldge. There are videos explaining this FAR better than I do, but i dont remember which one. If you like, i can find it for you because i know i have that particular one downloaded. I think it was a pbs spacetime video but im not entirely sure. But to recap: lets simplify the strength level of gravity into made up units of strength. The water on the moon facing side experiences 3 units of strength, the planet 2 units, and the water on the opposite side 1 unit. The water on the moon facing side is pulled 3 in the direction of the moon, the planet 2 (leaving still 1 unit left for the moon facing bulge) and the water on the other side 1 units, again, leaving 1 unit difference between the earth and that water. I hope this helps visualise it without the aid of images. Im really bad at explaining haha. Let me know if i should find that video!

Then place a dot at the centre of each circle to represent their respective centres-of-gravity. Draw a straight line between the two dots. The centre-of-gravity of the *Earth-plus- Moon* would lie along this line. It might be twenty miles away from the centre-of-gravity of the Earth alone. So the Moon rotates around this *combined* centre-of-gravity (taking about 28 days). Likewise the centre-of-gravity of the Earth alone also rotates around this *combined* centre-of-gravity. Therefore the side of the Earth *furthest* from the Moon is moving at an angular velocity *greater* than the side *nearest* to the Moon. So the side of the Earth *furthest* from the Moon experiences an increased *centrifugal force* (opposing the force due to the Earth's gravity). This accounts for the high tide on the side *furthest* from the Moon (additional to the high tide on the side *nearest* to the Moon).

No one claims that physics and its laws can explain it all. What you describe there is a test of a theory as the headline says itself. Now, either there already is a theory which might explain this phenomenon and now has to be put to the test itself or you have to find a new applying theory or extensioin or the error in this experiment. General relativity is teached as it is because most of the things it predicts just right. It predicts more things right than counterexamples exist. Therefore, chances are higher that a conceptional error was made than putting up or perfoming that experiment.

Heinz Heinz That's the point - so far Einstein's relativity theory was the best theory around and was usually pretty precise. The ESA experiment is not the only one that clear shows that this theory has become obsolete but for some reason established physics try to hold up and defend obsolete theories. That has nothing to do with science. I understand that it must be harsh for any serious scientist to realize that everything he/she has learned is based on false basic assumptions and that it's time to learn everything from scratch again. It took over 300 years before it was common knowledge that the earth isn't flat - and knowing that the structure of power hasn't changed much since that time, I really hope that todays scientists have the courage not to bend over under the pressure of the establishment and help to understand the real nature of our universe. Well, but if you have made experience in science you should also know that you cannot make a theory obsolete just by one experiment. And as i said before, before you can confirm the result of this experiment you have to make sure that all its results are correct. The data which would finally suggest the "higgs boson" was evaluated for over two years and scientist there were konwing what they were watching for.

Heinz Heinz Sure but the Higgs boson got heavily promoted by mainstream-media while the stunning results of ESA's experiment got no attention at all. The effect would have a real, deep impact in our daily life - from transportation to energy and not only in the scientific community. There were other scientists who made similar experiments and discoveries before ESA - so it's not the only and not the first series of experiments. At least it should be mentioned that there are indices that Einstein's theory isn't valid anymore. Meanwhile I've the impression that the fundamental laws of physics are heritage-protected - unquestionable, even if already proven wrong or incomplete at least.
